Wow, Just noticed...
56-hundred-some-odd posts in the Baja Forum. That's like double the second most visited owner's forum. We've got a lot going on in here!
Just saying "Hey!" :) :D ;) |
I noticed that too. To much time on my hands or what, but I always check the total # of posts before I log in and go to Baja section.
|
Great group of guys and gals on the Baja forum.
We will be at 6000 soon. Thanks everyone. Mark |
Hey Mark (DOCK HOLIDAY),
Did you wire your vhf radio to one of the aux switches? And what type of antena did you use? Frank |
Frank,
The antenna I used is the stainless Shakespear 5241R on the stainless steel adjustable mount. It is on the starboard side of the boat within easy reach. Yes, I did use the accessory switch for the radio. There are two on my boat that seemed to be open and not working anything. That worked out very nice. I will post a picture tonight that shows it better. Mark |
Definately a great group!:D
Mark: and that's precisely what they're there for. People just can't go very long w/o adding gadgets and gizmos!:D |
I already used up my extra switches. We just can't leave things alone can we.:D
|
Mark,
Thanks that is what I had in mind. Have the same antena and mount. Just hate the fact of drilling those mounting bolts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! for the base. Frank. |
Frank,
Believe me, I know how you feel. This is the second one I have done and it gets easier. Remember- Measure twice drill once. The key thing is to make sure what is behind the deck before you drill. You don't want to mess up any electrical wiring, hydraulic lines, cables, etc. Also want plenty of clearence for bolt heads. Make sure you use split tip drill bits. They have a small point that sticks out. These will not walk on you and work great on fiberglass. Good luck Mark |
Baja342,
I've got a raymarine VHF on my boat... 4' fiberglass Shakespeare Galaxy 5400-XT antenna. I almost bought the metal one, but I liked the fiberglass antenna better... My antenna is mounted on the port side of my boat, and the radio under the helm. I didn't use a switch, just the knob on the radio. I usually take it out when I put the boat away anyway. |
HEY-- If there was a owners forum for PWC's -they would be at 9000 by now :D :D :D
|
Tinker that's funny! I was just gonig to mention the little "friendly" competition we (baja) had with the scarab guys a while back....You guys remember that??? It got ugly there for a little....But in the end Baja prevailed over the eval Scarab!!;) :D :D :D
|
He may have to now that Scarab went out of business!!
;) :D :D |
Good stuff guys! LOL...:D
Tank, I remember it well...I can't believe most of us didn't get booted at the time;) But it was some of the funniest stuff ever conjured up around here...Good fun, with a few little jabs! |
Mama done told me "Ain't got notin nice to say keep yo mouth shut". I checked the Scarab board, dosent seem to be too many people there.

Have a good one yourself!!!!'
:D :D |
29 Scarab,
But seriously, when are you going to step up to a 33 or 36 Outlaw???:D :D :D :D Tank |
thisistank,
I think the question is when are you going to step and buy a real boat!!! :D :D Besides, I want to step up and NOT down!!! (just bustin' your chops!) :p :p |
Well concidering I can't buy a new Scarab anymore you must not be talking about them;) :D
You must be talking about a bigger Baja for myself! Any Baja would be a step up for you bro!;) :D ;) :D (Back at cha!):D :D :D Tank |
Dude!
I tell you after what Wellcraft has pulled. Me as well as some of the other scarab owners are already talking about swapping. Personally myself, I'm going for a Top Gun or an Active thunder!! I've already owned a Baja and I wasn't the happiest with it. Of course this was back in 93. I did ride in a friend of mine 36 baja with 500's. I have to admit it was a nice ride and totally different than the one I owned previously, but it wasn't enough to make me go back to them. And just for the record on this board!! I busted a 29 outlaws ASS and also a 33 outlaws ASS with my scarab!!! (My whipple kinda snuck up on them!!!)) :D :p :D :p :D |
29 Scarab
Come to me. I'll see you in the 4-6 waves. Not bashing your scarab but I'll challenge anyone who can beat the combination of wave handling, speed, safety reliability and price. Take in consideration the WHOLE package. |
bajalion,
Not trying to bust your chop, but I think that 32 you have would have a little problem problems in 6's running hard. A friend of mine had a 32 with 525's and had a problem running real hard in anything over 5's. The day I beat the 33 we were in 2 1/2 to 4's. I'm sure you have a rock solid combo from the sound of it. But I would be careful what you wish for challenging anyone!! You might have some takers that would leave you on the porch with the pups!!!!!:D :D :D Baja Daze hasn't warned you about me has he!!LOL |
Generally when I get challenged on Lake Erie I've got my wife and three young kids on board. I usually give it a little burst if the waves aren't too bad.
Yes I know there plenty of boats that are faster and handle bigger waves, But for 66K and can cruise the harbors quiet as any crusier? There was a guy that raced JAWs who is in the same harbor. They got on him so bad on noise he sold the Skater (46' I think) race boat and the pleasure Ocean Express 48' and bought a searay after a legal battle with the state. Bring a loud boat my way, I'll be running, they'll have a $500 fine. |
29Scarab,
How fast does that lead weight go, anyway? ;) |
bajlion,
I went and checked your website out! Sweet boat! I have no doubts it will haul ASS! I've heard about big water in Erie!! Thank god we don't have noise restrictions where I boat or the old team Yahoo boat that runs in our lake would be in real trouble!! Definitely a good price!! Now for whoever that dloftis or leftnut: You might as well keep that lil' hammer in the kiddie pool!!! You mess with the bull!! You get the horns! And as for the comment lead sled!! Bring your ASS!!! I was in the mood for an appetizer before I take on a real offshore boat!! :D :p :D :p |

Now now... Did I say mine was faster? NO! Just asked how fast yours was.
BTW: I can bet you that Brad Perry's little hammer could hand you your ass, so long as the water was flat enough to keep the drive wet. Have you seen that thing? GEEZ! lol... I don't mean any harm, just playin'. But seriously, how fast does it run and with what power? |
dloftis
Just ribbin' ya!! As far as how fast scarab runs. To be quite honest I'm still playing with props. I did have a few tricks done to the engine before the whipple went on. The motor was completely gone through. I had zero gap piston rings, Crane HP gold roller rockers. I'm still dialing it in, but right now as it sits, according to my GPS speedo I'm running in the upper 70's. I think if I got the prop right I could be in the 80's. With work sending me all over the U.S. its hard to spend a large amount of quality time dialiong it in!! I know it ROCKS though!!! :D :D |
Sounds fun...
With my 310hp 7.4MPI, I'm nailing the rev limiter on a 23p Mirage Plus through 1.5:1 gears... and getting 64.0 GPS. I'm working on getting that a bit closer to 70, and I'll be happy ;) FWIW, I drove around a twin engine 29' Outlaw on Galveston bay during a poker run... and I know he was gettin' on it. |
Guys,
I love the Cigarette Top Guns. You just don't know how much. I had told the wife I was going to be the first guy on Lake Norman with one. We started looking at used ones, the new ones were just too expensive. I found three that I really liked in the 1994 model year range that had Bravo drives, one with 540's and the other two with 502's that had GREAT paint jobs and in good condition. The prices were right I thought in the low 100's. The problem is that big ass boat did not have anything in the cuddy that my little 272 did not have. The wife and I overnight a lot, and we were ready for a little luxury. In talking with the guys in the know, the Cigs are built to take a pounding day in and day out in big waves. They do not put the tv's, microwaves, A/C etc in them because they told want it to fall out. I see there point, but for the way we use a boat it would not have served us well. There is only one "Top Gun", man I love them, but I consider my 36 Outlaw to be the next best thing in my opinion. dloftis, Don't let those Scarab boys talk no trash to you now.:D |
And you want to race a 34 SCARAB with a 32 BAHA in the rough stuff. That would be fun. I will help you pick up your pieces. Lets see a 32 BAHA is 32 ft long--- A 34 SCARAB is almost 36 ft long and is about 2000 lbs heavier. HUMMMMM --- you do the math. And it was fun getting a rise out of you guys way back when.
|
Tinker,
The name of my old 1986 32 was "tinkerstoy", my close friends sometimes call me Tink. Does a 34 scarab include the swim platform? My 32 weight is 7200 (brochure weight) I think the 34 is about 500 lbs heavier, maybe the swim platform? http://free.hotboat.net/tests/docs/W..._34_Scarab.htm If you come down to put-in-bay look me up. (yes, I did the math) |
Hey Doc,
I hear what your saying. We don't do much sleeping in the boat though and we DO run in some very big water on a regular basis so I'll be looking for an early to mid 90's cafe or gun as soon as I sell my boat. As I've stated in other posts, the Outlaw really has KILLER lines and is simalar looking to a gun (IMHO). If I could afford the 40 Outlaw I would most likely just get one of those, but the price on a 40 Outlaw is a bit much! Considering you can pick up a timeless Gun for a lot less money. Just one thing on Scarab's....I love them....I worked for the local Scarab dealer when I was 12! Been in love with them ever since. My good friend has a 97 38 w/ twin teague 800's, custom extension boxes and big shaft #3's. Boat is a rocket! The bottom was blueprinted by the late Eddie Merantz. I've been on almost all of the major offshore brand boats and his scarab is the Best handling boat I've ever been on period! Could be the bottom, the extension boxes, or the set up but it is one AWSOME boat! And for sale...140K |
BAJALION---
The 34 doesn't include the swim platform and the literature I have says 8500 lbs and I am probably closer to 9000 with the arch and radar and water heater and extra batteries for the 1500 watt inverter and all the other goodies that I have on board. That is why I only do 77 mph GPS with 1200 HP on tap. Since I put the 2 inch shorties on the boat it flies very flat and I can really get it on in the rough stuff and it NEVER gets squirlley. My 18 FT GLASTRON CARLSON was named TINKERTOY. I originally tried to goin using the name TINKERER but one of the forums I am a member of wouldn't let me have that name so I used TINKERBOATER for all of them. Hey -- Thanks for the neat link - I hadn't read that before. I was at Put-In-Bay last year. Great place The local SCARAB dealer was having a poker run the day I showed up. He said I was too late. Didn't even know about it. Lake earie getts preatty snotty. Couldn't believe that you could run aground in the middle of the lake. |
Tink,
You mean the local poker run in Port Clintion, Coastal Marine? I had a blast there this year. Lots of interst in my Baja since we were doing about 75 in 3-5 (I have standard graphics). On the flat run we topped out at 84 in 1-2 chop. I had another experienced go-fast with me. He just kept saying I can't believe how well this tracks. I even took my hand off and just worked the throttles a few times. Only got wet 2 times and took air once, my fault. If you come to the west end of Lake Erie best to bring a chart or better yet someone experienced. Lots of harzards. I dinged my first prop this year which is pretty good for 12 years on this lake. If you get a chance fo the the "Casino" at Kellys Island. All go-fasts in the front row and is usually a spot. Dennis (Ex-Owner of JAWS) owns the place. The sign says "preformance boats over 30 ft only" or something like that. They try to cater to go-fasts of all sizes, sometimes with a shoe horn. Maybe see ya next year and share some riding. |

Just reminding 29 scarab about my pal Brad Perry,
|
Liquid,
I'm thinking about repowering my hammer. I'm going to put twin 377 Scorpions in it (yeah, I know it'll be tight) and put whipple's on them... and hook 'em up to pulse drives out back. What do you think? lol |
Just buy Perry's motor it is all new 925 horse and 1rst class and I'm pretty sure he would sell it, We can't keep him out of his pontoon boat, just kidding Brad:D
