History of 28 AT

I know you guys were busting on the other 28 AT thread getting hijacked so I thought I would start a new one with some questions I have on the 28 AT. I'm looking for a brief rundown on the history/construction of the boat.

What year did Pat start producing the boat?

Was the boat splashed from another hull or is it an original design?

Have there been any major changes to the boat over the years (i.e. hull bottom, cockpit, cabin, construction materials, etc.) and if so what were the changes and what years did the changes encompass?

Is the cockpit a fiberglass liner or is it plywood with Lon-Seal glued to it?

Is the cabin a fiberglass liner or is it stick built?

What are the performance numbers from the most popular powerplants in the boats (i.e. 502MAG, 500 EFI, 496MAG HO, 525EFI)?

I apologize for all the questions but I've never had the opportunity to view this model AT in person. I've only ever seen a late 90's 32 AT up close.

Thanks.

Not sure exactly what year was first 97/98. I had a 99 and it was a completely (sorta) different than my 06. With that said the newer ones are short 32s and the first ones were a different hull they have more rocker in the bottom and the newer I think 04 are stright outa the 32 molds. The liners are glass. The cockpit is glass with a glued in floor covering.(perilli) (i know the spelling is wrong) I did feel a little less headroom in the cabin of the new one and a couple inches less freeboard although Pat always said it was in my head. The dash is also different on the newer ones, the compass is gone off the port side and there is a small glove box and cooler (not the majic one like on the 33). They are a great boat no matter what year and there really isn't anything else out there to compare them to. Now lets see if anyone else has anymore info, I'm sure there will be lots more.:D I am sure this thread will be hijacked also, ain't it great.

How's the balance with twins? I'm thinking they didn't make many that way? Twins are always a plus in my book as long as it doesn't make the boat too stern heavy.

Shoot a PM to 'boatfreak' aka Mikey here on OSO. His 28 that he sold a few months ago went to Northern Illinois; somewhere on the Chain perhaps?

He should be able to get you in touch with the new owner.

As Cosmic12 stated above...the original 28's were pulled from the Active Fish Mold. The newer (I believe 2004 on) were pulled from the 32 mold. The 28's Topdeck mold was built in 1998. Both are great running boats. I believe Spillmans 28 with twin 350 magnums was the first 28 delivered. (Used to have a deranged "Bam Bam" decal on the deck. I had the pleasure of working there while the topdeck molds were being built....long, tedious process. Nexttime someone complains about the $$$$ of a new boat, invite them over to watch molds/plugs being built!!! The 28's from the Active Fish Mold had more rocker, you had to run the tabs a bit but the sharp entry would crush rough water...the 28's from the 32 molds had a longer straight on the bottom. The first 28's cabin was stickbuilt...later came a cabin liner mold. You can't go wrong with a 28, no matter what year! Nothing else compares in size, cockpit depth, cabin size/height or rough water handling! They're great boats!!!!!

Jupiter, that is cool that you were part of the build process of New Moon; formerly ?Bam-Bam? It is true though, the previous owner(#2) took off the bloody head of Pebbles & Bam-Bam holding the spiked ball & chain stickers. The boat does require some tab at speed; 3-1/2 on the indicators wot and trim up to 5 is about perfect. Also, how many 28's have the notched transom? I can't recall seeing another 28 w/a notch.
And some more pics for the Northern rs!

That bed ext. is great wish I had thought of that.:cool-smiley-011: P.S. I want that boat

I like the colors on your boat..were did you get the grab handles on the bow?

boatfreak 12-06-2007 09:05 PM

I think all of the 28s had a notched transom until the hull change. I know my 01 had a notch.

Previous owner made the bow rails, exhaust deflectors and kel plane; his welding and powder coating is very clean. He made some custom upgrades to this boat. He also added the drive gate to the trailer.

Thanks, Jup. This is the type of information I am looking for.

I was at the Sunsation plant many times during the construction of the bucks for the F-4. The man hours you have to put into that process is just insane. Between the construction of the bucks and the final molds I believe they ended up with @ $1 million invested before they pulled the first hull.

Anyone experiencing any problems with the flooring coming unglued?

Your quite welcome! I'll always be an Active Thunder Fan...been in everything from the 21' to the 37'...the only one I never rode in was the baby Cat. (It was never really put out for production..too bad!)

I want one of those 21s bad------- Pat won't let on where they are except the one that Harry has that he won't sell. Do you know where they went? I tried to get the tooling for the little cat when he was moveing everything from up north and now he tells me he just junked it.

I know they layed up one little Active Cat at the factory a few years ago (it looked great..white/blue) ......there's a bunch of red tape bureaucracy and testing that has to be done on boats less than 21 feet in length. They need to be foam filled and tested by the (Coast Guard???) or some sanction and be able to float while swamped before they can be approved for production.........
My personal boating habits have changed and all the guys I hang with have smaller (18-24 feet) outboard powered boats...Hydrostreams, Checkmates, Talons, Actions, STV's, Allisons, Quartershots, etc. etc. Hydrostream has come back with a vengence...their new Venom hull is winning all the races and looks and rides awesome. Most of the Venoms are running upper 90's low 100's in a 20' boat!! Talk about a white knuckled thrill ride!! Many of the small boats are air entrapment hulls...no one is using a step! (except the old Checkmate Starflites). I bet I could sell the Active Thunder 21 if Pat would produce them!!! There's alot of speed junkies that just can't afford big offshore boats but they're spending some good money on smaller stuff!!

cosmic12 12-08-2007 08:42 AM

He tells me that they are just to expencive to produce (21) The tooling is still around but? I wish he would do something with it.

Next year could be so different with gas prices and inflation and the economy. Don't rule it out. The molds are still around, so its not out of the question. I know that I would want one with a big fat outboard on it. With the evolution of the Mercury Vazer, this type of engine package could also make for some interesting new boats in the coming seasons.

I know the molds were farmed out and someone layed up some bass boats with the hull bottom...not sure where the molds went to?? The only thing really missing was an "Active Thunder" looking top deck!! With a little more freeboard and the Active Thunder look, the boat would be killer!!!
