#30 & 90 MPH Club

#30 in the history books

Well I set a goal many years back now to hit 30 poker runs in the same boat and I finally did it in Jacksonville this last Saturday. It took a little longer than planned with us not running last year but now I feel the need to increase the goal to 50.

The run was awesome and the rain was very refreshing! Nothing like running back 30 miles in pouring rain with six other boats at 70 MPH.

A special thanks to our good friends Jeff & Sonya "Team SteelOutlawed" for joining us on the event. I also Chris Driver my Salisbury store manager who came down with us and did a fantastic job of handling all the bow lines over the weekend.

The boat ran GREAT and I'm happy to report that even though we got off to a slow start in the back of the group that we did a lot more passing then being passed and we had a great time running with Vu in the 38 Donzi.

"See Vu Play"
38 Donzi w/ 525's

Vu is a great guy and he came up past me while we were cruising at 75 MPH. I pushed the trottles up even with him and he pushed his us some more. After the 2nd or 3rd round of that I saw that he had all there was and we opened her up. He came in right behind me to the Crab Shack and rafted off of us and the first words out of his mouth were "What does that Baja have in it?"

I laughed and we talked a while and he said he had never been passed by a Baja before!

Vu you are a super nice guy and I look forward to passing you again in the future my friend! Happy Boating

The Whipple Charged motors idles and ran like a swiss watch and I'm proud to announce that on Sunday we hit the river again with five people, 1/2 tank of fuel and flat water and we are now officially in the 90 MPH club based on the Livorsi GPS speedo.

I need to update the website now.

"Go Baja"

Hey Doc,

We were in the 42 Fountain that was running to the right of you in the rain. What a ride! It felt like I lost another inch on my receding hair line with the rain pelting. This was our first year for this run and we had a great time! I tried to find you Saturday night but there was so much going on...
We will definitely be back next year!

Keith

Sounds like a great time Dock. Glad Vu represented Baton Rouge well. Don't know him well but he seems like a great guy.

I really hate I did not get to finally meet you in person. I know we just missed each other in Miami year before last. Glad to hear that you had a good time and made the best of the weather.

I've been in several 42 Fountains and those windshields work pretty well. I wish we had one for that run!

We'll see you down there next year God willing.

It's always a good time in Jacksonville. Over the years we have taken seven other couples down and most of them have come back with their own boats the following year.

He did a great job and is a class act. He is funny and has a couple of nice boats. He told me about the 35 Donzi also.

We had a great time as always. Can't wait to go back again.

XT-Innovator 06-09-2009 11:11 AM

Dock,

That boat is good for 60 poker runs minimum! I think after you hit the 50 mark you will increase it anyway, just do it now?

Did the Latham filter fix the steering issue? Sounds like the boat is doing great.

Nope

Cool stories !!

My motors are on the way to Mark, and hopefully he can work his magic on mine and I can join you guys in the 90 mph club.

I am confident that he will get as much power as possible out of them and I will be able to enjoy my boat this year.

Last year was a joke and cost me alot of money.

I'll keep you posted.

Smitty

Thanks buddy

It is really a good feeling and you will love this. The wife thinks now we may be running too fast! LOL

She is used to sitting in the front and looking forward and she rode in the back seat all weekend long and there is more wind around the sidesa dn you are not seeing forward and it gives the impression of being even faster.

Beautiful evening on Hartwell

Took the Baja 272 out for a little 14 mile jaunt last evening. What a great evening for a run. Very little boat traffic and great water. Passed a 26' or 27' red and white Donzi like it was at idle speed just inside the Senica River leg of the lake. Wait, it was at idle speed. Just a great evening to be on the water.

Dock, do you have any 100 KPM Club stickers?

Dave

Hey Jason do we have any of these?

Dock, did you end up putting the whipple motors you had built in instead of selling them? I was wondering what ever happened with that whole deal,Smitty

Hey my friend how are things in paradise?

I feel like I know you well because Dick is always talking about you and most of it is good! LOL

Yes I did put the blower motors in and they are doing great. I have just over 10 hours on them now and they idle and work around the docks like the stock 500's did.

When are you going to have the 272 in triple digits?

kennyo 06-11-2009 08:23 AM

Do not say "TRiple Digits". Don't want that fool started up again!

When are you going to have the 272 in triple digits?

Glad to see you used the motors instead of selling them. I hope Dick get's his boat back together this decade:evilb: other wise he'll end up like all the other guys whose boat's haven't ran in years, every year their memory add's on another 5 mph of top speed:evilb::evilb:. Blowers,we didn't need no stinkin blowers back when my boat USED to run. I ran waaaay past hundred mph on 87 octane,at part throttle, only hitting on 5 cylinders, in the rain, going up-stream!!
As far as triple digits and my boat, when it ran 60's,then 70's,then in the 80's,then low 90's I always wanted to go faster. It will run in very high 90's now with my medium boost pulley (the 1057 hp one) and I have never tried the small one that made 1115 hp but after getting boat past 95 mph a couple of times and having it get so damn loose feeling then hook the bow hard when slowing down and bow steer out of control I lost all ambition to try to break the triple digits. I have tried alot of things, stellings box,Imco 2" shorty and they all made it go slower and handle worse. My biggest problem is with this much power and a bravo style drive I cant use any 5 blade props because as soon as I lower my slip it breaks something (like a billet prop shaft or vertical shaft) almost instantly so I'm going to work on some kind of rear ballast system and my center of gravity to get my handling back where I want it and just enjoy the boat up to the mid nineties,Smitty

Now that is funny!:evilb:

I'm just glad Dick is a better outdrive guy then an engine guy. When he does get her going he is going to give you a run for the money. We'll see who is faster Baja or Checkmate.

Well I am impressed at what you have accomplished. Having owned a 272 I would have expected you to run out of hull in the mid 80's. There is something to be said about prop slip for sure. It does cost you speed but on the flip side it saves you a lot of money. Be safe out there and keep Dick out of trouble.

Mark

Smitty 06-12-2009 08:22 AM

Steve

Have you had the bottom of your 272 blueprinted?? I'm sure that would make a big difference in the handling and maybe get you to 100 at 1057 hp.

Put more beer in the cooler and set it on the back seat. Or throw a couple of chunky women in there!

that sounds like a good idea, the 24 and 25 ols like both 3'' raised box or 2'' shorties, but both have pads too. hey Doc thats cool how far into the 90s did you hit, and gerry see you monday we need to get the 46 out this week for a shake down run cause the 4th will come up quick for block island.

Yes I was a little surprised by that commit also. She rode in a cat a few years back in Key West at 135 MPH and actually enjoyed it. The problem was that she was sitting in the back seat on this last poker run and could only see out the sides. It was a blurr she was not use to.

Let's see I probably should take credit for a good phone message since I have left you one or two but sorry we were out on the motorcycle all weekend and it was NOT me.

Clueless

Not far

The needle on the GPS speedo just touched it and I did not have the GPS chartplotter setup for a digital reading.

hey Doc its been what 3 seasons starting now that the boats been out of the water, mostly cause of the stolen parts and last year comp started to pay me, so I said to my wife I would not work or go out until I was off comp and near off the pills:eek:. pain is still there but I am getting off comp in two weeks and then between Biggest, Gerry, and Jon we should have the boat in the water 3 to 4 weeks. I figure the knee will take a year or more to get better I go to the gym a lot to build it up. Dean should have the motor ready for dyno sooooon:evilb:, already have some 4 and 5 blade props for the konrad. when I raced the boat before I didn't do any pain meds until after the race thats when my back was f%%k up.or if I went out for a ride and I never drank while driving a boat. but we need some good weather to get gerrys boat out for a test run since he had the motors out this past winter. keep us posted on your speeds glad you broke 90.

No I haven't had the bottom done. I have been told since only a little of the pad and 1/2 the tips of the tabs are touching at wot that hull blueprinting will do very little as it's not touching the water there when running at wot anyways,Smitty

Between actually working for a change & being on a 2 week vacation that resembled "National Lampoon's Vacation" complete with luggage on the roof of a minivan & a visit to the Grand Canyon, the Painted Desert & Petrified Forrest, Disneyland, White Sands & Carlsbad Caverns with Nicole's folks & my kid (5) & Nicole's niece (6).

No, because I'm really most like cousin Eddie. I did finally find beer at Disneyland $6.75 for a cup of beer & it wasn't even a good beer.
