Help with tool to get dash off??

My speedo doesn't work. I'm hoping to blow some compressed air through the line from the back of the guage but I can't find the right tool to get the dash off. The fasteners are torx shaped but not quite. Take a look at your baja dash and you'll see what I mean. Anybody find on of these tools? Where did you buy it?

I know what you mean, the screw has a hex(torx) style head, but there us a little nipple for lack of a better term in the middle, requiring a similar tool with a hole in it.

I found my set of these bits in Lowe's.

i think they are called security torx bits. i found a set of 5 with varied bit sizes at Sears...cost $6 I think :)

Thanks for the quick comeback Daze, I'll be sure to visit the local Lowe's real soon.

Why build a new 'consumer-proof' tool that now sits on a shelf at a hardware store. Duh:p

They are called tamper proof torx heads. I bought my set
through snap on tools.

Pretty tight security, huh?
Ya right...what's the point, they're readily available from just about any tool supplier. ;) :D

Those things really suck when you don't have the tool. I replaced mine with SS phillips screws.

I couldn't find them at Lowes, they actually had a really poor selection of torx stuff. Onto Home Depot....

Gottahaveit,
You make a good point. I have the tool, but it's not one of the ones I keep on the boat. I should reconsider that...It would suck to limp home from 10 miles away because the damn speedo tube came off......

Yo, before you go to all the trouble of pulling the dash out, pull the speedo tube off the outdrive and gently blow a little air into the line to see if the tube or the pickup is clogged. Speedo needle should jump a little with light air pressure. Do not blast away, because you don't want to jam something into the back of the speedo guage. This may save you pulling the dash panel, all though it ain't that big a deal anyway.......
