Savage speeds?

What are realistic top speeds for a savage with a full load, 4 people, cooler, half to 3/4 tank of fuel?

With 500hp, 600hp, 700hp, 800hp?

How much power has someone put in a savage?

Drock78 01-18-2013 12:56 PM

A couple of guys on here are running about 800hp..85-90mph
My 500efi should run 70 any day.

Gladhe8er 01-18-2013 01:21 PM

525 EFI - labbed prop, 1 person, 1/4 tank, perfect conditions - 72.9 MPH GPS

3-4 people, 3/4 tank -67.5-69 MPH usually.

My stock twins are about the same.

Maybe OCD will chime in. I believe these are his speeds:
500EFI with procharger(750ish HP): mid 80's
500EFI: 67 MPH

He does have an IMCO drive which probably robs 1-2 MPH.

who is OCD:party-smiley-004:

Do you have a particular hull in mind already? 2004 and later will be a few ticks faster as the hull was tweaked a bit.

I do not, and I was unaware that there were differences, good to know though. The newer ones don't have a step, correct? Is it a pad or a notch that makes them a little quicker? I'm still trying to decide if I want a stand up or a sit down boat. If I decide on stand up I think AT wins hands down, I just don't know how much "wave crushing" ability I really need for inland lakes though i'm sure the passengers would appreciate it.

The other hull that i'm interested in is a 29' kryptonite, completely different beast.

No notch or pad or anything. The earlier ones has more of a rocker in the center of the hull (lengthwise) due to HP of the engine packages of the day. With props, drives, and more modern technology, the straight bottom got a little straighter after 2004.

I'm my humble opinion, nothing beats having twins. Besides the added security on big water, being able to control the bow while docking in rapid current (i.e. river, jetty) or in a crosswind has many benefits. Though, it can be even more entertaining to watch someone docking with twins without skills (or embarrassing). I'll take the added maintenance any day. :party-smiley-004:

mobuzz 01-19-2013 04:45 PM

Yeah, I'll have to agree with fellow "28 Twins" sub-cultmember abmotorman.....although our opinion may not carry much weight, as it's quite an exclusive club. :stooges:

Im running a 23 5blade hydromotive. I got a shorty with it. I think I can spin a 24 5 blade with the shorty for a couple more MPH

Same thing as with the higher HP singles and why the bottom changed. You don't need twins in that boat, but IF you are solo boater (no other boats around, maybe weekdays) or you go offshore, it's great to have twins.

Ours is a 99 with a large notch in transom and very high shaft height. Running 800+ HP turning a stock 5 blade Max 28P. Runs any time 83 gps with 4-6 people and gear. Have seen 87.7
Trying a nose cone cut down lower this year. Hope to see 90

Did your imco shortie pick you up and if so how much.

Drock78 01-30-2013 09:31 AM

Actually, the early 28's came from the 31' Active Fish mold with a damned down to 28'. The boat bottom had more rocker, different strakes, and a very sharp deadrise at the bow. The later 28's came from the damned off Active Thunder 32 which was and still is a great running straight V hull. The top decks had to be adjusted to fit the newer style hulls that were based on the 32' bottom. Both were great running boats but the later boats handled better..

Crossett 02-14-2013 12:42 PM

Someone needs to build a 28 with a pair of Ilmor MV8 570's. Any clues on what that would run, price and speed wise? Maybe refitting an older 28 wouldn't be that bad....

*edit*
I guess the Ilmors are iron blocks. These guys are all aluminum...
