Default Power steering

Looking at a 2001 272, and found a brochure for the 2001 model. I noticed they list power steering as a standard option. How does this differ from a after market hydraulic steering system? I have never seen anything about power steering on a 272 prior to 2001 is this a 2001 only standard option or am I way off track.

Thanks!

Brochure can be seen at

Full hydraulic steering will have external rams mounted on the transom directly to the drives and lines all the way to the steering wheel. It eliminates any play in both the steering wheel and the drives. People have different opinions on when it is absolutely necessary. Probably a good idea on anything running 70+.

and also just because it has the ram doesnt mean it is full hydraulic it could just be hydraulic assist like i am having done to mine you need to look for either cables or hoses running up to the helm
