29 outlaw
Hello everyone, I'm new here but not new to Baja boats. I just sold my 01 272, and am looking at a 99 29 outlaw with twin 454mpi's. The owner says they are 330 mercs, but I suspect they are 310hp each. Real nice boat from what I can see with under 150 hrs for under 40k, garaged since new one owner. What kind of performance(real) can I expect. My friend says it will be a slug without the mag motors. Who has real world experince with this boat and good and bad about it. I'm about to finalize the deal within the next week. Thanks :ernaehrung004:

Con,
Well I don't have a 29 but a 322 with twin 454's (310's) 23" props and I push it 70mph at the top end. I would expect the 29 to hit 72-74mph. |
My 29 originally had 310's when I bought it. You can expect an honest 62-65 mph depending on the props. I changed the 310's out for 502's after two hours and picked up about 10 mph.It was a great boat and that sounds like a pretty good deal. Good Luck with it.
|
I have a '99 with twin mags, and I've seen 73 gps with 4 blade props, 76 with 3 blades. Mags are 385 hp each. I have to agree that the non mags are gonna be mid 60's at best.
Mine is for sale by the way.... |
I figured it was mid 60's at best, my main concern is planing, not so much the topend, but I would prefer the mags by all means, owever I've been looking for several months and it seems the best buy for my money.
|
Hole shot 4 blades are the only way to go.
|
There is a very clean 29 with 385's on ebay right now, 150 hrs. Everyone above is right about the speed with 310's 62-64. Not sure how that 322 is going 70mph with 310's but nice work?!!
I sold 3 29's this year one with 385's 70-72, and two with 496 MAGS 69-71. All GPS numbers. |
I had a 29 w/7.4's....low 60's is all it would really do.
....although the faria speedo would read 72 |
Are the shortblocks on the 454's the same between the mag and 310mpi, can the cylinder heads and cams be swapped out for the extra hp? I did see the boat on ebay she's in oregon in in pennsylvania to bad it looks sweet
|
The MAG has a 4bolt main and the 310 is a two bolt. I am sure that someone would know more than me, but im sure a cam and other work will up the HP. I would think it would be much cheaper and less time consuming to find a boat with the power already in it!

but the real deal is that those boats, generally, aren't going to be equipt with external steering, and k-planes, probably doesnt have the most aggressive x dimension either, and if you're concerned with the extra performance, these things are a must. It's a buyers market now, hold out for the one that you really want...getting rid of them is not as easy, if you buy one and don't like it. Not that there was anything wrong with it, but the 29 w/7.4's was the boat that I owned for the shortest period of time ( 1.5 years ) before it, I had a 223 Bandit that ran 75 +, fun boat, thought I could give up some speed for ride.. didn't work, after I got rid of the 29 w/7.4's....got a 29 w/HP500's and kept it for 6 years, loved that boat. If you're coming out of a 272 and it had a 502 in it, a 29 w/base 454's is going to run about the same as a 272 or 25 O/L does performance wise, but, it will ride better, most people, when they make a jump, expect a little bit better performance. |
Yeah I agree, nice boat though for 36k, hard to pass up on, No external steering (I assume part of the sst package). Decent looking 99 33 outlaw with 500HP's on ebay I threw a bid at it. Interior looks moderately faded for 270 hours. It's bigger than I need(wonder if it would fit in my 40ft garage? on the trailer of course
|
I thought there would be no difference in the X dimension despite the lower HP motors
|
we ran a 99 29 outlaw all summer and with the 385 mags and 24 bravos we are off the limiters at 65-67 gps speeds. IMO with 310's it might be a little under powerd.

that someone, or a dealer would order a raised X with mags or better, than to do so with base power. SST only gets you K-planes, external steering was usually installed standard on 385's and 496's and up. A friend had a 33 and he only had a 40 foot garage, and it fit. Don't overlook 33's, they have a ton of cockpit space, they're very similar performance wise to a 29, very nimble, and to me, they seem like a better balanced boat. |
I talked to the gentleman who has the 33 outlaw listed on ebay he does not know the history he traded it on an rv the never put it in the water. the price is fine but who knows, any of you guys up that way in michigan to take a look?
|
Did you see this 33?
http://www.offshoreonlyclassifieds.c...o26582-en.html I have a '98 29 with 7.4 MPI's (310 each) and Mirage 23's. It pops out of the hole pretty well and comes up on plane pretty quickly. It tops at 65MPH (gps'd). I would like more power but who wouldn't? I spoke with a factory Merc rep and he told me I could get 500HP naturally asperated out of these motors and not have to worry about cast crank. My next upgrade is going to be external steering. I still only have a little over 200 hours on the boat so not motor work for a while. When the time comes I may just look for some 496 HO take outs. |
If you can swing it GO for the 33. Cabin is the same but the cockpit room in unreal compared to the 29. Even room for a stripper pole!
|
Not sure about a 99 but in 97 there was a 7.4 LX that is rated at 330hp. It looks just like a mag.

I guess they want beat up boats instead of clean, gently used boats. because yours is very nice!!! |
In all seriousness, my 29 had 385 motors with -1" imcos & labbed 26p bravo 1s. It would run right at 70 mph on gps with a normal load of fat guys & 100 gallons of go-juice. I put Dana manifolds & Comp rollers on the motors & saw a best of 73-74 with me & vapors.
All 29's should have extension boxes & short drives with 380 kplanes. They are a different animal with the drives further back & up. If I were to go back to stock power I would leave the boxes on & use -2" shorties. The 29 is a really decent platform in my opinion, unless it has a single or anything under the 385hp 454mag mpi. Not that a lesser powered boat would not be considered, it just makes more sense to start with a more high performance oriented package right up front as most of us tend to always be looking for more power in the end. |
with labbed 26 4 blades all it would do was 70 -71 , mid range was great as was holeshot but topend took some work with trim and patience labbed 3 blades 25 pitch worked well at topend but coming on plane had seriou blowout only mods were k+n and cmi exhaust,I agree about drive height being to low thanks for the input

I guess I should have waited a couple years before I bought mine! |
I just let my 2000, w mags, go for even less!! If you want to sell you better make the deal irresistible. But had to make room for the Ciggie!!
|
Unfortunatly in todays economy people want/need to move these fast. I dont see the slide of price leveling off anytime soon.
If these 29 OL's you guys have for sale want to e-mail specs and pics to me it would be appreciated. [email protected] I am looking to spend no more than 45K and would prefer a 01 or newer. Also I would entertain thoughts of a 25OL. |

I agree with most of the statements above (60-65 mph) the 322 doin 70mph I'll doubt (I have a buddy with the same boat and power & I can out run him) I can say the 29 on the trailer will fit in a 40ft garage, mine does. My 29 didn't come with external steering, that will be my next upgrade. |
|
Alright someone take my super clean 25 off my hands so I can upgrade!!
