272 problem with J Hooking
I just installed a 540 when running above 60+ when backing off the gas fast boat will jerk too the left very bad any have this problem or solution?

Sounds like the king pins and gimble ring is worn out. When letting off the throttle the drive kicks back because its no longer tight.

You've got some loose/ worn out parts back there and that is a bad combo to have with that much power and speed.

i checked every thing when motor was out but even at lower speed when i pull throttal back hooks to the right. Thanks for response.

move the drive side to side, if the wheel doesnt move right away there is something worn

Did you happen to upgrade to a 4 blade Bravo 1 propeller, and you used to have a stock 23" Mirage Plus? I have experienced that when you back-off hard on a 4 blade single engine setup, it feels like you just deployed a peracute, compared to a 3 blade????
Think of it in simple terms, when you suddenly stop a right-handed prop, the lowest blade below the driveshaft is now a "rudder" that kicks the rear of the boat to the left! XT |
Replace the gimbal pins & add a single ram hydraulic steering system atthe very least so you don't hurt yourself.
You will get hurt too if you don't fix it correctly. I'm pretty far from the safety patrol guy but I've been in your exact situation with my old 226es. I added a single ram add on steering system from WPM. It helped tremendously & is the least you should do after replacing the worn parts. |
I had the prop 3 blade recupped and yes i am going to go to hydrolic i checked the other out drives they move side to side as mine but i think to much about 45 deg.

You can re-torque the 2 nuts on the top pin & take some play out, but stuff is probably too far gone.

Just a crazy out there thought if you don't have worn parts. Does you engine spin down very fast after backing off due to really high compression? The reason I ask is potentially your power steering pump is no longer spinning fast enough to counter the torque. Kind of like one of the earlier threads mentioned about the blades are now acting like a rudder. I guess the big test for this is:
1. If it happens without a big jerk on the wheel then worn parts. 2. If your wheel is fighting back really hard and you can correct with steering input that seems hard then maybe P/S pump pressure issue. Most likely worn parts though and the external add-on system is pretty easy to install and works nicely. |
Thanks found the gimbal ring bad just ordered new thanks for info.
