The mag motors have forged cranks, pistons etc. and are 4 bolt main, the mag heads are rectangular vs oval port. The max rpm's are different for the two.

They're not the same, yes you can boost them up a bit,
but the real deal is that those boats, generally, aren't
going to be equipt with external steering, and k-planes,
probably doesnt have the most aggressive x dimension
either, and if you're concerned with the extra performance,
these things are a must.

It's a buyers market now, hold out for the one
that you really want...getting rid of them is not
as easy, if you buy one and don't like it.

Not that there was anything wrong with it, but
the 29 w/7.4's was the boat that I owned for the shortest
period of time ( 1.5 years ) before it, I had a 223 Bandit that ran 75 +, fun boat, thought I could give up some speed for ride.. didn't work, after I got rid of the 29 w/7.4's....got a
29 w/HP500's and kept it for 6 years, loved that boat.

If you're coming out of a 272 and it had a 502
in it, a 29 w/base 454's is going to run about
the same as a 272 or 25 O/L does performance wise,
but, it will ride better, most people, when they make
a jump, expect a little bit better performance.

Yeah I agree, nice boat though for 36k, hard to pass up on, No external steering (I assume part of the sst package). Decent looking 99 33 outlaw with 500HP's on ebay I threw a bid at it. Interior looks moderately faded for 270 hours. It's bigger than I need(wonder if it would fit in my 40ft garage? on the trailer of course

I thought there would be no difference in the X dimension despite the lower HP motors

we ran a 99 29 outlaw all summer and with the 385 mags and 24 bravos we are off the limiters at 65-67 gps speeds. IMO with 310's it might be a little under powerd.

There might not be, but it's more likely
that someone, or a dealer would order a raised
X with mags or better, than to do so with base power.

SST only gets you K-planes, external steering
was usually installed standard on 385's and 496's
and up.

A friend had a 33 and he only had a 40 foot garage,
and it fit.

Don't overlook 33's, they have a ton of cockpit space,
they're very similar performance wise to a 29, very nimble, and to me, they seem like a better balanced boat.

Did you see this 33?

http://www.offshoreonlyclassifieds.c...o26582-en.html

I have a '98 29 with 7.4 MPI's (310 each) and Mirage 23's. It pops out of the hole pretty well and comes up on plane pretty quickly. It tops at 65MPH (gps'd). I would like more power but who wouldn't? I spoke with a factory Merc rep and he told me I could get 500HP naturally asperated out of these motors and not have to worry about cast crank.

My next upgrade is going to be external steering. I still only have a little over 200 hours on the boat so not motor work for a while. When the time comes I may just look for some 496 HO take outs.

If you can swing it GO for the 33. Cabin is the same but the cockpit room in unreal compared to the 29. Even room for a stripper pole!

Not sure about a 99 but in 97 there was a 7.4 LX that is rated at 330hp. It looks just like a mag.
