Baja owners please don't take it personal these are just expensive toys to go out in and have fun!!! You should know you get what you pay for I'm sure every boat owner has or have had plenty of other toys in there life that you can say the same thing for. And formulas ALWAYS, ALWAYS, have been expensive. They must be doing something right!!!!! I have thrown this 33 into everything my GF can withstand and then some,(had some nice 4' launch wakes off a big cruiser last weekend), and the only stress cracks I have are the smile lines on my face, and a bunch of boat salad in the floor. I read an interesting thread in the Cig area, stating that it all boils down to Pride of Ownership, if your happy with what you have and the money you spent on it then nothing else matters. I would hope that anybody spending 100k+ for something would do the research for themselves and find out what best suits them and not try and start a fued over who builds a better boat, I have been more than Happy with mine and thats all I give a s**t about. So lets end this mess and get back to some usefull forum topics like hot babes in bikinis on a trampoline.:cool-smiley-027: |

I have a 04' 292 and love it. I do wish it had full hydraulic steering, but not huge issue. It does have mechanical trim and drive indicators which are nice. I had a 25OL before this and we had just as much fun. We stepped up to the 292 to better handle rougher water and it does. The Formula is definitely better built and has much, much nicer fit and finish. Interiors and cockpits are nicer also. You will not find bare wood or fiberglass on a Formula(no offense Baja guys, they are good boats also). My Formula is like a rock compared to the Baja, no rattles or squeaks( I did not push the little 25OL trying to make a race boat either). I actually considered a 29OL also but heard of some handling issues with it compared to the 25OL or the 33OL. I have been in several 33OL and they ride nice. My 292 is like driving a sports car. It may be a little slower to plane than some, but it is fun to have someone take off beside you pulling away thinking they are faster only to be passed very shortly and never seen again. The small blocks do drink a little less than big blocks which is a plus. 292 will cruise @ 48-50mph @3800-4000 all day long. Ran beside a 29OL on a rough day on Lake Travis and the OL seemed to ride much wetter and rougher than my 292 but that could have been driver and trim. Enough off me rambling hope this helps. Like stated previously, both are good boats, have different feels due to bottom design, so drive both and make your own decision and you should be happy with either. 5 yr bow to stern warranty from Formula is nice:) Have considered selling mine, not as much time with 1 yr old.

one thing that does bother me is baja's don;t have alot of room to work in the engine compartment. I know the bigger 35 and up do. I can't believe how little room there is in the 30 engine compartment. Anyway I am selling my 25 and have been looking in the 30 range and can't seem to get my 2 Baja dealers one that I bought my 25 from and the other closer to me, to give me a call back and talk. Starting to frustrate me and I am looking at other brands now. Anyone got anymore ideas??? Sorry, I didn't mean to hijack the thread
|
Yeah, buy a used one :D

What king of money you looking to spend. 50K or 70-75K.
the 70-75K range should get you a nice 29OL yr 2003-2004 with HO's. Mine should still be on boat trader from where I traded. Dennis |
Thats where I will be at yes 70-75 k.

You know there are several hundred Baja owners on this forum daily and I have to ask why you fell the need to come over here and insult all of us that own a Baja when this question was asked on the Formula thread also. I know it is your opinion and you are entitled to it just like the rest of us but when you cut down a brand you cut down each and every person that owns that brand. For the money I have not found a boat that I like and enjoy more then any of the three Baja's I have owned. I can spend a LOT more money, but I cannot have any more enjoyment then we have had with our 36 Outlaw. If you look at these pictures you see that fit and finish did not help this boat stay together any better then others across a large cruiser wake. They are all wood and fiberglass when it comes down to it. Dock I do like my old school 86 320 though, 21 yrs and still goin! |

It was a joke. While I've never had to do that....I usually have the family onboard and don't race it either.

On my 25OL(01') there was plywood, not balsa coring, that was not covered in glass and had no sealer on it, most was undr the dash area. This is a place for water intrusion and will allow rot. You should never have unsealed balsa as it will act as a sponge, and there is nothing wrong with wood construction as long as it is sealed properly. Inside of the hull behind the liner was all unpainted glass and not very pretty or smooth. Although these are not neccessarily structural issues it does show the attention to detail in the build proccess. I am in the marine business and mostly deal with larger Yachts and sailboats and the Formulas are closer in build to the higher end stuff than your average trailer boat. I have not found any unpainted or bare edged wood(unsealed) in my Formula(04'). I just feel that if a company goes to the trouble to paint and make the stuff that you normally do not see look right that they made everyhting right and did not cut corners, if they don't do that was else did they miss???? I am not bashing Baja, just trying to show differences.

there was a 27 or 29 formula a yellow one from cape cod and a red 357 that I would run against every summer and in smooth water I would kill them in rough sure I would get some air but always stead 150 in front of them. I would see them coming out of the canal on buzzards bay side the rough side:p I felt bad for the yellow boat I think we each up grade doing the winter:p and then theres was a 242 with twin 350s I would smoke him even more we was at the marina next to mine, that was in the 90s before my kid was born and I use to tell the wife fast is smooth:p . so test ride both if you can 29ol is 29ft 29formula is 27ft. and if you pay near full retail on any boat shame on you. I know my buds 1st formula came with the full cabin but not installed, 500s and in 99 he paid 150,000 because he was racing it. the 02 was race only and was 175,000 with 525s.

By 245 did awesome in it for the year I had it up there though! :drink: |
One big reason I went with a 32 foot boat was to get a better ride, way better then my 24 footer!
you should see some of these guys try to run cats on Erie! |
Erie is a beast that is forsure! That is why I am looking to go bigger. Although I have made my way to the islands from Toledo several times.
I have never seen them side by side but by pictures, isn't the 29 ol a lot bigger than the 292? |
sounds like every boat maker has their problems

I have seen them side by side and driven both. The 29 Outlaw is much bigger physicaly than the 292. The 29 is s true 29 foot boat plus the add on swim platform. The 292 is closer to a 27 foot running surface with the integral swim platform. The Outlaw has a larger cabin as well as a much deeper freeboard. As with any of these comparison threads, for the most part it is just opinion banter thrown back and forth. The only way to tell which boat is the best for you is to drive them and find out for yourself. |

I do have to say that we run my friends 353 pretty hard all summer, does 97 and has not fallen apart yet! ran the last poker run in 4-5 footers at 93-95 MPH most of the time running a 36 Apache! we are Lake Erie and if you have ever heard, it is not exactly a calm lake, worse ride then the ocean I am told by many due to the shallow waters and chop, when it is 6 footers here they are 6 ft high and 6 ft apart, makes for a rough ride.

THATS BECAUSE ITS A 86 ,A LOT OF BOATS MADE IN THE 80s were screwed in to the floor which will pull out over 20yrs.plus they only used about 4 to 6 screws per seat back then and bolted the side to the gunnel which a lot of companies do to day which sucks. my new race bolsters have 20 screws or bolts which ever you want to use. you can pull the middle floor up unscrew it and put a star nut so you will be bolting the seat down or glass a 2x4 over the old holes then when you put the longer lag bolts in the seat is going no wear. if you want to read about floor replacement, stringer , bulkhead just look at jons in the Q A FORUM I brought it to the top you can see what I have been talking about pulling the mid floor up then glass the wood covered in glass hope that helps. I have owned mine for 17yrs. art
Thanks, Tim |
