My 95 272 with 502Mag EFI with labbed 24p Bravo would do 70 on GPS with 2 adults in it and it still does 70 with 475hrs on it...I sold it to a guy in CA and he loves the boat..."IT'S ALL IN THE SETUP" but anything over 70 in a 272 you better have more than 415hp to achieve it!

What gear ratio is your drive? 25p Mirage IMO isn't right prop for a 272 with 502.

Way wrong prop, not getting enough rpms. I have asked and asked a certain dealer and then found a guy on the river the other day who confirmed everything I was told... A 3 blade mirage plus labbed is the best you can do and that is what I have. Just last weekend in cooler weather I was just short of the rev limiter and can on any day run right at 5k loaded or unloaded. I ran into a guy who was running a four blade and asked him all about... bottom line is he knows and has experienced slower top end but is good with that as he and his family tube and ski more, so he wanted more low end and control and got it with 4 blade. But I have found the 23 mirage plus labbed to be the best of both worlds.. makes a big differnce on both ends over a stock 23. On my trim gage I am just over the half mark and to prevent porpois I have tabs down 2 to 3 bars and she runs real strong... any more trim and I am spinning the prop like smoking the tires.
My 2 cents.

Question

seriously then, i must have motor trouble . 1.5-1 drive. i run trim a hair under half way , any more and starts to slip, tabs up. i have a 23 mirage plus too. with that prop i only pickup 200 rpm and same speed. i cruise at 35 to 40 and i like the lower rpm at cruise speed thats why i use the 25. very rare i do w.o.t. motor sounds healthy. i read a lot of them only do 62, very rare one does 65. i assumed mine was normal. got a small lifter tick with 340 hours on it. i will have to do a compression check today. i will get back to ya. thanks

Guess I had one of the good 272's it liked the 4 blade..I never used the 3 blade kept it as a spare prop. I used 22p for tubes and skiers and labbed 24p by Bblades for normal use. 70 on gps 68 loaded down..

Question

did a compression test and got 150 pounds on every hole but 1 got 135. seems pretty heathy. bottom of boat is slick as a whistle. maybe need cap wires plugs? 10 mph between your boat and mine seems like a big difference. i would be very happy with 68. do you think labbed prop would account for that much difference? thanks

Labbing a prop will only get you 200-250rpm's weight and where it is determines how the boat rides...Baja's like bowlift and you need a prop to give it that which is what I did when I labbed my prop...Bblades is VERY knowledgeable regarding what Baja's need, but you'll need to get him real #'s where you run normally as far as weight and gear.

Your 502 should be at WOT spinning 5000rpm's anything less your robbing it of speed.

I bought a brand new 272 w/502 mpi in 2000, I tried every kind of prop I could find and the boat ran 62 mph gps w/4 people,I had it at almost 65 a few times with cool crisp air and a labbed 23 3 blade with no passengers and 10 gallons of gas. I have heard about 272's that run 65 loaded and that run 68, 70 mph but I have never seen one in person and I have clocked quite a few of them side by side with my boat. I'm not saying anyones a liar or that it hasn't happened but you will need more power or some other hull mods to go any faster imho. By the way, my 272 currently runs 99 mph with 1050 hp and when I don't run the blower I run 74-75 mph with 650 gross hp but I do have a xr style drive and nose cone which will slow down a boat (it was also dynoed with no accessorys and no water pump and at the more generous 60 degree sae factor) ,Smitty
