A/T's in Rough water

I just wanted to say that if it was not for my 37 Active Thunder today we would not have felt as safe and would have never tried to cross Lake Erie in its fury. 12' Rollers and mixed slop running at 42 MPH from PIB back to home. I would have never attempted this in any other boat. Awesome job Pat and thank you A/T for a Job well done. P.S. My wife thanks you for one hell of a stable ride.

Where? I wanna see it. We tried doing the Kellys run a few years ago in 6-8. Needless to say our whole group turned back.

Gladhe8er 05-16-2011 09:05 AM

Great pic! I agree...AT's take the rough better than most boats.

SS930 05-16-2011 09:08 AM

Those are some cool looking faces! Now where are those 12 footers??? :D This I have to see!

Way back from PIB yesterday, the Jet Express was taking waves over the top, peaks where at 6' above sea level making 12' swells per noaa. luckily we could run in the troughs from east to west, 27 knots winds from the NE makes for one hell of a mix.

AT Chris and I trailer back up to st. Clair that day. Forecast 4-6 tight chop. We were the only ones out and were able to run WFO. Awesome day! Should've seen the peoples faces wherever we pulled in... priceless:drink:

Tell Chris I said hello. Yeah was funny watching the peoples faces as we pulled out of PIB. Priceless ! Sure they all figured we would turn back in.

i wanna see some real 12 footer's .
12 foot wave's are very big and it's very hard to think that a 37 foot boat can run 40 mph + in them A.T. is a great boat but 12 footer's let see .
i had my 38 sonic out in some nice 8 footer's a few time's and could only run around 45 to 50 mph in the trough's and that was a hand full i could not think about another 4 foot of wave on top of that .
after 6 foot the wave's get rely big ever foot after :)

Is there a link to this video or do we just keep looking at your bud with the dive mask on??? And I'm thinking if you have that bad boy trimmed right he SHOULD NOT BE WET!!!

Wasn't it kinda hot with all those clothes on?

86 and sunny in Pompano today! :evilb

BTW, thank you. Just keep in the back of your mind, great boat or not, if it stops running you have a handful. Be careful and keep that in the back of your mind.

Official NOAA Buoy report is at 11' wave heights at Avon Point, was not fun and when in the troughs was over our heads. My co crew member is over 6' and even he was looking up at them. We ran 3000 rpm at 42 mph from PIB to Bolles in under an hour bow high and it dosnt matter how you set it up you will get soaked in those kinds of conditions. The A/T never once pounded and got some serious air at times, Luckily we where able run East to West with the winds and waves coming from the North East at 27 knots. Trust me not at all fun but this boat ROCKS !

Where's the video of these 11 or 12 footers? I really want to see how the 37 handles those at 40+ mph! :D

that's great to hear , A.T's are great rough water boat's and i guess if your stuck in that kind of water you have no choice but to run . i just no how rough that has to be and would not go out in that even in a 50 foot go-fast boat , unless i had chopper's flying over me with a dive team ready to pluck me from the water :)

laszlo01 05-17-2011 04:41 PM

Was not a pleasure ride for sure, got stuck out at the island and had to make it home, wasnt to bad when we departed but somewhere in the middle it was horrible. The point i was tring to make is it was great to have such a good rough water boat underneath us when the **** hit the fan. Some people just dont want to understand that I guess.

Wow, that is impresive. i have been in 12 footers twice in my life and that is a scary expirence. My 42 Sonic was lucky to do 20 to 25 MPH in that, but I have never rode in an AT so that may be what makes all the difference. Glad you made it back OK.

rssteiny 05-17-2011 08:05 PM

Ive seen lake erie with 8 to 10 big ugly rollers and took my 32 a/t out in about 6' rollers next morning running 40/45 mph and theres a big size and weight difference in a 32 and a 37 so i beleve every word laz says. The non belevers dont have a boat to do that so it is what it is.

it all depend's on how your running the wave's . he was running in the trough's " between the wave's in the valley " if you where to be running straight into the wave's or they where coming from behind you it would be a different story .

Sorry the short clip was shot heading out, couldnt shoot in the heavy rough stuff. And there was no way in hell we would have made it trying to run head into them, you have to know what you are doing in those kind of sea conditions. Just plain nasty

I guess I'm basing a lot of my opinion on the NOAA bouy off Cleveland that never saw a wave over 8' high on Sunday. But hey, that is still big water boating.

Yeah I'm sure your right about that. 37 AT is probably SOOOOO much more boat than a 42 Sonoc. Good point. Thanks.

This was at the S/W Basin between west sister and the marker Bouy Madcow. The noaa wave height bouy at cleveland recorded 11' as well. And I was out there looking up at them so what is the deal ? Seriously ?

Not to far from you down by Windsor on Lake Erie, you should come down for one of our events.

camptappakeg69 05-18-2011 07:48 PM

DAM 12's is big water!! Seen a few days like that on Ontario from the front porch drinking cold ones. Most my 25' has been in would be 5~6' swells with a few bigger holes around Stony Point Lighthouse coming back from the beach....wasnt fun, but wasnt scared! But have had some fun in some 8's with the jetski:eek:

crb76 05-19-2011 07:32 AM

I have run my AT in lagetimate 8 footers. I have hit 70mph in it. You dont want to sustain that speed for long. We cruised at 45. Just ask my dad Chuck Beecher or Jassby after I had to resucue him in the same stuff.

Wave high is the lesser factor. Seperation is the key.

and always make sure..you never run out of fuel.:grinser010:...and remember Smartcraft gauges when on plane show more fuel in the tank than what;s actually there...

To set the record straight on the wave heights that night.. I ran out of fuel about a mile short of the Pompona ramp. I was rescued by the Beecher's in their 37 AT. The wave heights were a solid 6's with an occasional 8' from the time we hit Miami coming back from the KW PR... The water was very confused that evening. All I remember was me being on my deck and trying to toss two 25' lines to Clark, as he was basically directly underneath me..at that time the waves were at least 10'..scary yes, but you had 2 determined guys trying to achieve one basic thing...get out of there alive and save my boat.. and Im blessed to have friends like this...so in conclusion...yes the Thunders ran very well all day long on the trip home, they handled the water with relative ease, and drive like a bigger boat. Have a great weekend Ya'll, Im off to the rigs for a fishing weekend.:drink:Jeff

h2owarrior 07-14-2011 06:35 PM

Interesting thread. Pat, Judy, Diane and I were out in some big water in our AT. Not sure how high the waves were, but I was in the passengers seat looking over at Pat who was driving. I could see the top of the wave coming at us above Pat's head. We actually had a US Coast Guard plane fly down to make sure we were O.K.. The boat ran great, but it was still a very tense experience.
