Midwest & specifically Indiana fields were a MAJOR source of Hemp for the US Gov't during the Vietnam War. They used the rope in the jungles.
When the Uncle Sam stopped subsidizing the farmers to grow Hemp, the farmers plowed the fields off into the ditches. Hence the term "Ditch Weed."
