just an FYI, but a free tip for getting a lot of boom out of your subs is to actually point the sub facing down firing at the floor of your boat...i built two separate sealed boxes for them and i held mine about 1.5" off the floor in my old 24 Outlaw and they HAMMERED. i installed (2) cheap $100 10's and had people with big $$ systems wondering how my boat sounded so much better than theirs. you just lose so much sound firing them forward into the cockpit from in the frame of the back seat where i see the majority of them mounted.

I would say that most of your gain was from the boxes, more so than the fact they pointed down. You may have gotten lucky and made a quazi bandpass by doing that, and gained a few extra db over just pointing them into the cockpit. But you could have just as easily made them sound worse.

Most people go the free air route so they don't have to deal with the building of a box. MOST free airs don't hit as hard as a boxed sub would. I know some will argue that, but free air subs are a compromise to begin with.

I have 3 Rockford Fosgate P1's in my boat. Lowest price sub they make. Anyone that has been in my boat will tell you it hits HARD. But I built a whole custom back seat for my boat.

X2. I used to install stereos, downfiring is the way to go for subs. Worth the extra effort.
