Should I go with the 502 since this is the case?
Early 01' 496's had forged cranks, later in 01' they went to cast. If your considering a Procharger down the road go with the 502, the 496 procharger kit does not fit between the stringers of the 25OL.

I read this in a car craft or hot rod magazine a while ago. The 496 is at best a bastardized version of the big block chevy family, virtually nothing will interchange with other big blocks, and i think they have metric bolts. Anyone with more knowledge want to chime in. If speed and horsepower are what you are after... go with the 502. If stock is what you want..go with the 496. The sky is the limit if you want to hop up the 502 and yes you can get a stroker cranck and a bore job and get 540 cubes. I did exactly that, with a 250 supercharger as well. Hope this helps.

Cheers
James
