41 Apache in Grand Haven MI
3 Attachment(s)
Anyone know this boat or its history? It is for sale by a guy named Tom Gentry.
The boat is supposed to have original gel coat and paint, and C&G 572'2 naturally aspirated (one has 60 hours, other has 120 hours) and rebuilt #3's with 40 hours. The name is "subtle approach" |
Re: 41 Apache in Grand Haven MI
thanks kageman for posting this for me. i took your advise & signed up to OSO. i hope somebody out there has some history on this 41.
i went to see the boat 2 days ago. i think he said there have been 4-5 owners, he having owned it 2 times. i know that it has been in connecticut at some point in its life. i can barely make out a port of somwhere in CT on the transom from a prior painting. also i can read "painted by benny" on the side towards the back. everything looks to be original as the owner said it was. original gel & paint work, interior, engines & drives[all rebuilt], & a new trailer. we did not go in the water or start the engines, because we were all on a short time schedule. also the fairing is off & he is making a new one that is more laid back. so here are my questions: 1. anything on an apache that is a problem area? 2. how do i ck the fuel tanks to see if they are leaking or have been repaired/replaced? the fuel tanks are under the floor i assume, none in the engine comparment. this seems to be an area of concern from what i have read on OSO. 3. how do i tell if the engines are really "C&G"? not some backyard rebuild shop. he suggested i call "Randy" at Cobra & he will verify everything. 4. what do i listen for or feel on the 3a drives? they are the large prop shafts. if we go forward & reverse it's OK? 5. any "apache" things that should be here like, the plaque in front of the passenger on the dash that says "national & world champions" with the indian head in the center. there's also one as you walk into the cabin on the left next to the radio of the indian head. anymore? any suggestions or thoughts will be greatly appreciated by us. i really don't want to make a huge mistake here. boat looks real good, but looks sometimes are deceiving. thanks for all your help. steve |

Re: 41 Apache in Grand Haven MI
All 41 pleasure boats have to have there tanks replaced, plane on 5 to 10 grand.3 A's are a great drive make sure they have not been switched for 3. With your hand on the prop spin it back and forth if it fells smooth you maybe okay if you feel any any problems you will have to have a rebuild and maybe a new gear set. $$$$

What is the easiest way to tell a "3" from a "3a"?
Thanks, Bryan |

Re: 41 Apache in Grand Haven MI
3A's have the same prop shaft size as a #6 which good size.
|
Re: 41 Apache in Grand Haven MI
If they weren't side by side, how could the unfamilliar tell?
|
Re: 41 Apache in Grand Haven MI
I just measured my #3 propshaft diameter. It is 1.25 with 19 splines. The measurement taken is the outside diameter of the propshaft at the splines right after the threads.

Re: 41 Apache in Grand Haven MI
I think I called about this boat when it was in NJ last summer. Once motor was seized and the other hadn't been started for a while. Not sure if it is the same boat but I spoke to DanL's brother.

Re: 41 Apache in Grand Haven MI
As far as the fuel tanks go, only the bow tank needs to be looked at on the pleasure version. On the 3a's, I wouldn't put more than 800 hp on them on a boat that heavy, it's just too much load for the drive to handle. You can put bigger power in the boat and go faster, but why risk the durability and longevity of the drivetrain, someone is ALWAYS going to be faster.

a 41 apache runs good 850hp an #6 drives.

Re: 41 Apache in Grand Haven MI
This boat was owned by a board member who now owns a 28 saber. Post this question in the general forum and he may see it. NK

Hey Steve that isn't true the #6 is slightly bigger than the 3A and 5 you have to run the prop bushings accordingly. The 6 bushing will fit on the 3a but the prop will walk back and forth causing an ill handling boat. |
