I'm not a huge Reggie or Rountain fan, nor really a huge Baja fan either, so this is a pretty "unbiased" opinion.
My understanding is that Fountain owed Mercury/Brunswick considerable liabilities. Meanwhile, Baja was a money loser for them with negative cashflows and little sign of changing. They then agreed to "sell" it to Fountain for basically nothing in exchange for reducing some of Fountains liabilities to them. Therefore, Fountain was basically told to take Baja, and he's trying to make the best of it. The fact it was not making money at all currently, means that to continue to produce in Ohio would be foolish, to basically expect a better return with the same operation. The only way to save Baja and try and return it to profitability is to maximize economies of scale. This means one factory, mostly redundant employees, etc. To continue operating Baja as it had been would have put both under. Just my opinion looking at the outside of this deal, and I clearly could be very wrong. I hope both can recover and grow, but that is definitely a challenge in this economy. |
Was Baja a money loser for Brunswick? They always seemed to sell a decent number of boats. Just curious, not trying to argue.

Hats off to Fountain for making a great brand even better...
Standard Hyd steering and tabs, Bonded deck to hull and real stringers are a must for offshore boats. Your going to see a lot of those Blue motors in them now. |
So whats the latest on the 26s? Havent heard "much" on them lately!

I talked to the supposed "head of Baja"
@ Captain Ron's after we got done with the Shootout on Sunday ...he's the guy in the black shirt, right above the outboard motor just to the left of Reggie. Appartenty, he saw the Hawkeye Boat Sales sticker just in front of the vent, and thought I was somebody, when we came rolling in:rolleyes: He was a nice enough guy though, very outgoing, I asked what they had going on, he said they had several in the oven, 4 or 5...can't remember which models he said. Reggie was on the radio, talking about how nice it was to see all the Fountains and Baja's out here. He used Fountain and Baja in the same sentence numerous times. I did tell Reggie that he needed to get some Baja logo's on his outfits....he did say yes, and he was having them made |

Looks good with the Hand rail on Front. I wonder if we will be able to buy these and install them on our 23's.

on Saturday when I was hearing the results of what some of the boats that have ran there the last few years were turning in, beforeI got to the line....some were 10 mph slow. So, comes my turn......77 mph, GPS speedo, and hand held saying 85, go back up, go again.....80 mph, speedo and hand held 86.5. They announce later in the day that there might be some problems with the radar guns ??? Sunday, first run, they gave me 84, speedo looked like 85, forgot to turn on the hand held, second run, they gave me 85, speedo was past 86, hand held said 87 Didn't really matter because they consolidated classes and they threw me in with boats that were probably 750+ hp..., the other two boats both ran over 100. But, at least I made it on to the shootout poster:drink: And, had my 5 minutes of fame when the TV guys interviewed me during inspection:rolleyes: |
Recieved the new pwr boat mag today. Had a decent writeup on the 26OL. They will be installing Lathem marine hydolic steering. Also claimed to run a 1.65 drive with a 4 blade prop. Claimed should get a few mph with the new Baja vs the old. with these enhancments and the lighter construction. Also talked about not using the liner system. I know some of this was already mentioned but just passing it along :drink:

Would you rather have the parent company be the manufacturer of the worlds fastest and best selling high performance V-hulls or Brunswick the manufacturer of Sea-Rays and Bayliners?
"truth hurts" but that one left me heading for the refrigerator to get ice for my nuts! |
