I guess my question would be where is he going to run the boat and what type of boating does he plan to do?
Pleasure, cruising, poker runs, etc?
The engine and drive will cost as much or more then the hull and it will be a tough resale. If he is in big water or plans to do poker runs he will want a larger boat after one season.

Will I had a 2001 model 272 Boss with 502 mag and it was a 65 MPH boat. The 272 and newer versions are great all around boats. Sometimes I wish we had kept it but we got caught up in the poker run thing and it was just not enough boat.

It used to be that the bottom design of the 278 was identical to the 26ol. The CG will be SLIGHTLY further foward on the 278 due to some of the amenities in the cabin, storage, windshield, etc....but who knows now that Reginald is making/has made all his go fast changes, Hell, maybe you'll run 80 with a Mag.

I was experimenting a while back- pulled the cabin pads out.
(all velcro/drop in + 3 screws holding the center vbirth pad).
Felt like 150lbs of stuff total. Was an instant 1-1.5mph gps increase.
The front "felt" lighter and was more responsive to trim.

Baja 272
I dont know exactly what the 278 performance is but I have a 1998 272. When I originally purchased the boat it had the stock 454 with the side load Whipple Charger and bigger injectors, the boat ran 81 on GPS after trying a few different props. In 2006 I pulled the 454 and went to a 540 with eldebrock marine heads, 871 blower shop blower with the super chiller. The best I got out of it was 87 on GPS when i blew the drive. I pulled the drive and went to the IMCO Extreme. The best i got out of it was 92.6 on GPS.
