Key West 2009

It's time to start planning the big event!

Active Thunder in conjunction with the Florida Powerboat Club is ready and planning the November Key West run departing Miami Beach on your choice of days.

If you are even thinking about a few days or even a week of boating 'Florida Keys style' get on board and let us know. Departures and return are November 9th thru the 16th.

The factory team is planning on the November 13th departure date returning Monday the 16th.

Contact Jackie at the Florida Powerboat club thru e-mail or the phone. Her contacts are 954-545-1414 or [email protected]

Of course feel free to call me or e-mail me as well if you want to talk about a place to keep your boats, departure info or anything else about this event!

Surprised you do not own it already. I know a couple people were chasing it but had financing problems.

Guys, I think i'm gonna make this run this year. Been wanting to do it for years. But I don't think I'm gonna haul the 37 all that way, so we'll bring the 23' bow rider. May need some help/guidance for my first ever drive/boating event in Key West.

What's the best hotel to stay at for this event?
What about boat slips?

Yeah.. I really don't want to haul 12,000 lbs of boat to Key West so I can throw anchor and watch a race. If it were a poker run, that would be a different story. But, just for watching the race, I think the bow rider will be sufficient. no?

I was thinking you were going to run the bowrider from Miami to Key West.

If you're towing it all the way down to KW, that's a different story.

I should never post before I have my coffee.

Yeah... we're thinking of trailering it to Key West... but not from Miami... from Cleveland OH.
Never been to the worlds, and always wanted to go. Just looking for some good advice to make the trip the best I ever had.

Honestly I would leave the 23 bowrider at home and fly in(unless your are a road-trip kind of person). If you get down to the sea wall at Truman Annex or Mallory square, you will have as good of, if not better view of the racing.

If you do bring the boat, you can rent slips overnight but they are not cheap. Even keeping it on land wont be cheap as you will hve to keep it at a marina. Also, last year there was a lot of theft. Drives, props, steering rams, trailer hitches/balls, etc.

Try to get a hotel on Front St. You want to be close to Duval St. A friend stayed at The Westin and liked it. I have a timeshare at The Galleon, so I never have to worry about that stuff. Others may know some of the other hotels close to Duval.

BajaIceBreaker 09-14-2009 01:15 PM

We don't want to fly, because we'd also like to explore the florida waters. The race is more an excuse to go to Florida. Trailering isn't that bad for the bow rider, can still haul arse and not too bad on gas.

But theft is a concern... better take my brothers truck. lol

Really, prolly make sure we have lots of theft deterrants. That's probably another reason to keep it in the water at a marina... less teft from under water.

Prolly the only real way to combat theft is insurance.

What's expensive in Key West? $4 /ft.

Gotcha.

99% sure my buddy's $3400 steering rams were stolen off his Skater while it was in the water! I don't think you would have much to worry about with a 23 foot bowrider as long as you took the portable electronics with you. The crooks are more after the expensive props, drives and sterring rams.

I cant remember exactly what my Dad paid for his 24 Progression in water storage, but I think it was something like $70 a day.

At this point I think your biggest issue is going to be finding a room. I bet most rooms are booked up. You may have to stay outside of the Duval st. area, but the island is not that big(2 miles x 4 miles).

whoya 09-14-2009 05:47 PM

Joe give me a call and I will give you the scoop. We went 2 years ago. Rooms are not cheap and this late you will have slim picks.
Great event to go to though.

BajaIceBreaker 09-15-2009 05:55 PM

that sounds cool. i'm sure we'll find someone willing to take my money. lol
