Tired of crap-aches!!
I thought that title might get some attention! Here's the deal, I've wanted an Apache since I saw my first offshore race back in the early 90's. No contest...the coolest boat ever built. Sadly, I had just purchased an 89 Fountain ICBM at the time, whatever....
OK, now it's like 17 years later, and I still have the same Fountain, which I think must be some kind of record. But finally I have the go-ahead from the wife and the banker to get the one boat I should have had long ago! After my preliminary research, my choices seem to be; race boat or crap-ache. The 3 or 6 manbolster set up is way cool, but since my kids combined ages is less than 9, that won't fly. Plus I pack more than 200 pounds, so forget those fancy thin-guy bolsters. So what's left.....not much. The rest of the Apaches seem like they drove through a war......on land.....without their trailers. I recently flew 4 hours to check out a potential buy. What I saw was painful. I actually felt bad for the boat. There was nothing positive for me to discuss. I checked out a couple others locally, with the same results. Now...I am sad. OK, I know lots of you have immaculate boats, but you're not selling them. I don't blame you, I wouldn't either. But, somewhere out there is the boat for me, I just need someone to point it out. WHO HAS AN APACHE THAT NEED A GOOD HOME?!? P.S. Anyone need a perfect looking old Fountain? |
The boat at Shogren seems to be pretty nice and just had a big price drop. Low Profile is a nice boat as is Kageman which might still be for sale. If you want to step up a bit, Lynch Mob is an absolute steal- you couldn't assemble a 41 in that fashion for twice what he's asking.
I've seen one semi-rough 41 on the market this year. The rest have been ranging from nice to flawless. |

That's the Shogren boat. Was $119K, dropped earlier this week to $99K.
I don't know that you could buy a '90 Topgun with 800's on 3's for a hundred grand. |
Your kidding right? I mean what is your price range? There are a few nice ones out there right now. Also what size you looking for?

I checked out the boat at Shogren. Real nice hull and motors, but kinda goes downhill from there. I saw a lot of things in that boat that made me concerned. I'm no Apache expert, though, so I make no assumptions, but it did have more cracks than a retired plumbers convention.
Lynch Mob is awesome!! Hopefully it comes with a divorce attorney, because I'll be needing one if I buy that boat. I need an interior and a rear bench. Sad, but true. Haven't seen the other two boats, though. Any pictures for reference? |
All things considered, I suppose I'd prefer a 41, although 45's and 47's are OK too.
My banker suggests I try to stay under $150, but for thr right boat, we can beat a few more pennies out of him. |
As Mr. Montana stated, there are options out there you just have to be patient and on top of the market. The "Chief" just sold and to me that was one of the best bargains around plus it was a pleasure version 41' (I was kicking myself that I couldn't get it).
Don't be scared by asking prices they usually come down quickly and with your budget there isn't any reason why you shouldn't be able to find a kick a** wave crusher. If you are up to a challenge many of the Crap Ache's could be overhauled and made your own as well. Good luck shopping and when you find your boat you will agree that it was worth the wait!! |
There's only a couple barriers to the 45. The first is pulling it. It's not going anywhere with a pickup truck- at least not sanely. Second is it's not going to be real easy to trailer it to the launch ramp. I'd have to have it in a rack. In my area, there aren't 45' racks. If you can get past those two things, it's a no-brainer. If you need a cabin, then it's not the boat for you. I've been there. :(
I'm surprised to hear that about the boat at Shogren. The only places I've seen pleasure Apache's crack is the divider between the cabin and the forward v-berth. The dashes will get spidering around the corners where the gauge pods are but that's cosmetic. Is it cracked worse than that? You may want to PM board member Wes Smith. His boat Kageman is a beauty. Big motors and S/S #6's. It was for sale, then disappeared. I hadn't heard that it changed hands- maybe he's waiting out the market. Low Profile is in the classifieds. |
If only I had your problems. Good luck with the search.
