Default Prop Selection 24 Baja

I currently own a 1987 Baja 240 Sport with a 460 OMC Engine with King Cobra drive. I am trying to select the bet prop for this boat which will get me out of the hole fastest and hopefully provide me with the highest top-end speed available (hopefully there is a prop for such a combination). Any suggestions on how to figure out what prop would be best for my needs?

I would start with about a 24 pitch.

Hole shot and top end are two different things. Most the really want the hole shot loose the top end, and if all you want is top end, you will have hell getting the boat on plane.

Without more information I would say a 24 pitch three blade would be a good place to start.

I run a 23 pitch mirage on my 88 240 sport. Its not the fasted out of the hole. But its a good overall performance prop. I currently tap out just under 60mph with a stock 454 mag merc.

Is this a trick question? I have never seen a Baja with OMC setup. I thought they only used Merc.

Back in 1987 it is very possible that it was factory installed? I remember installing many Yamaha I/O's around 89' also.....

As I recall, the OMC king cobra of that era
was a dog clutch shifter unit ( similar to
a merc alpha)

The gearing for those were in the 1.3:1
neighborhood, (opposed to the 1.5:1 ratio
you would normally see with a bravo) so
I would say that 21 pitch is about all you're going to be
able to swing with that set up.

Not a bad setup, a 460 Lincoln torque monster with a King Cobra outdrive. Should push the 24 pretty good. The king cobra was designed for the big block Ford motor, much stronger than a cobra. As stated before, check the gear ratio, that is where I would start, then find out what rpm the 460 can turn safely, from the ratio, rpm and weight you can get a better clue what prop for speed and hole shot you can use.

Yikes! Four year old thread. Doesn't look like 24Baja has been around in awhile....
