Problems w 302 transom?

I was just taking off the crappy Bennett twin ram sport tabs over the w/e to replace with nice 280s K planes when I noticed a bit of water seeping out of one of the lag bolt holes at the bottom after I unscrewed it... I pulled off the cover for the 'thru hull fitting' where they just drilled a damn hole in the transom and shoved a hydraulic line thru it only to notice one of the two lines had not been properly sealed, I would assume from the factory. Lots of black slimy stuff when I stuck my finger in the hole after I pulled the line out. I'm basically figuring I'm screwed, but just wanted to check with the people who know better than I before I pour gasoline on it and have a very expensive barbecue... Anybody know a nifty way to check for water damage in the transom without drilling a bunch of holes?

Thanks in advance.

Moisture meter. Some can tell just by rapping on the transom and listening for a change in tone. Can you stick a pick in the hole and tell how soft the wood is around the hole?

If you have water running out the bolt holes you have ALOT of water in your transom.

If you see black stuff on your finger you're screwed. My worst nightmare.

Dry it out with a propane torch. Don't get it too hot, you're insurance company will have to buy it.

I would drag it to LakeAway Boat Repair in Ohio. I'll be picking mine up there in 2 weeks. He's highly recommended and is very experienced with Baja's.
