Do all the normal engine maintenance. Put new plugs in it and make sure they're gapped correctly. Make sure the timing is right. Check the points on the distributor, etc. A compression test would probably be a good idea too.

4000 is about what I used to get with the 23p Mirage Plus's on my 302 with the same engines.

Bad news from the repair shop pulled plugs and water came out of the cylinders! Said exhaust does not have flappers as well. I just purchased this boat! So much for the clean bill of health from the pre purchase inspection. Waiting for further diagnosis!

Most likely the wet joint gaskets on the exhaust, which could have broke down over the winter.

How much water in the oil? That engine, even though it has cast internals, might be ok seeing that it is relatively low compression, depending how long it was ran that way.

If it is the exhaust fix the leak and run it, you really don't have much to lose on the gamble, the stock internals are inexpensive.

In the previous owners defense, he may not have known. And there is a big difference between an inspection and a survey.

Just inspected the boat at the shop, water in all the cylinders and has a low end bearing noise when run with the drive off. Shop says boat needs a complete rebuild. Said looks like it will cost 6500+ dollars ! Any advice about speaking with the previous owner? I know if I sold the boat I would make this right. Mostly upset about our raised expectations that we would be boating all next week. Am I better off trying to sell this boat with a blown motor, rebuilding or having it repowered with a new mercruiser 496? Anyone have any ideas what it should cost to rebuild?

I'd say just get a crate GM motor.
