Default 85 Baja 220 Sport

Hey all,
This is my first post here. We just purchsed a 85 220 sport with an Alpha drive and a 454. What is the best prop to run on this boat and should I run trim tabs on it? Thanks...Brad

Hmmm, I think the Alpha drive with the 330 had a different gear ratio than the standard bravo. If it has the 1.5 ratio I would say a 21p mirage, however I have a friend with that setup and he uses 19p mirage. What does it have on it now and what RPM and GPS speed do you have at WOT? If the boat is in top condition it should run about 56 MPH.

Oh, welcome to the site !!!

My dad had one of those. It had the 454 Magnum motor (365hp) & the alpha drive. It had a 19p Mirage on it. I think the boat would have dan better with a 21 Mirage or Mirage Plus. I think the boat ran in the almost 70mph range.
The boat had no tabs on it & I remember it rode pretty decent for a 22' boat. Of course we came out of a Taylor SS jet boat so anything with a vee bottom was an improvement.

Thanks for the replies! It has a 21p on it now but it isn't a Mirage prop. I haven't been able to take it out yet but will see how it does. The guy I bought it from said it would run in the low to mid 60's.
This is all new to me on the IO's as I am an ex outboard drag boat racer...so these are a new learning curve for me. The boat is in near mint condition and it originally had a 5.7 in it but the previous owner swapped it out for the 7.4, 454 magnum......Brad.

It may do 60 with the 365 HP mag engine

I looked at a 1987 220 sport a few years back, it was powered with a 1989 300HP V8 outboard. Owner claimed 70+ but I did not go far enough to sea trial it.... Does that sound about right?

Thanks Jeff.....thats about what I was figuring on the 60 mph. Which will be fine for a fun lake boat. I have to keep reminding myself that Im not racing any more....lol.
Fountain35 with this hull and the V8 Johnson/Evinrude OB, you probably would see around the 70 mph range. My last lake boat was a 20' Baker Mod VP tunnel (heavy hull) with a slightly hopped up Mercury 2.4 EFI and I would get 84 on gps out of it.......Brad
