Default Hey jafo...

Saw you on the General board lending some info on the request for Single-V's and was wondering if you could give me some feedback. I just recently sold a 271 (I guess a 25' really) Formula Fastech with a single 540hp. Lingenfelter 502 in it. All-in-all, was not happy with the boat but that's a very long story. Aside from that, I am looking at doing something in the 28-30' range and had previously looked at the 28 AT, and now am back looking for info again. I do all my boating on Lake Winnipesaukee in NH, and at about 27 miles long, it can get rough on most weekends. I'd like to go with twins vs. a big single for a number of reasons, mostly balance, and "pushing power" if I stick a half-doz. people on it. I am mainly looking for your (or any AT owners) feelings on build quality, rough-water ride etc. One of the things that most appealed to me about the 28' AT is the freeboard, love a high freeboard! And the fact that it is a "real" 28' is a plus; vs. the "...28 with platform and beak etc..." Any help you and your fellow AT owners can offer up would be great.

I have found great info on this board so far, thanks to all. Hope everyone had a safe and happy 4th!

Do The Math,
My wife and I have a 28' AT with a single BB. We just got back from a week long vacation on, and we never felt cramped. We love the boat. Active Thunder made the biggest 28 foot boat you will ever find (I wish they still built them). It handles rough water with ease. I boat in Lake Erie and the water can get snotty here.
If you have any questions you can e-mail me direct or call.

do the math-
Although I don't have a lot of seat time in our 28' AT yet (job and the fact that it is still in Michigan, I CAN tell you the times we have had it out have been on Lake Michigan, and it has performed very well out there. (We did have take it out of Pompano a few times last winter as well)
I'm a small-block fan, and this boat is very well balanced with the twin 350 MagMPI's. It flies very level in all sea conditions. They did not offer up this model with twin BBC's.
We are very happy with the cabin size, although we feel the boat could use a little more in the way of storage areas. Not that big a deal though.
As far as the size of the boat, you won't find a bigger true 28 footer, PERIOD! It has a tremendous amount of freeboard- I'm don't know of any boats this size that can equal it there. Very safe feeling in the cockpit. The build quality is excellent, as one should expect from a custom builder.
They didn't build many- I believe the only other (maybe 2 or 3?)
twins have Scorps (fast!). Call Steve and ask him if there are any out there for sale now or in the near future.
BTW, it won't have any problems at all with your lake, and the power is more than adequate for a boat-load of friends and gear!

There are pics of both Chris' and my boat in this forum- do a search.

Hope you can find one!
Jim

Smile Thanks for the info.

Chris and Jim~

From the sounds of it, has AT decided not to build this model any more? They have it listed on the web site as being still available, but it sounds like you guys have heard otherwise... Have you heard or been told that they are not making the 28 any more? That would be a bummer if that is the case, I was really getting sold on that model. I guess I'll find out more as I take it up with the guys at the factory. It sounds like you both like your boats and have had good luck with them so far. Jim, I think you need to change jobs so you can get more time out there on the water . We don't get the conditions that you guys do out on the Great Lakes, but we can see 3-5's all day long with no trouble. I'll see what I can find for pics on the site, thanks again for the info, I appreciate it!

~Mark.

Default Ohhh, would I...

But, I have an issue with length so that's why I'm looking for something around 28', thanks though! My issue is that trying to find a spot at any bar or rest. on the lake during the weekend is a *****... Plus right now, bigger boat means building a bigger dock in front of my house etc... I know in the scheme of things, it's petty, but that's where I am right now. (However, after seeing Todd & Tracys Pics from the fourth, the 32 is REALLY looking good at this point... ). If things go well with the 28, you never know...

jafo~ Based on another reply you posted to the dlr. in OH, I was under the impression that they were not building the 28 anymore either... sorry 'bout that bro', my bad... I am looking for new, prob. to do a 28 with the 6.2's, maybe spend some extra $$ and do the ITS drives too... I like those puppies! Anyway, I'm hoping for some good news from the AT guys, then a trip down there soon will be the next order of business. What are you seeing for top end on your 28 with the 350 Mags.?

do the math-

As the saying goes,-- money talks and .......
If you make a trip to the factory, expect a lighter check book in your future!
I think you could talk them into building you one, although the cost may be high. The 6.2's with ITS would be a neat package!
I hope there is some renewed interest in this model, as it is one of the best in this length.
We were looking at AT, Pantera, Powerplay, and Cig- (we had enough of the production boats although I would own another Formula). We were very close to buying a Cig Bullet; still love the lines of that boat, but we are very happy with the AT (faster boat than a stock Bullet, newer, and uses a lot less fuel to do it.)
I would prefer our boat to have the 6.2's, or the Scorps ($$$$ouch!). I am either going to Whipple my existing engines, or build up some custom strokers for Whipples. Either way the boat is capable of a lot more power than it has right now, and the weight distribution is just right with SBC's.
The boat will run 70+ right now- I need to get more seat time to find the sweet spot with the trims and tabs.
Best of luck in joining the AT crowd!

Jim

Audacity---

Joe, I went to your website when you said; "Want a killer deal on a killer ride?" and looked all over your website for the "killer deal" (i.e price you're asking). Not sure what you meant exactly, but if the price is there I missed it. I love how you have that boat set up! Thanks, Mark

jafo~ You got it, $$$ talks and from the sounds of it I will be doing a fair amount of "talking" after my conversation with AT last night, but it would be sooo worth it. I agree that the Scorps would be sweet but huge $$$ for a few extra hp., not to mention that of 27 miles of water that I boat on, two stations sell Premium fuel, one of them is 20 miles from my house, and the other is not sure to have it forever, sooooo.... With that in mind the 6.2's seemed like the way to go, they are more or less bullet-proof and 5-year warranty-able (new word there) to boot. The Pantera is about the same money, but just doesn't have the freeboard I'd like. I looked (ever-so-briefly) at the new 292 Formula at the boat show in Feb., but I'm just having trouble going back to them (call it pride or just the stubborn-Italian in me...) Not to mention they are about 30% more $$ than the AT. Yeah, ya get a windshield (but I have sun glasses for that) and a little glitzier cabin, but with a house on the lake the cabin is not a big deal to me. And the AT is just a bad-ass ride, hands down! Of course if, (er, when) I do this I'm gonna have to drag it around to a poker run or two, so maybe then the cabin will get some use. In any event, I'm looking forward to pursuing this and hopefully joining the few, the proud, the AT crowd! Thanks...
