Still Kickin'-- checkin' in with results

Well, if I had not thought after I built the motor and ran it on the dyno that some people are full of s***, now I now I really do, especially the guy at the Baja factory who told me they ran mid to upper 70's in a 97 24 OUtlaw with a HP500(470horse). He must have been coming off a heroin bender, because he was off by about 10 mph, just like alot of people claiming big numbers.

Now that that is out of the way...hahhaha.....Final numbers, 98 24 OUtlaw, 509ci making 520 HP and 575 ft/lbs/tq. Boat jumped to 69 with a MP 23 3 blade, but walked around like a drunk hooker on 3 for 1 night. Threw a few different props on and the fastest and best handling is a Rev 4 23. 72 GPS 5150 RPM and really stable. Walks a little bit up top, but realy feels pretty good. Amazing what another 15 mph will do to the feel of a boat!! It was 3 mph slower and spun about 5600 rpm with a 22 bravo1 4blade. It's a big tq motor and I guess it likes to grunt. I may get the prop labbed and try to get a few more revs out of it, and maybe a few more mph, becasue at 5200 rpm it still makes something like 540ft/lbs/tq, so I'd like to try and use that up if possible, maybe up to 5300 or max 5400, and put a 56 or 5700 chip in the MSD box (may only come in even numbers, not sure about that). Now I just need to make 'er live long.....

I'll tell you one thing though, that f-er is a rocket ship in the mid range, really quick.........looks like I will be surprising some folks on the mighty Ohio river this year....HeHeHe....looking forward to seeing how fast all the "80 mph boats" really are. My bet is I torch a few of them.....frickin' liars.

Just checking in fellas, haven't been around much but hopefully thigns will arrainge themselves a little better so I can jump in a bit more. Take 'er sloooowww. A4

merlin540 05-17-2002 03:47 PM

i tried to tell you but you just wouldnt listen BLOWER BLOWER BLOWER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ITS NEVER FAST ENOUGH IS IT???????????????/:p

Allan4 05-17-2002 04:37 PM

Well, put it this way....next time I'll save myself about 4K and put a blower on it. I'm stubborn I guess........:p Oh yeah, I could pop some 8.75 pistons in this motor and slap some forced air on top and have a perty nice setupHAHAHHAAHA. Actually, sounds like a pretty good idea....for next year......maybe.....or the new boat....whenever that is......;)

WETTE VETTE 05-17-2002 05:07 PM

Sounds like it is running pretty good. There are a few people still using old pitot speedos and they think they are really moving. I know I was pretty depressed the first time a buddy radared me. I just put a Nordskog GPS speedo in and it is sweet. I see what Merlin is doing, he wants to keep his outdrive repair service growing so he is pushing blowers.:D Hey Merlin my drive shifts great since you put the new clutch in.

Your speed sounds about right with the hp #s. A lot of those 80 mph boat speeds you hear about are while on the trailer. :D :D

CigDaze 05-18-2002 09:59 AM

Good for you Allan!
Glad to hear the motor project went well and you posted some good numbers. Nice to see you back. Happy Boating!

WetteVette, HAHAHA, about two minutes into the conversation with merlin about how the new motor is spinning, he says "looks like you boys oughtta be breakin' some drives this year HAAAAHAAAWUHAAAA..." so, yup, he is using subliminal and reverse pyschology type marketing on us. Just another attempt of mine to keep the economy rolling:D Even if the speedos are off, some guys still claim horses*** numbers, just like 250sport said, on the trailer. One thing is for sure, my 72mph will answer alot of questions about some of these guys running around claiming 80, that's for sure. If ya can't be the fastest, may as well spoil everyone else's day:D :D :D

Hey Daze, yeah, it's running pretty good. Still need to finish up some odds and ends, but all in all I'm pretty pleased. If nothing else, it sounds sweet! I let one of my buddies drive it and give me a blow by while I sat on 29 Fever's boat and at that moment right there, the whole thing became worth the hassle and $$!!!!

SeeeeYaaaaa hommies......A4

WHATCHATALKINBOUT Allan.. LOL

MY 232 hits 58-60 on gps with 300 hp carbed. I was looking to get into the 450hp range and hopefully low 70 to mid 70's... Hmmmm,,,, I'm not so sure now,, 70 seems more do-able..

Allan4 05-23-2002 07:40 PM

Yeah, think conservative on your speed numbers. I know the 24 Outlaw hull design is old and slow, but you still may have problems with that 70 #. Ask around. Good luck.

merlin540 05-23-2002 11:45 PM

glad to help wet vette. hey allan i have to support this habit somehow. i have a guy from the board coming from chicago tomorrow for the merlin touch on his drive. so i guess the word is out. i turn your bravo around quick and treat you fair e/mail or call 513-477-2780 if you need service :D

thisistank 05-27-2002 01:53 PM

Allan, right on man!! Glad to hear things are progressing nicely.
I'm STILL waiting for my boat to get out of the shop!! last I heard the block was out getting bored out the heads were getting milled and the JE pistons had just been made and sent off. So hopefully I will be good to go here shortly. A couple of questions for you.....

You said the boat likes to walk alot when you get more speed under it. I take it you have the twin ram stock tabs on it? I've always figured my boat will walk when I get up into those speeds and higher but I thought if I put the tabs down and play around with them it would keep the boat a little more stable. Have you played with this??

Also, you are running a stock bravo?? No probs yet?:D I'm keeping my fingers crossed man! I had them go through my drive put fresh bearings in and cleaned up the gears, cut them back slightly....I'm praying I don't start blowing drives....that is, before I can sell the thing!;)

A friend of ours hit 82 with 1.36 gears a 454 and headers and a Pro-Charger in a 24 outlaw. That is GPS! We almost bought it, but it was JST 2SLOW!!

Allan4 06-01-2002 05:10 PM

HAHAHA......like the last little bit there 2fst.:D The boat is really comfy with the 4 blade rev 4 24p at WOT(about 71-72 GPS denpending on load, weather, etc). Add 10 mph to my boat and it would be pretty wild, problem becomes rough water and outdrives. These boats like to get air rather easily and you put too much power through it and bounce in and out of the water all day with 600ft/lbs/tq plus all day, and you will have Merlin on speed dial (by the way, he will hook you up fast and fair if you need outdrive service.....he is a boat/car mechanic). I'd think that from a realiability stand point you would save some $$ down the road going 82 in something bigger ans less apt to get so much air. Sounds fun though......now you are making me want to go faster a$$hole:D :D

Tank....what's happ-n-n. Yeah, she's up and running. I actually would have hit 73 plus last weekend. Weather was right. 3 guys in boat (650lbs) and a little over a 1/4 tank plus gear and we hit a consistent 71-71.5 ish. So i figure I may have seen 73-74. This motor is not nearly as wieght sensative as the old one. I'm sure you will find the same thing, especially with bigger numbers than me.

The boat was a little hairy with a 25p Mirage plus. Walked a ton. Put the 4 blade on and the revs dropped. speed went up. hole shot is simple ( I can hit a plae without going much over 2K rpm) and it handles really well, tabs all the way up, drive titled pretty hard, but not as much trim needed as with the old motor.

I think the boat likes about level tabs with the hual(three lights lit up on the indicatro--Yes, stock dual ram Bennets) and lots of trim (Future gimbal work for Merlin:D ) I was running about 68-69 with the same load as mentioned above, through some choppy stuff and it floated right over top of it, but it still will catch as edge or two along the way. More later, Gotta run...A4

Yo Allan the tool tosser!
Whats up man?

Glad to see it is coming together for you
But question with the prop setup,
Dude you should be theroetically able to spin like a 25-28 p on that sucker!

23 is in a guess too small for that kind of power
Kurt (biggus) turned 25's on stock 330's and that was from the factory in his 280

Im going to test out the 25's on mine (engine HP around 450 each)

23 I would think is just way too small with that kind of power unless your boat is loaded with gear, fuel, people, stuff, food, beers, sodas, ect
Maybe add a mineute amount of cup to a 3 blade 25 for a touch more bow lift and get her really out of the water

Somehting to think about, You sticking with quicksilver and standard bravo props or are you messing with Hydro's and cleavers?
Jason

Allan4 06-06-2002 07:21 PM

J-L, my man, I read some other posts that made it sound like you were about ready to walk out into traffic!! Hang in there, it's only a boat........Yeah the prop decisions were by luck to be honest. I had planned on running a 25-27 MP. HOwever, with the handling improvements and the RPM's (about 5200) and the speed (I can probably hit 74ish GPSby myself down wind) I don't really think I need to look too much further. It just relly handles well. Check out my other thread.

I have a buddy who has a 28p Rev 4. Same prop as the one I am currently running, just 5 #'s smaller. I am running a 23 Rev 4. I want to try that one out, maybe pick up a bigger propr for long cruising days, drop the revs even more and see what speed numbers I can pull. I use Lubrimatic gear lube and stock Bravo1. If I'm smart it will live. make sure you get a hold of me with any questions about pulling the motors from your beast. I only check in about 1 time per week, LAter Have fun ya f-ing freak HAHAHAHAHAH......take 'er sloooowwwwww. No cleaver or Bravo props by the way, tried a 22 Bravo, not good at all. Slower by 3 mph and pulled 56-5700 RPM. Rev 4 looks like the prop to beat for my set up....
