We had to show some kind of increase because we had to charge more money for the 502 option. I saw many test sheets that had higher speeds for the 454 MPI engine. Our Merc rep even confirmed that many 454 MPI'S made more than the rated HP, and the 502's were hard pressed to get their rating. I am sure some will argue this opinion, but I just thought it might be interesting?

I wouldn't doubt it. When my 29 was stock it was just a touch, just a tiny-touch slower than another 29 with 502's. I could turn labbed 26p Bravo 1's to 5100 & we put those same props on a different 502 equipped 29 & it couldn't spin them to 5000 & I could out run him.
I attributed it to the -1" IMCO drives I had on the 29 vs. the other 2 that had stock Bravos.

this is kind of off topic but how much slower is a 25 foot outlaw with a 454 vs a 496. I been reading about it and people say do not get a 454 in a 25 foot baja but the 454's price vs a 496 is so much cheaper

I would say to stay away from any 454 CI - 7.4 rated at 300 or 310 propshaft HP. That would include the Carbed 7.4 L, and the 7.4 MPI options. Not to say they are not good engines, and they will definately outlast higher output versions, but resale will be harder to get. IMO, the 454 Mag MPI is a snotty motor with a high lift cam, and pushes the 25ol about 62 mph GPS with the 23 Mirage prop. A 496 Mag should be about 60-61, and the 496 HO should be 64-65?

I have 7.4mpi 310s in my '99 OL. Same in my '99 302 I sold a few years back. Saw 63MPH in the 302, 65mph in the OL. The 310s have been wonderful engines for me. Never had an issue with them. People think they're weak. I've got no problem saving $10K on a boat and slowing down 2 or 3 MPH. Makes no difference when I'm anchored drinking beer!

Are you turning 23 three blades, or 24 B1's? My 2000 29ol had the 310's and ran 62-63 with 24's. Paired-up in a 29, or 302 they work well, but just one pushing a boat as big as the 25ol, is a little different. I never liked it when they replaced the 310 workhorse, with the 6.2 L MX. What do you think would outlast the other, the 7.4 rated for 4600 RPM, or the 6.2 rated at 5100 RPM?

Well the 6.2L is a small block and the 7.4L is a Big Block, but I can say that 6.2L is a stought engine if properly taken care of. The 7.4L was a great power plant as well unless you wanted to upgrade HP then you had to go through the complete motor...It's sorta like the 496Mag/HO great power plant if left stock as soon as you start messing with it you might as well get out your wallet or pull it and buy a 454Mag or 502Mag so you can affordably upgrade the engine.

wakeboarder.. 454 mag vs 496 is no difference.. other than the fact that it has close cooling and is new. my 454 mag runs great.. best of 65 with and 62-63 loaded all day.. but we cruise at 50mph!

496 mag will run about the same.. HO will get you 65 all day and if your lucky can spin a 24B1 to close to 70mph like a friend down in houma, la! freak motor!

yea im only willing to spend 20-30k....preferably 20-25k and im looking to get atleast a 1999 and newer. Looks like I might have to go with the 454 if I want something a bit newer.

You guys are all bashing the 454 but is 10k worth the extra 3 mph or is everything increased such as HP and stuff. As long as the boat can get on plane and run atleast 50 I think im happy. Speed = More Gas =/
