New motor for the Tantrum

Its finally done. Still needs paint. We dynoed it yesterday and made 693hp at 5500 rpm through 5700 rpm, 733 tq at 4500 rpm.

Its a 555ci gen. 4, bowtie tall deck roller motor. Merlin 320 iron heads w/ little work, 1050 dominator, 9.6-1 comp. ratio, 26* timing on 93 pump gas.

Maybe I will sqeeze in a sea trial befor it gets too cold...

I thought this was cool too, turn up your volume:evilb:

No blower? Nice numbers!

Unlimited jd 11-02-2012 06:57 PM

Awesome! If I may ask why so little timing? Did you check egts? Don't want to see any valves tulip.

My Addiction 11-02-2012 07:17 PM

No blower, all motor. We tried 29* but there was no increase, that is the pull in the video. Not sure on the egt, but the a/f was good. I will check my sheets for egt.

Sweet. Let us know what prop/speed #s you get if you have a chance to run it

Very nice Nick.
I cant wait to see how you mount those mufflers..

Unlimited jd 11-03-2012 03:17 PM

My guess is 83-84 since it has been 82 with that power before lol

R Addiction 11-03-2012 09:09 PM

Nice numbers Nick.

c'mon I was doin 77 with around 500 hp. The 600 Tantrums are doing 85. Did Rob ever have his motor dynoed?

Nick, what do you think mine will do with 530HP (crankshaft)?
Does your Ext. box make that much of a difference?

I would hazard a guess thats without accesories or marine exhaust?

He did, but the 572 made a lot of torque and peak hp wasn't real high. Anything over 5300 rpm could guarantee the drive was broken. I believe he had a 32p bravo 1 labbed and was on the limiter with ease. It should definitely be faster than what I was saying just busting chops. Glad to see some good power back in that hull!

The x dimension in his boat is a lot higher than most of the others. If you have a standard build boat I believe you're drive would end up to deep and slow the boat down. Iirc his even had a 1.5" spacer in the drive even though the box allows for higher drive height.

hopefully high 70's maybe 80, not sure. The box, I have been told is good for 1-2 mph but makes it handle way differently.

I have the KE cast aluminum long headers, so I dont think I am going to loose much there and with all that torque....accesories. I know the number will be different once installed and hooked up and spinning a prop, but at least I wont be playing the guessing game when trying to prop it to the right rpm. That was my main reason for dyno testing.

Timing. we started out at 22* and autolite 23 plug and only made 650. then went to a colder NGK plug and 26* then made the 693. Then 29* didn't show any improvement as stated before.

Just curious.... do you have any fuel flow numbers on your dyno sheet?

The extension box on my old 25 made no difference i took it off, 530 hp should put you around 76-77 on gps.

Maybe there is only one, "Pack n heat". Maybe its faster. I just think thats what I remember the previous owner saying.

So what is the top speed of the 600SC Tantrum??

state1310 12-06-2012 06:25 PM

what prop would be recommended for 530hp to hit 76-77 ?

I ran a slightly worked solid hub 28 B1 with my old motor that was around 500hp or a little more and ran 76-77 mph gps at 5300rpm. And its for sale:santa:

What boat and power do you have?

I thought I saw two of them with 600HP on powerboatlistings.com not too long ago, one had a tall wind deflector I think. Not sure if they both were mercury 600SC's tho

very funny !!! and my wife already said she wont be on a boat going 70 , its ok though she hardly ever goes anyway . my old nova spyder barely hit 60 and she didnt like that . it was so heavy it would barely jump a wave , just flatten it out .
