Nick the guy that posted above you owns it now. He is also from PA. His wife saw the title from when you owned the boat and she is from your area.

Sorry M that this thread got away from your boat. I know a few Apache owners looking to give you advice. Like I told you on the phone if you go to Perry you will be the second Apache on that lake. They will make a big deal about it. Smithville I am sure you will be the first. Not sure if anyone at Smithville lake even knows what a Apache is.

I have never seen it around. Maybe ill see them and get a ride sometime. Any idea where they run it.

No big deal about getting off the intent of this thread. Love seeing all the Apache owners out there chiming in. The powerboating community is great, and I am looking forward to getting to know more Apache owners. I will be at the Ozarks this weekend, and hopefully I’ll be driving my Apache down or up the river….

How long did you own the boat and who did you sell it to?

Allicat38 09-18-2021 10:23 PM

I believe i bought it in sept of 2002 and sold it in 2004. It was a great boat but i kind of went into more offshore fishing and bought a 38 ocean. I bought the apache for 48k and sold it for i believe 38k to a fire fighter in i believe ohio. I would have kept it longer if i didnt go a different direction in my boating life. It had stock 454 magnumns. It had stainless marine exhaust on it if i recall.. I ran it in the stock form and it was a 67-68 mph GPS speeds. The boat was very nice when i bought it with a very glossy clean hull and top sides. I kept it under a canopy and fully covered with sides to the cover that the previous owner had. i did change out the gauges to gaffrig when i had it. I did rebuild one drive when i found a metal chunk come out when i changed the fluids. had to replace a upper gear set. I did not beat the baot as i am easy on things and do regular maintenance. I have to dig up the pictures of it , i have them somewhere. Orignally i did not have the circle apache logo on it.

Got to go for a ride this weekend before going back to the marina.. minor issues, but getting some break in time on her. The boat porpoises a lot at lower speeds and it takes a lot of tab to calm it down. Running 25p mirage props on it. Is the bounce normal at lower speeds? The most I have had the engines to is 3300rpms. Speedo is not accurate so I couldn’t tell you how fast.

I never had that issue with mine. The 28s do not like flat water. Call Nick he has become a expert on the 28's

Nick added the circle apache logo. Did you use it for poker runs? The stainless marine exhaust was still with the boat when I sold it to Nick.

Best thing I added to mine was the race fairing... besides the 700's:rolleyes:
Moving the Shifters was big plus also -- PIA when in a tight dock and all 4 sticks are cramped in the corner....

KCHOTBOAT 09-25-2021 08:04 PM

Boat looks very clean. Hard to believe it looks that good after not seeing it in 15 plus years.

Rufus81 09-25-2021 08:43 PM

That thing does look great. I just got mine home. I took mine by a local place at the ozarks today on the way home. Going to have them do a once over. Lakeshore Marine, and I think they worked on Nicks boat from what I understand.

Correct Joel at Lake Shores did all the work on Nick's boat when I owned it. Great guys and honest. Joel likes the old school boats. Make sure you get him a Apache shirt.

How do you think a 28 Apache would ride compared to a 28 Pantera?

Never been on a 28 Pantera. All I know is at LOTO the 28 Apache can hang with boats 10 feet longer.

I did have that porpoise issue when I first got it and ran it and was getting used to it. You'll get better with some drive time, but there was some porpoise there for me. My boat had aluminum heads when I first bought it. When I repowered I went back to all cast iron 502/415 crate engine and I swear the extra weight took the porpoise away, so much so you didn't need any tabs ever. You could also have it trimmed up a bit high, mine did not require a lot of trim. They were balanced well stock.

I had only test drove a 28 pantera and it wasn't rough. Have read the apache kind of crushes the water vs the pantera which rides on top more, but the apache is a much nicer boat than a pantera. I shoped for a pantera as well. The pantera has higher freeboard, carpeted cabin, boxy dash, and a hook in the hull that gives it a solid porpoise at least with twin engines and can only be fixed with tabs. The quality is night and day difference. The 28 apache is a strange hull the way the stern of the boat is, its just as big as a 36 or 41 Apache sitting in the water there isn't much difference side by side until you get to the cockpit. The engine bay can fit huge power without having to modify the hatch. Before I put on some weight I could actually sit down in front of the motors - it's the same depth and width as the bigger boats. If you look at the two boats side by side you'll see the apache cockpit sits back a little farther. The fairing on the apache is usefull in the cabin and gives it a lot more headroom space than the pantera and the gelcoat makes it comfortable and cool. The cabin is super comfortable, you never feel cramped.

Not sure if it's the owners or what, but the 28 apache's seem to eat motors same as their older brethren. The true 24 degree deadrise to the transom and extra weight probably don't help.

yeah they don’t like flat water without some tabs. These hulls like neutral trim or dragging a little tab. My neutral is set up at 3 and the most I’ll do on drives is 4ish and same for tabs. If you drag tabs wide open it has less tendency to chine walk. Full hydro was a big help and every time I upped the power it got more stable at top speeds.

GSE Nick 09-29-2021 10:03 AM

The 28 Apache will out do every boat the same size and under and will hang with the best of the big boys when the **** gets snotty. One of the best well rounded mid sized boats IMO.

Is there a good article telling the complete Apache story, who built what and when, what molds, designers, etc? Its a little complicated!

There is a dvd set out there some where that has the early history. till 1995 ish. Something like big time media. It's the guy that did the announcing for the off shore super series in the 90's

At 35 ish it does get a bounce, a little throttle or a little tab and it's gone , it is more evedent with light fuel level. . over 55 no porpoise . extremely predictable , consistent handling . Carves turns . And it is a easy boat to tow, store , load. And they hold there value .

I had a twin 28 Pantera and it would handle the rough water like a boat 10 feet longer. Never rode in an Apache but always had them as one of my favorites. Was at the races in O.C.Maryland many years ago and the ocean was really rough. It chased everyone in except myself in the Pantera and a guy with an Apache. We had a good laugh watching them all run in the bay. I think Apache and Pantera are right up there with the best rough water boats around. I would like to see yours for I too run in the upper bay. Maybe see you out there this summer

Glad to see this thread is still rockin! I saw that Nick has his 28 for sale and there is another really nice looking one for sale on Boat Trader. Best of luck to both on the sale, both are really great looking boats. I can't wait to get some stick time on mine this summer. It is in great hands at the moment. Lake Shores is making sure she will be sea worthy by the time I am ready to go to the lake. Was wondering though. I have stock 25P bravo's on there. I am thinking of ditching those and going with labbed 25P Mirage Plus props. I have heard conflicting information on if they need to be spun in or out though. Thoughts?

With 502 MPI's I ran 26 Bravo 4 blade as my favorite. Responsive and a little more snap in the mid range acceleration, but you could find the rev limiter if heavy on the trim.. I had run 28 Bravo 4 blade also , and would rpm around 4800-4900, never get to rev limit. However in big water (Lake Erie on a windy day ) trying to stay on plan at low speed you would cavitate, lose plane and have to slow down to a couple mph to get back on plane. Got my highest mph with the 28 Bravo -75mph gps every once in a blue moon ,74 mph three times every blue moon, 73 mph all the time. Had 25 Mirage plus at one time , good with a load of people, and in ugly water, but not the top mph.

28 in Michigan (Paleface) has been sold to a guy down by Cincinatti, said he will be on Lake Cumberland mostly .
