How fast should my 272 run???

I have a 1994 Baja 272 equipped with a 330hp merc 454, bravo one drive and 21p mirage prop.

Trimmed significantly with almost no fuel, and by myself on glass water I get the speedo to show 56, handheld gps says 53/54, this is @4600rpm....

I posted in the general section, and Air Time seemed to think this boat was running pretty slow.

I am considering some power upgrades this winter. Is this running slow, or am I right around what it should run.

Thanks in advance!

I had a 260 with a 330 and it would only get about 55. So for a 272 I would say that is pretty close. You seamed to hang pretty good at St.Clair though.

isnt a 260 actually a 26ft boat? The 272 is only a 25ft boat with a 2' integrated platform?

Either way, right about the same speed.

The run was awesome, definitely was catching some good air.... I will be back next year. You coming around for the Raft off or cumberland?

I also would think that speed seems right. Can you turn a 23 prop?

I had a 1997 272 with the 330 LX MPI,,,, turned a 23 Mirage plus at over 60 MPH.

well 4600rpm is not enough, you should be up around 5000rpm, that will be maybe 2 more mph......what kind of power upgrades??? it takes probally 10-15hp to see 1-2mph

i see 62 gps on my 99 252 with the 454 mag mpi that is at 385hp bone stock, my prop has been worked to see 5000rpm have a mirage plus 23p on

IIRC the max rpm on the 330 hp 7.4 was 4600. Speed sounds about right, maybe a couple of mph slow.

The 260 has the integrated swim platform like your 272 does.

I would imagine running in some nice chop instead of glass water would get you up a couple mph as well.

It doesnt really. I run in St. Clair which is usually a 1-2ft chop lake. Some clear days, and some very rough days. But it doesnt matter. 53/54 GPS is the best I have ever seen.
