External Transducer for Depth Finder
 

After a summer of my depth finder not being reliable (because the yahoo before me had the trhu-hull puck replaced and SPLICED the wires!), I decided to add an externally mounted transducer. Followed the templates and instructions but my father in law drilled the mounting holes for the transducer bracket 3/16" too low, so now the actuall trasnducer sits that much lower in the water than what the template holes would have allowed for? In your opinion, will that make any difference? Humminbird says it may throw a rooster tail. Can't imagine that with twin engines/props and a platform back there in non-glass like waters... Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Mine is on the transom, but at the right height. The only problem is it may trip it up due to the presure on it. I thought they were slotted so you could adjust them?

yep, they are slotted and mine is as far up as it can go. Again, with the holes being drilled 3/16" lower than what the template said, the darn thing is sitting lower than what I wanted. Hope to god I don't have to drill new holes....

If you have to drill new holes, just fill the old ones with Marine Tex epoxy and wet sand flush. It will be fine.

The issue I see is that you are probably going to break of the transducer at some point. Those external ones are not really made to be used on a go fast type of boat. I know from personal experience after breaking off 3 of them.

hmmm. Havn't thought of the darn thing being ripped off the transom. Looking down the boat's hull a small portion of the transducer is directly behind the transom. Not like this thing is just hanging a foot below the hull and wide open exposed. I just can't see 3/16" of an inch creating a make/break situation. looking forward to testing the thing out!

dude go on ebay and buy yourself the eagle eye tramsom mount/thru hull sensor assy. it comes complete with gauges. then go to loews and buy the 50 min marine expoxy and follow the instructions for thru hull mounting. I paided $55 bucks for it last year and to this day it still brings tears to my eyes...worth every pennny. forget about all that transom mount BS it will bend up at some point and read wrong.
and I have a twin step hull! and it still reads acurate.
