Shorty drive on 27 Victory

Has anyone put a 2" shorty on a 27 Victory. If so, how does it perform. I have one with a 540 and I am not where I want to be as far as speed goes. I haven't measured yet, but it looks like the drive is awful deep in the water. Thanks

I am curious also if anyone has experience. I have 680hp and started out with a 28p bravo prop and it was too much. I went to 26p and still too much and will end up around 24p per bblades. The drive seems pretty deep in the water.

I would think it will respond very well to a shortie drive. Mine has twins, I added boxes and raised the drives 2.5 (wish I would have went more) and the boat handles excellent and I picked up a bit of speed. Hard to tell the exact amount but is was still 5+ if I had to guess.

The boat handled great in the rough before (lake MI), now it handles like a much larger boat.

Here's my info from the Drives forum. Let me know if you guys have any other questions

Advantage27,
When my 27 had 620 hp, I was running a -2 lower with labbed 25 and 26 props running 72-74 just for reference. Raising the drive up will usually pick up a couple hundred rpm since the prop isn't loaded as hard, allowing you to run a little bit bigger prop. The hydromotive Q-IV-X is also a really good prop on this boat.

thanks ToMorrow44,
Thats good info to know. Before my new engine I had a 23p hydro QIV-X and it did well.

did you get the shorty and did it help you and how ?

snapmorgan 03-01-2012 11:24 PM

Yes, i bought a -2 Imco. As soon as the weather gets nice, i will try it out and see what heppens.

TROR 04-03-2012 01:16 AM

Did you get that boat out yet snapmorgan? Curious if the -2 helped & if you were able to p/u some rpms for a bigger prop.

snapmorgan 04-03-2012 07:48 AM

I will be dunking mine later this week. Will post results

snapmorgan 04-08-2012 09:29 PM

Did some testing this weekend. the -2" Imco picked up a solid 4mph. Tried a labbed 24 B1, a 24 Hydromotive and a stock 24B1. All 3 props ran within .5mph top end, however the stock B1 was 4mph faster at 4000rpm cruise. I can blow the prop out at will taking off, but the overall performance is pretty good with the shorty. I experienced no ill handling, but was only running 66 and some change.

I picked up about 400 rpm, but not enough to have to prop up.

ToMorrow44 04-09-2012 12:31 AM

Good to hear you had some nice results. I would think with 575hp you should be running a tad faster though. What are your slip numbers on the top end? What rpm are you spinning and what's the rev limiter set at?

Haven't put the numbers into a slip calculator yet. Running 5500 rpm with the B1 and the Hydromotive, 5800 rpm with the labbed 24B1. Engine just off dyno, made 567hp. Rev limit set at 6300. Mine is the bowrider version. It is a little heavier and more bow heavy. Plus it is full of stuff. I need to take an inventory and remove about half of the crap in it that we don't ever use. Engine makes max torque at 4000 and max hp at 5200. I have a 25 3blade that I am going to try. Might be able to pull a 5 blade 23 or 24. have you tried anything like that?

American Thunder 04-09-2012 06:38 PM

Thats about 20% slip for the stock 24 and the hydro, 25% slip for the 24 lab. A little high, but not uncommon for the 27s. I forgot you have an open bow, that would account for ~5mph slower. I have tried the Hydro P-5X and Maximus with good results, gets up on plane extremely well with awesome midrange, I just had it overpropped at the time so it was only spinning 5300-5400. Still testing!

I have run my boat with 620hp with both a standard and -2 shorty and now 800hp with standard and -2, each time the -2 was several mph faster and handled better. Also, where are you getting your speed numbers? I maxed out at 73-74 with 620, now running 85-86 with 800hp...there must be something off on your boat...

it must have one flat curve to have max rpm hp of 5200 and a rev limiter set at 6200 . i dont think id want mine set there acording to youre info . id prop for max hp

Toms rig hauls for sure, I hope to bum a ride in it in the next week.

When you say you made 567 on the dyno what exhaust and accessories were you running on that dyno?

Uncle Dave

snapmorgan 04-10-2012 11:16 PM

turning all accessories and raw water pump. Had a set of Dynatech headers with EGT sensors installed. I am running Imco power flow's in the boat.

snapmorgan 04-10-2012 11:25 PM

There is a 25 Hydromotive in the swap shop right now, what do you think? On the 24's the Hydromotive wanted to blow out pretty bad taking off. The Bravo 1 had much better bite, but i could blow it loose if I wanted.

powerflows or powerflow pluses?

Thanks

Regular old power flow's that I have extended the inner and outer pipes all the way to the tips.
