I have a 2000 Baja 272 that has ran 99mph, not really a 275 but close, has more in it but I have lost my desire to break 100 with this boat. Has ran into the mid 90's hundreds of times. Has a procharged 540 big block that made 1057 on 92 octane, made 1115 on 80/20 mix of pump gas and 110 octane, Smitty

AMEN brother! I'm with you 100% I'm so tired of chasing a mph here & and spending tens of thousands of dollars to get a number.
Your boat is the fastest 272 I know of. All hail the king of fast 272's.
One more quick observation. It is more fun reading about someone making a boat fast than it actually is having a boat that goes fast.
I chased 95MPH for 4 years. got 94.6mph on the GPS once. Called it quits.
Next time, I'll buy the keys to something that's already done rather than building it myself.

I had a little O/B yrs ago that I was trying to bust a 100 in. Can't tell you how many trips to the ramp I made convinced I was there. Would run 96, 98,99 but not 100.
Was about done and was making one last attempt at it before selling the rig and moving on to something else.
Came back in from the 10th or 11th pass and showed my crew the GPS. 99.9!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Finally got a 101 but what a PIA!

Remember the Baja that ran @ LOTO several yrs ago?? I think it was a smaller Outlaw but thinking he got into the one teens???

There are much faster Baja's then mine but I might have the fastest 272/275 in existence. Dan Vining who used to have a supercharged 24 foot hammer or similar ran into the teens at Hardy pond ( didn't personally see it or the GPS) but he did run 107 at Shootout on offical radar, Smitty

I think I could bolt my smallest blower pulley and 32 pitch prop on and go break 100 but I really lost my nerve for it after I put the 2" shorty on my 272 and almost flipped my boat as it tried to swap ends at 95 mph. Even though I got rid of my shorty and put my standard length drive on which worked the best, I keep my top speed right around 94-95 because it does feel pretty spooky above there. As far as breaking parts, I did just shear off a vertical shaft in my lower and destroyed the case, fairly new gears and all the bearings but I rarely break down on the water and I perform alot of preventative maintenance on my drives, I am STILL running my original upper case that I had Max Worx put a steel tower in back in 2002 or so, Smitty

take away from your accomplishments. Goes w/o saying that going up in size/weight amplifies the challenges ten fold. I think the one you're referring to is the same I was thinking of too.
On the boat swapping ends, I've spent a lot of time playing w/fast O/B's where we're spoiled at being able to change X dimension's in min's. The fast guys run w/the prop shaft 2" up but at that height, if ANYTHING happens it can easily be catastrophic.
I've done it many times and never liked it.

I'm not saying a shorty won't work for what others are doing, I have heard they do miracles on 24 and 25 ft outlaws, just in my case my boat has always ran fast when trimmed real high or at least fairly high. I had boat trimmed what would be normal for mine, prop blew out and bow hooked which tried to make boat spin out, this happened at about 96-98 mph, boat went sideways, I turned into it, throttled up, went sideways the other way, back and forth until had boat under control, i almost ripped my arms out of there sockets trying to stay in the boat but did stay in, put the scare in me a little. Tried it with a 1" spacer then found it a new home on someone elses boat!
The boat rode and drove like crap too on top of blowing out, would break prop loose too easy/cavitate, there was nothing positive about it in my case. Might have been a different story with a 5 blade BUT the last time I tried one of them I instantly sheared off a billet prop shaft so it was really out of the question. What is your prop c/l, mine is 7.5" but boat rides pretty high out of the water when it gets into the 90's so my theory is a shorty becomes too short for my application, Smitty

bajabob 08-29-2011 11:47 PM

thanks .i have to look at what other 24baja did and how they made out. i am spending a lot of $$$$just to go a few mph ?? if it dont work then i got to sale it and it will be a waste of time:drink:

I went to a -2 shortie on my 1998 baja 27 boss and love it, never looked back, all positives in my case. Boat runs faster, handles better and no blow out, running a stock 30 bravo.

I started hitting 100 at the end of last season with some 31 p5x kilo labbed props from Hydromotive over 800 per side, Guess what I just ordered larger pulleys Im freshening up the this winter and turning them way down .Im going to run 5lbs boost and 2lbs more fuel pressure .I rather clean soot off the transom then pull the heads .I have run in high 90,s for 6 or7 years .I cant tell the difference between low 90s and 100 unless Im next to someone. theres always going to be someone bigger and faster I youst to say boatings like nascar but you get 4 days to pit .I wish I had all the over night freight in the bank .I did have a lot of fun and still do ,my priorities are changing .Ill have to read this next spring because I could change my mind again LOL

Ebay Ed 09-19-2011 07:44 PM

crayola where you been docking this year havent seen you at wilson's

Twin O/B Sonic 09-19-2011 07:47 PM

If you're having to run a ton of up trim, you will be fighting it. At that angle the drive is trying to force the stern into oscillation and if you have any slop in the drive/steering it will exaggerate it.
When you counter steer it also exaggerates it.
More rake (angle of blades leaning away from motor) will have same effect as up trim w/o moving the drive and eliminate the other negatives.

Custom ground Cam motion hyd roller from Bob Madera/Marine kinetics. Has around 248/256 at .050 and .647 lift if I recall correctly, I can spin motor to 6200 with 13/14 psi of boost (when blower belts NOT shredding). Smitty

It was an H2X with a big belt-driven aircleaner. I want to say it went 109mph.

Didn't that thing run like 1400 hp or so? I seem to recall that number mentioned together with an all time best of 111-112? I'll do much for excitement, but 110 mph in an H2X ain't one of them.

your so right, I should of learned after my chit was stolen, from the 24ol. then I get talked into my dream motor blown gellner 572 1114hp on pump gas more on race, less on 89 haha detuned. but started the SABER 28 hull. after 2 years got it in the water. it porpoises like hell= leaps out of the water. so we lowered the drive height from 3'' , 4'' 4 3/4'' which = 4'' to 5 3/4'' cause of the ex box. and still porpoised drive all in. had to change tabs, was going to anyway. from 280s to 380s. so we put 500lbs in the cabin and it helped a little. with the 4''=5'' propshaft height. I had a new gas tank made which on the singles they put behind the back seat going across. now I have to put one in the floor like there twin motors are. I shooting for a 100. there was a twin 509 that did 104 to 110. I think about putting it in the ol but, would need to move the tank I think. but hit 83.2 gps at 6000rpm in the baja. 80 at 5000 with the saber and 380s buried 3/4'' the way down:grinser010: and trimed in. so 95 to a 100 is do able when I get the CG straightened out. whats funny is the 24ol has hook with the strakes last 4'' and the saber has rocker last 4''.back to speeds how fast has the ol24s gone, I know theres one in penn that went 96 or so.
