Talk to me about 24 outlaws
What speed am I looking at for a factory one with a 454/B1?
Are there specific known issues I should pay attention to when I go look at the boat, or is it just all the normal used boat stuff? I've heard people say that the 24 is a hull to stay away from because they chine walk badly if you start getting good power in them. Is there any truth to this? |
When i was looking at them for a friend i was told the engine hatch was known to hold water. Besides rot that can put extra strain on your lift motor.

This is the rear of the boat http://traviscrossett.com/24outlawrear.jpg From what I can tell from that picture the drive seems to be in decent shape. Any idea what drive shower that is? |
billet cap very good upgrade on the drive mirage prop better for speed. 454 should do 60 on gps
|
Looks like a Eddie Marine drive shower.
|
How feasible is it to replace the swim platform with a tubular one? Are the mounting locations the same or would I need to fill old holes and drill new ones? How much are tubular platforms?

+1 on the mirage prop, think most run the 23p with the 454 |
I have a 95 outlaw SST, 454EFI/B1, its been a great boat, any questions, just PM me
I have seen 60+ MPH, the boat is stock other than Stainless Marine exhaust [with mufflers] spinning a 13 7/8 X 23P 3 blade stainless prop Michael |

First thing I'd do is have someone inspect it for rot before I did anything. 90's boats are known for it. |

I love my 240 sport....same hull as the 24 outlaw..I run lake of the ozarks at 60 in 3-4 footers..I have alot of stuff done to mine though..it was rotten so the stringers were replaced, added 2 more stringers so it has 4 now, and 2 more bulk heads were added two, along with the top cap fiberglassed to the bottom core to make the boat ridged as can be, and all foam core, no more wood in the boat, and the transom was replaced and outdrive raised 3 inches. I have a 502 with some work done, but I run a 26 bravo 1 prop and run over 70..but I love the boat..its big enought to take cruiser wakes, and still easy to trailer..its gunna be hard to find a boat thats a 24 footer that would run and ride like mine..but ya it does chinewalk alittle bit..but you gotta drive through it, and it runs smooth..
|
The speed will depend on what 454 you are talking about. The 330 should hit 56 and the Mag should hit about 60.

The rebuild sounds very familiar to what I had to do on mine, except I didn't go with coosa or glass the deck to the hull. Added extra stringers, bulkheads and cabin seats tho :D The 502 will be next... And jeffswav hit the nail on the head as far as speed. |
I also concur that the 24 Outlaw/early 240 Sport (87-89) are great all-around boats. Nice deep V, high freeboard and decent weight make it a pretty good small boat. I run mine out on Lake Erie and have yet to run into any water that made me nervous. Granted, I'm not out there when it is Apache water either...
BUT you have to make sure you give them a good look-see prior to buying. After tearing mine apart and seeing the original construction/rot carnage, I will be a lot more diligent in inspecting any boat I buy in the future. I would be highly skeptical that any of them from the late 80's/early 90's are rot free, at least any that got any normal use. |
there is a difference between the 240 sport and the 24 outlaw---the sport has a different dash completely and a glass winsheild and a wooden swin platform...the bottom half hull is slightly different and the weight is greater than the 24 Outlaw
i reached 72mph on gps w a 468ci w about 450-480hp...tried a 3 blade prop and boat felt like a turd...back to a 4 blade |
24 outlaw... chine walk is there on mine too but smoothes out at speed w the keifenhalfler K-planes ...you learn to ease into the throttle smoothly and its not soo bad.
hard to beat thise boat for the $$ like they said you can trailer it yet it runs through the rough stuff like a champ safely!!! |
i guess im confused on chine walk issues or missed something - you guys are referring to BIG HP right? Because there is 0 chine walk with stock power.
the only thing ive ever encountered was overheating/vapor locking. they make an additional mech fuel pump to add though to fix it. mine was still running hot, the previous owner had grenaded an impellar and did nothing but replace the old....all the rubber shards were restricting flow to the oil and fuel coolers. after figuring this out and flushing it thoroughly - problem solved. do you have one in particular you are looking at? or just shopping 24OL's in general? 98 models made huge cuddy improvements! |
oh yeah, replacing the swim platform is pricey - ive wanted to do it to mine for years but im just cant come off the $1500+ for the tubular type. my cheap solution was to order new purple and white Marble pattern foam that matches the boat. it was a pain scraping the old foam off and getting it prepped but well worth the time and effort.

im running 700 hp in my 24 ol with a raised x and shorty lower i see a little chine walk in the mid to upper 70s but if you hold it steady it will flaten out around 80

Agreed on the rot! If it hasn't had repair work done than it will most likely need some.

What were the cuddy improvements that they made in 98? |

Where else besides the transom and the stringers in the engine bay? You really think it's a given that the boat will need repair work? That would make me stay away from it.

in 98 they switched to having two vinyl couches in the cuddy facing each other as opposed to the single cloth seat cushions to sit on...its basically the same as the 25OL have now, i believe in 98 they came with the tubular swim platform too (i think, im just going from memory)

ya my boat is trimedups old boat..well with my motor in it now..I do believe that the hull design is exactly the same as the new outlaw..and ya there is a difference with the windshield and dash..although I have seen 24 sports with the same dash as my buddys 92 outlaw..and my 88 240 sport..I put a tubular swim platform on mine..bought it for 400 bucks used off a wrecked 29 outlaw..fits perfect..

ok...I have a few..ummm Ill say hickups with this boat.. 1.He says its a 500hp..not a 502 or 454..well a hp500 is a 502 block..they just call it a hp500 cause of the horsepower it makes, and it doesnt even make 500 horse..I think they made like 470 or something like that..and it doesnt cost 10,000 to make 500 horse.. 2. He did spend alot of money at a sticker shop, cause that wasnt a factory baja sceme, that I know of, cause it has the old baja stickers on the wind screen. 3. Is it me or are those exhaust tips extreemly low mounted on the transom..and wheres the swim platfrom?? Didnt mean to come off like sounding like a dick..just my thoughts..sorry if I offended anyone.. It is a clean looking boat though..wish I had external steering.. |

I'm having trouble finding pictures of the entire cuddy. This one is a 94 and from what you can see through the door it looks like it has 2 seats facing each other.

yes it has two seat cushions facing each other, that is the older look still covered in cloth, however i just looked and maybe im mistaken - maybe it was they made 98 24'OL and 98 25'OL's....here is a 1998 25outlaw with the upgraded seating which i thought came in the 24' as well. (2nd pic)

I see what you're saying, I just thought that was due to the larger cabin in the longer boats. I'll see this weekend I guess. I do plan on sleeping on the boat a fair bit in the summer time.
|
the 25 is bigger and is heavyer then 24. you need a lot more power to get the 25 up to speed , but the 25 rides nicer and a lot more money .if you get a 25 for $15000 you are doing great
|
The one i'm going to look at is a 1995 24OL for $15k
