Hey guys. The boat came home back in the beginning of August. We have not had a lot of time to use it, but at least it is here. We did have a tranny problem, but we have everything back together now. Evidently, the tranny failed due to a manufacturing flaw when the tranny itself was being built. For this reason, Huber took care of it with no questions. I have to tell you guys that Tres also stepped up to the plate when the problem happened. He not only got us on the fast track at Huber, but he even offered to take care of the repairs if Huber would not cover them.

Anyhow, we put the tranny back in the boat a few weeks ago, but we have not had a chance to go and run it yet. The hotel closes for the season in 2 weeks, so I am gonna get some more time in it this year even if I have to wear a parka to do it! We are also planning to head south a few times over the winter, so the boat will no doubt be going with us!

Here are a few recent pics.

that boat is nice but it needs three motors. that is a lot strane on two motor an drives. its to much boat for two motors.

Hot Duck, what kind of speed did you get with those motors? That is a *****en boat! :drink:

Re: were is hot ducks boat

byrdman: Thank you for the compliment. I really do appreciate it.

p.apache: When re-rigging the boat, we actually considered going back to a triple engine setup, but I can honestly say that I am glad that we didn't. The goal for this boat was to make a nice comfortable "cruiser" to run some poker runs and to have some fun in the waters around here. These two engines provide plenty of power for the boat and don't struggle at all. The boat comes up on plane easily, cruises in the low 70's and will still run near 90mph on the top end. It is exactly what we wanted and the good part is that we accomplished this with only two engines drinking fuel and with only two engines, trannies and drives to maintain. I struggled with the decision at first, but I can't tell you how happy I am that we stuck with the twin engine setup.

baja27: We have only done two speed runs to find the top end because we are still in the process of breaking in the new engines and drivetrain. The first speed run was done in Florida with Tres. He got 87 out of the boat during the first test run on Lake Okeechobee. That was before we did all of the bottom work and dry-sumped the drives. Other than that run, we did do a short top end sprint for Ron Polli when he came here to Ocean City. We got 88 and change out of it with 6 people on board and a full load (400 gallons) of fuel. The ocean was nearly flat that day, so I really don't know what it will do in "perfect" conditions. I also have not run it to the top end with a light load of fuel yet, but I am fairly confident that it will break 90 with a light load and "perfect" conditions.

CigaretteFirefox: Thank you. I don't know what it is, but I really like the classic offshore lines. Some people like the new stream-lined designs, but I prefer the sharp lines of Apache, Cigarette, Pantera, etc.

Re: were is hot ducks boat

R Addiction: Thank you. The boat is as low in the trailer as it can be to reduce the overall height. The height doesn't really matter now, but when the trailer was built we were planning on pulling it with an F-450 pickup....until we found out what it weighed! As for the crew...any time you are heading to OC just let me know. I am always looking for a reason to go for a ride. The sad part is that I almost have to schedule it to get one in during the summer. Maybe next summer will be a little better.

1waterboy1: Believe me, I missed being there! Key West is definitely out this year because I have a commitment here in OC right in the middle of that week. As for other Florida trips, we are heading to Tampa/St. Pete for New Years, then we will be in the Naples area in March for a wedding. The boat will certainly be making these trips with us! Other than that, we want to get in a poker run or two with the FPC before the summer gets into full swing. Of course, we still have a few good weeks to run here at home. The good part about running here this time of year is that you have the ocean and the inland waters all to yourself! :D

donz jr: Thanks again. That is a huge compliment considering some of the hardware that was in that shop over the last year! I was really hoping to get the boat back there this winter to paint it and do all of the cosmetic work, but it looks like that will have to wait until next winter because of the Peterbilt. The purchase of the Pete was not planned and put a huge hit on the budget for this year, but we had to find a larger truck to keep things legal and safe. Now if Tres wants to work in a paint job and some vinyl/upholstery work at cost...... :D :D :D

Right now, the first trip to Florida will be over New Years, but we may be able to sneak down for a few days between now and then. It would be great to run with you guys, Lucky Strike and anybody else in that area from OSO. Besides, we'll need somebody to show us around down there! :p

Jamie B.: I can tell you that you can't stop anywhere without drawing a crowd. It definitely turns heads, but the best part is that it is comfortable and safe going down the highway. Just set the cruise control and then sit back and relax. I took the boat up to Grasonville, MD and back this past Wednesday (about 2 hours each way) and that short trip went by in a blink. This truck makes such a difference. It's great! Tomorrow and Sunday we will be out in the boat here in OC. I'll see if I can snap and post a few new pics.

What a beautiful w/e up here in north east (NJ). Sunday was just a perfect day. Hope you got a chance to snap a few pics HD! ((you had sent me some info on the full covers you had made for your 'old' canopied Gladiator, Thx! :) )).

BTW IMO That is one of ,,, if not the,,, nicest example of an Apache Powerboat I've seen. Hope you're not going to go and throw a bunch of (too much) color at it. I love the 'color' now! Other than the hints of yellow lol, Hint: save that paint $$$$$$$$ for gas! hehe

Re: were is hot ducks boat

njgr8ful : As for how it looks, the boat is what I call a good 5 footer. From 5 feet away it looks great, but up close you can see that it needs attention. There are still some chips and dings on the exterior that need to be fixed and all of the painted and powdercoated hardware needs to be refinished because nothing matches and pretty much everything is either faded, scratched up or chipped. Right now the boat has so many colors from things being added or changed over the years that it is ridiculous. Inside and out, some things are teal, some things are green, other things are red or yellow and some things are light or dark blue! It's crazy. Not only will some paint and powdercoat work freshen everything up, but it will also make everything work together towards one paint and color scheme.

On the exterior, we considered putting the Kid Apache paint job back on it, but right now we are leaning towards going with just a simple red stripe or a simple design in red against the bright white background, leaving a lot of the white showing. Maybe we'll incorporate another color as well. We'll see. That is where the painter will come in, to work the design on the computer until we get it exactly right.

For the interior, we want to change all of the red vinyl to white. Maybe use some red piping or some subtle red accents. If there is another color on the exterior, we will use that somewhere on the interior as well. Other than that, the rest of the color will come from the gages, handles, seat bases and all of the other hardware. Like the exterior, we don't want anything wild, just something simple and really clean looking.

As for the cover you mentioned, that same shop is working on one of those full covers for the Apache right now. They have been working on the patterns and they actually ordered the material for it today. This full cover is going to be red. We have had two in purple, one in bright blue and one in black, so why not do one in red? Besides, this will just help to make sure that it grabs attention going down the road. :D

trader1: I was there to have Offshore Performance swap out the other tranny for us. It was still working, but we, along with the folks at Huber, were afraid that it might have the same manufacturing flaw inside that caused problems in the other tranny. The serial numbers on the two trannies were only 1 digit apart, so we figured that they were probably built at the same time. Better safe than sorry. We are gonna send the tranny that just came out back to Huber to have it checked out to be sure that it is OK.

This is the first time that I have used Offshore Performance in years and I have to say that I was impressed with the guy that did this swap for us. (I don't know if he would want his name posted or not, so I will leave it out for now.) I can't personally vouch for any of the other mechanics there, but I was with this guy for most of the day and he really has his stuff together! Oh yea, this is not to mention that I called them at 4:30 the day before and they squeezed me in the next morning and took care of it while I waited. We swapped the first one out in the yard at home a few weeks ago, but it is much easier when you have some kind of overhead lifting device! Besides, after helping with the first one, all of my boating friends were conveniently busy every time that I wanted to do this one! :D Thank you Offshore Performance.

Hey Bob! As you well know, there are always going to be kinks to work out with any new boat or new project boat. You almost have to expect these things in the beginning, and we did. Once this boat is finished though, it is all going to be worth it. We have actually had it pretty easy so far because this is the first real kink that we have run into. Cross your fingers! :D

As for Key West, you don't know how badly I want to be there this year to see the races and to sit down and catch up with you guys, but it's just not going to work out. That's the story of my life lately! I guess that there's always next year.

60' (maybe even 65' :D :D) of glass being pulled down the highway, by a pimped-out SEMI , probably wouldn't even get a second look .... but now .... add that custom cover ... and you might get a few necks snappin around! :p :p :D

OK. We winterized the boat a week ago and it's a relatively nice day today, so what do we do now? Break it out and run it, of course! :D We put on a few layers of clothing and ran all day today. We went in the water around 10am and pulled out just before dark. It was great! With the exception of a few people fishing in the inlet, we had the ocean and most of the inland waters all to ourselves! The sun never broke through the clouds, but the temps still reached the upper 50's. The good news is that it looks like these temps are gonna be around for most of the coming week! Nothing like being able to run the boat up until Thanksgiving! (Before you even get started, all of you in Florida be quiet! :p ) I'll post a few pics when I get them tomorrow afternoon.
