Interesting Thread

A guy with a nice "FAST" Baja called me today laughing his head off at this thread over on TBM. He does not post hardly at all anymore because of the mentality of some on these sites. I had to go look and it is a shame that people will not accept the facts.

There has been a lot of brain washing by smaller dealers in my opinion. Especially ones that do not have Mechanics on staff certified to work on the blue motors, and find a need to bad mouth them and push the black motors.

Personally I have found the 500EFI to be the most reliable engine that Mercury as ever built in my opinion. You get out of a motor what you put into it, regardless of color.

What is you opinion?

The only bad thing I have to say about
the blue motors is the $$$$

I've had 2 sets......it would be hard to go back to black.

On my HP500's, I had the valve spring problem that
occured during a certain vintage..

That was the only hiccup I had with either
sets.

( now, the drives are another story)

I personaly think an engine is only as good as the person servicing it. I tend to agree that if you take care of what you have, keep it serviced and don't abuse it, any stock engine should survive many hours of use. I would not hesitate to go Blue in my next boat if the cost allows it. I would love to own a 36 with blue motors one day, that is my long term goal.

Funny you point out that thread Dock, I sent a link to that thread to a buddy of mine with 500s in his older Fountain that he has many hours on without any problems. He got quite a chuckle out of that.

The only thing I know of the 500's is the carb version has had many valve problems. My brother-in-law has drop a valve once and had a valve seat crack and drop. Just this past weekend my buddy floated a valve and the keepers fell out. But again these were both carb versions

Have you seen any drop in performance? Thats awesome. Mine have over 400 hrs now. I rebuilt the top end at 350 with new springs/valve seats and head gaskets. I should be good for another 3-400.
