25 O/L with 600-650 hp
Guy's, my buddy is in the process up upgrading his 03 outlaw. What kind of speeds and handling can he expect from this boat with about 600-650hp? I have searched around and haven't found any real world #'s...
|
Re: 25 O/L with 600-650 hp
Mid 70's. Will handle just fine at those speeds.
|
Re: 25 O/L with 600-650 hp
My dad has a 25 Outlaw with an M3 Pro Charger. I have seen speeds a bit over 80mph in it. His 25 Outlaw handles the power and speed much better than my 24 Outlaw.

My old 2003 25 outlaw ran 70 to 72 on gps with a 496HO. |
Re: 25 O/L with 600-650 hp
Thanks for the replies. I was thinking at least 80 with possibly 85. Thanks again.

Re: 25 O/L with 600-650 hp
I agree with low 80's. Gonna need hydraulic steering & K-planes & a new propeller, probably a 30 bravo 1 to start with
|
Re: 25 O/L with 600-650 hp
I agree with Dock, we have a customer running about 640 HP with a pro-charger at about 4 psi. boat runs right at 75-76 every day. this is a '04 25 O/L
|
Re: 25 O/L with 600-650 hp
That seems a little slow to me based on the fact many people have stated 69-72 mph gps with 496ho/425hp depending on the usual variables...

Re: 25 O/L with 600-650 hp
25 outlawas with stock 425 hos rarley run 72 on gps

Re: 25 O/L with 600-650 hp
and before allt eh 25o/l owners jump on my case, i disnt say it isnt possible for one to run 72 on gps with a 425.. i know it is possible and i also know it has been discussed here many times. im just saying it seems the average is more like 68-70.

There is absolutley no reason (IMO) a true 640HP isn't pushing that rig near to 80. |
Re: 25 O/L with 600-650 hp
he may be running even less boost most of the time to be honest with you, just going off what i have been told. i know he runs a labbed 28 most of the time with his wife and 2 kids on board. it is possible that with a prop change it coud run 80.

Re: 25 O/L with 600-650 hp
Need to be careful to really evaluate the horsepower on 496"s with superchargers. Remember the supercharger itself uses 50-75 horsepower at full boost to make its power. Some manufacturers are overstating horsepower at the crank. If you have 650HP advertised less 50-75HP for a 575HP net then the speeds expected will have to be based on this "real" number. Just a thought for your planning.

Re: 25 O/L with 600-650 hp
I highly doubt a 25 o.l. w/ H.O. will hit the low 70's,, maybe on fumes in cold air temp, cold water, running down river w/ a tail wind..

If you have owned a 25 Outlaw I take back my comments. I have never owned an "open bow" 28' (including swim platform) Sunsation, so you will never hear me comment on the speed, performance, etc. that it lacks. |

I believe you but I wonder why my brother cant break 67 with a labbed prop by bblades? It wouldnt break 65 with a stock prop. I cant figure out why it would be slower?? I told him it was cuz he couldnt drive :D |
Re: 25 O/L with 600-650 hp
Neil,, I fail to see where I quoted your post ?? I certainly didn't insinuate you were a liar. The speeds of 25 O.L.'s w/ H.O. has been beaten to death over the years, thats what I was referring to. I personally know 2 people w/ 25 outlaws, w/ H.O.'s and they see 65-66 with half fuel and 2 people.. Fumes in the spring or fall they may see 68-69.. low 70's,, fine,, if thats what you say... Owned, driven, Been around, and demo'ed enough Baja's to know their speeds.. I don't own an " open bow " Sunsation 288...

Re: 25 O/L with 600-650 hp
I made minor, inexpensive modifications that DID make a difference... First I sent my 23 P 3 blade to Darrin at Houston Prop for Labbing... When I sent it to him he was just unvailing the accelerator process. I took a shot in the dark and he did it. Basically its cupping the edges of the blades. Lastly I added a k&n filter and eliminated the muffler tips with straight un muffled tips from corsa. Sounded great and ran great... I would buy another Baja in a heartbeat...

Not that I don't love our Sunsation,, we certainly do,, but I have a special place for Baja's, it was our first " off-shore " type boat and got me hooked. I looked at many 25 O.L's and 275's and 272's and would buy another without question also..
just wanted something different and ended up w/ the 288 |

I will easily run 69-70 all summer with two passengers, full gear and 1/2 thank. The best I have seen was on a cool day in September, 4 passengers, 1/2 thanks, full gear... 72 mph  And yep, all GPS speeds. Thank you Neil for all the mods you made to the boat... I would think the mufflers are worth a 1.5 - 2 mph and the Labed prop is a + 2 mph. Great setup. Chris, will I have the chance to meet you on next GLH's milk run? |

Re: 25 O/L with 600-650 hp
i have an 02 25 outlaw with an ho. i have hit 70 with low full and 2 people more then once. also with bad plugs(not too bad) and dirty air filter. bone stock 23 mirage plus. now chris i know what your saying. i have talked with alot of people who own or owened 25 outlaws with same power and they say 65-68 for top speeds, this is why people give me dirty looks when i say i hit 70. i think it depends on how long the hull was in the mold. i know no 2 boats are the same but there are some big diffs. in speeds on the 25 outlaw. im glad i got a good one.lol.

Re: 25 O/L with 600-650 hp
P.S. My guess on the 650 H.P. O.L. would be 80 mph...

I have been in serveral 25's with 502 Mags and they ran a true 66 to 67 MPH. I am not suprised the 496HO is a little faster because that is a strong engine. So lets say the boat is a 70 MPH boat with 415 HP. Adding 185 more horsepower with a 20HP to 1 MPH ratio on a true deep vee hull and you should see a 9.25 MPH increase. My first estimate was based on the 66 MPH speeds I was use to seeing with 502's and I came up with 75.25 MPH or mid seventies. Dock |
Re: 25 O/L with 600-650 hp
It is neither yet. He is purchasing parts now, it will be a 540 cu with the best parts $$ can buy. He wants to keep the reliability high, compression low and doesn't want something that can't idle through the harbour. He would like to see 80mph as well...

Re: 25 O/L with 600-650 hp
most stock 25 OL come with 24`Bravo 1 Props
If you want to get 70 MPH just below the rev limiter at 5100 RPM - this would result into a Prop slip of just 6 % - possible ?? |

The 24 Bravo is probably the worst prop you can use on a 25 Outlaw... To much stern lift witch is really bad for that hull My labed 23 mirage plus is now more likely a 24", add one inch for the cup = +/- 25". With 1.5 gear ratio will run right at 70 mph with +/- 10-13 % slip. |

You shouldn't be surprised to see someone disagree with you and/or ask for proof...as in pictures or video. Hard to believe your old boat ran 7mph faster with a labbed prop and minor exhaust mods. Are you sure you're not talking speedo numbers???
Because either you're boat is some 500-700 lbs lighter than other 25 OL's or your engine is really a 500hp. Possibly Baja Marine would rather list the low number and have boats be faster than advertise the high number and have complaints up the azz. Can only speak from my experience. |
