Thinking about buying baja
I have been kickin around and looking at some baja's online bc my fiance hates the amount of room in the cockpit and cabin of my 29 fountain. She really wants a cruiser but I am trying to get her to meet me in the middle and consider a baja since they have much more space in both. I am looking at 32-35 ft range since this seems about the size to get generator and a/c and bathroom (a must for her). I don't know a whole lot about the differences iin the models - outlaw, sst, boss....Would like to hear you guys insight in the differences and what engine packages are best and which have problems. I have looked at the 34' boss , around the 1999 - 2004 range. Thoughts?

We have had a number of Bajas,(5) started small and worked our way up the ladder. In my opinion, they are a good value, great styling and overall a great boat,
They have issues in rattling, and some models had "better ideas" when they were built, that had to be retrofitted by the dealer or in some cases Baja themselves to fix the issue. But basically that was 3 years ago at the very least, so if it hasn't broke by now.... You should have no problem as long as you/the previous owner take/took care of it. Models, there is a number, from family to performance, you just need to look at what "style" you like and go from there. SST,Boss, etc, were just packages that included different guages, graphics, interiors, again, you just need to see what you li9ke and go from there. In the classifieds there is NUMEROUS Bajas to choose from to start looking, Have fun looking! |
I use to own a 29 Fever. Went to Baja when I had kids and haven't looked back. Went to a 302, a 29 OL now have a '99 342 Boss with genset, AC, heat, vacuflush, full galley the whole nine yards. Nice to have all the ammenities of a cruiser and still have 70 MPH.
You won't find a genset in an Outlaw. Need to look to the performance series (342 38 Special). 342 is much easier to move around than the 38. 38 is a much bigger boat, taller and wider on top of 4' longer. Be happy to answer any questions you may have in your search. Tim |

I have seen several engine setups, 454's, 496mags, 496 HO's, 502's, and 500 EFI which is most reliable and best overall setup? Have seen that some of the 342's have more cockpit space than others, like the bilge is bigger in some than others, does this depend on the year? or just the way it was ordered from factory? Thanks for the help! |

In 2001 Baja moved the back seat quite a bit aft extending the cockpit and shrinking the bilge. The cockpits were configured several different ways. U shaped seating, straight bench, with or without ice maker and sink, etc. |

The 500s usually need top ends redone by 300 hours or so. |
