Re: This is Interesting
Hopefully this isnt construed as Baja bashing/trolling, since I am currently in the market for a 405, or 442. Last month an employee of MaineMax drowned at Lake Powell when the boat she was a passenger in hit a large wake off of a tour boat , and the hull split in two. I havent heard confirmation on what brand of boat it is, but I have heard rumors that it was indeed a Baja. Can anyone confirm or deny the rumors and shed some light on what kind of boat it was?

The story I'm hearing is that you MUST come off plane for these tour boat wakes, and she did not. My guess, and this is just a guess based on what facts I have heard is that she stuffed the boat. If she did it is highly likely that the top deck seperated from the hull. This is common in any brand. There are pictures of a 311 Formula doing this and actually coming apart. I have owned Baja's since 1999 and know a hundred people with them and they do not split in half. |

Look luck with your shopping. I have always liked the 442 and there are some nice deals out there on that boat. But the 405 is growing on me fast. At first I did not know what to think about this boat, but the more I see it the more I like it. There was a beautiful 405 running the Destin Poker Run in August and it looked GREAT on plane. |

I have pictures of mine in 5 footers with the boat a couple of feet out of the water. Broke some small stuff but the hull is fine. |

I got hooked on the 405. Like Doc, I didn't like it at first but it grows on you after a few looks...............let me know if you want some insight while shopping. I like spending other people's money............................. |
Re: This is Interesting
Scott--Sorry you drive a F350--no matter what Dock says about Fords. I'm suprised it pulls that 405 :D Dodge Cummins is the only way to go!!!!!
P.S. Good to hear from you again--Looks like your lik'n that 405. Sorry we couldn't hook up on your 342---still look'n--you sure you don't need a good 275 Boss????? :D Jay |
Re: This is Interesting
Doc, I ordered my new polished actuator for the hatch. I also did a little research before I boat my first boat last month. Which is a 99' 36 OL W/500HP's. Great boat with loads of options. I took rides in fountains, Eliminators, Donzi's, some boats I never heard the names of and I wouldn't trade my Baja for any of them. And I don't think there are so many of the other boats for sale because those guys are upgrading. I would say the jumped on the hype and found out they were not true to the sport/hobby and more importantly couldn't afford the boat or the expense's that come with it. Just my two cents.

Re: This is Interesting
Time to add my .02. I had a nice scare at the end of the boating season here in Pittsburgh this year. Got a 1988 240 Sport and I like to air it out from cruiser wake. Hey, gotta work with what you got. So. This big 50 footer is throwing some wake. Didnt realize how big till too late and I was a little overtrimmed for it. Next thing I know is the boat is completely airbourne. The bow was at about 80% up angle. All I saw in front of me was the front deck. And I was pretty high. Came down and kept bouncing up from following wake till I could get it trimmed down and get the speed down. One hell of a ride. Only damage to the boat was the pins on the starboard trim tab. They break to prevent damage to the tab or transom. No stress cracks in the hull. No de-lamination. No broken stringers. I can only imagine the damage in a boat with a lighter layup.
