Help me make a decision
Ok,
I am thinking o f trading my 33 Outlaw in for a 36 outlaw. The one I am looking at is a '04 leftover.I can get a very good deal on this boat and they will take mine on trade with almost no loss from what I paid for it 2 years ago. Brand new with 496HO's. My 33 has 500efi's which I love. My questions are: How fast is the 36 with this power? Will I be happy with this set up? Again, I love my 500's. Should I buy a 35 instead since the 36 is discontinued? (No deals on the 35, I will have to pay about 25K more. Also, I like the looks of the 36 better, but there is a resale issue with a discontinued boat). Should i just shut up and keep the 33. (It is a '98 but is in excellent shape with low hours and can get 78mph on a good day). Thanks |

Bret,
If speed is the issue keep your 33 or go with the new 35. If you are looking for extra room and improved ride then you will love the 36. I would say the 36 w/ 496HO's would be 8-10 MPH slower then your 33 w/ 500's. Here are some pictures of the 33 next to the 36. Dock |

Here is an interesting picture also comparing the 36 to the 42 Fountain.
Look at how the 36 is taller then the 42 even with a full windshield. Fountain builds a great boat, but this is why they are so fast. |
Re: Help me make a decision
Let's see pictures of your 33. I might have sold my boat

Re: Help me make a decision
What is the reason for wanting to getting rid of the 33?

Re: Help me make a decision
There was a guy at the lake travis poker run that had a 36 with 496 ho's. said it would do around 68.
doc's right on with the 10mph slower. I didnt know much about the 33/36 ride, but i did have a passenger that said he could tell the difference in the ride. said the 36 was more stable. |

I would have to agree about the speeds. I ran 85 miles last year in a poker run on Lake Erie side by side the whole way with a 36 ol with 496 HO's and we ran 67-69 all day long. But In good water I could barley edge him out. I have a 302 with 454 mag mpi's. Keep the 33 or buy the 36 and put the extra 25k in motor work in the 36. |

Thanks Guys,
I suppose I could live with 68-69. Maybe labbed props and a little tweaking to get it into the low 70's. I really like the looks of the 36 in the water. The 33 is all cockit where as the 36 has a longer nose and looks more proportional IMO. I haven't even seen a 35 yet but the pics look like a 30OL with a 33 cockpit. Here is a pic of the 36 I am looking at. |

thats a bad azz looking 36 :D

Yea, I think it's pretty bad azz myself. I have to get use to all that yellow though. The whole cockpit liner and sun deck is yellow also. Of course, I got use to my "Miami Vice" colors on my 33. |
Re: Help me make a decision
well when do you pick it up :D
|
Re: Help me make a decision
Just started the back and forth. You know; "I can only go this low, but let me go talk to my manager." I am pretty close to where I want to be just have to get him to include the trailer in the deal.
|
Re: Help me make a decision
Good looking boat. With all that Red & Yellow you will be "Crayola Crazy II". :evilb:
Is Eagle still in the trailer business? I always thought they built a quality product, but thought I heard they were gone? Keep us updated, hope the deal goes well. |
Re: Help me make a decision
Great looking 36! You WILL get used to the yellow, and then you will wonder how you were ever happy with Miami Vice colours at all (not that your ī98 boat isnīt a cool boat, too) Thats just how it works with paint schemes! However getting used to being even 5 mph slower, even if you donīt run WOT very often. Thatīs difficult! And giving up the blue motor bonus is....a real tough one!
But the yellowbird does look cool........... :D :D :D Do it! |
Re: Help me make a decision
Cool looking boat, you could modify the 496's to get some speed back. If your used to going 78 and can only go 68 it will SUCK though. You can not go backwards (at least I can't). My boat now runs between 88-93 depending on load and prop,my bud bought a 28 ft checkmate with a 525sc single,I was excited to drive it because it was something new and different. It just felt like you were crawling though and was a big let down, felt gutless. 78 mph is a respectable speed ,68 puts you back in most typical boats leauge. I don't always run my boat close to max speed or anything but like they say,you can never go back,Smitty

Re: Help me make a decision
I really like the looks of the 36. Why don't you have them put the 500's in the 36 and the HO's in the 33. Win win! :evilb: After owning a Blue Motor, I would never go back to any stock Merc offering!
|
Re: Help me make a decision
I think the 36 is one of the best looking boats out there...The 35 doesnt do
it for me, At all.......One mans useless opinion... :D |
Re: Help me make a decision
Buy the 36 and put some CMI exhaust and some other minor work and you'll be in the mid seventies.

Thats what I'm thinking. Or maybe Raylars kit. I do like warranties on new motors though and really like the closed cooling of the 496. Lets see if I can get this deal done. |
Re: Help me make a decision
I Love my 36 with HO's, I can see 70-72 on my speedo everyday. The room and the ride is awesome. I ran with a 35 last weekend with HO's. He had 8 people and 1/4 tank of fuel I had 4 people and was full of fuel he was pulling me by I would guess 2 mph my speedo was not working. He was running 4600 rpm's and needs to be propped. I like the looks of the 36 better and love the lay out compared to the 35.

Re: Help me make a decision
I think you should think about it very rationally. It is nearly a three year old boat. (2007 models will be out by June-July, I think) Look at what a used 2004 is selling for compared to your final buy price. You will be selling a 2004 when the time comes and no one will care when you bought it, just how many hours and current condition. If there is only a $25k difference to go to a new 35, you should consider it seriously and also shop other dealers on the price of a new 35. There can be more than a $30k difference from one dealer to the next on a boat that size. On a new factory ordered boat, you have the freedom to pick the graphics, equipment and configuration tailored exactly to your taste.
I have a 2005 40 Outlaw with twin 496 HO's, love the boat. We just put CMI headers on it and no mufflers, we did 66 (GPS speedo) on a 10 minute test run last week, nearly full tank of fuel and three adults, full gear. With the CMI headers, I believe we honestly picked up 3-4 mph over stock with mufflers. In the right conditions it should be 68 - 69 capable, as is. The best we ever did without the CMI headers, on GPS was 65.2, but that was two aboard, 1/4 tank and minimal equipment. So judge what a 35/36 will do reflecting on those numbers. I'm happy with the performance because we need size on Lake Michigan. You may however be disappointed coming down that much in speed. Good luck! |
Re: Help me make a decision
BRET, did your boat come from Wisconsin by any chance?? i think i used to work on your boat......we sold a 36 O/l with HOs last summer it ran 70 on gps regardless of fuel/load. if you are happy with your 33 i know you will like a 36....

Yes, I came from Rod Dash at Performance Marine. Boat was originally from Iowa. He was great to me but I understand that later he was put in jail for the same thing National Marine was doing. |

I have looked and the 04 prices are about what I will be paying for this boat. I don't know if I like the 35 (have Never seen one except in pics) I know I like the 36. Also, I can't imagine that the 35 will ride better than the 36, especially with the huge pad on the keel. It probably rides like the old fountains with the straight bottoms. This was how they used to get speed from their hulls. With a pad you lose some of the deep Vee ride advantage for the sake of speed. It's like riding on a flat surface i.e. less deadrise. I do like the cabin in the 35, I have no need for a bed and the fiberglass is an easy cleanup with kids. Ever try to vaccuum up soggy Potato chips from the cabin floor? I don't really care too much about resale, I plan on keeping the boat until the depreciation levels off. At a certain point these boats go tho about 70K and seem to stay at that price. Anyhow, boats are definatly not an investment and if you look at them that way, how can you enjoy them? |
Re: Help me make a decision
Brett,
I almost boat that 36 last November. Instead I went with a 2004 342 that Fox Chapel had. The guys there couldn't be nicer and more professional - Pete, Jay, Ron, the whole gang are great. Their service and support has been incredible and the deal went through painlessly. I just chose the boat with a few more options - that 36 didn't have A/C or TV, etc....but it was a very nice boat. I just thought, living in Pittsburgh, it was a little too "Steeler-y" with all the yellow & black... I ran head to head with a 36 with 496 HOs down. It ran almost 70 in 2' chop. That was with CMI headers. If you can deal with your new boat going slower than your old boat, do it, because you will be getting a great newer boat that rides better. But if speed is all you want, you will have to spend lots more $$$ just to get to where you are now... |

Adding CMI headers kits to your 496 engines will net you 55+HP. We are currently stocking the 496 Kits and look forward to helping any of you out if we can!!
Please call us at (847) 623-2737! Good luck with your decision. |

Re: Help me make a decision
"Mello Yello"
"High Yields" Put a pair of Whipples on those 496's, with CMI's, and I'd bet you see high 70's, maybe 80MPH. I've seriously considered a 36. I think they're one of the best looking production boats out there. I2D |
Re: Help me make a decision
I saw Bret's new ride yesterday. We launched her and put it in his new boathouse. The boat is unbelievable. I cant say enough about Baja. If I could quit smoking Id buy another one in a heartbeat
