I think id be happy with a few simple upgrades for a 3-5 mph gain. 23p prop and carb cam intake

Pretty sure you bought this from my friend....I was in this boat when it ran 58 on gps with 3 guys(730 lbs) and a full tank of fuel(60 gallons).A little less weight and a 23p and you should get in the 60's. Personally I wouldn't crack the motor open unless it was broken..not in the hopes of 3 or 4 mph.

Don't forget exhaust if your doing carb, cam, intake. Waste of time if your not, even with the exhaust included do not expect 3-5MPH. 2-3 MAYBE. Then you'll get into it and tear out the engine, build it and all the parts you just bought will need to be replaced with better. Here's some advice, sell your good running engine and pick-up a 502 mag drop in. 415 HP and it will be turnkey. Easy to do, fuel injected benefits, and you get a nice jump in horsepower.

I plan to upgrade the boat as funds allow . Just ordered a trim tab indicator. Id love to pick up a built 468 or 502 for the boat. Seems alot of people have trouble with the 496s.

Whats the difference in the automotive 496/502 and the marine versions ?

Being a 1997, you have the 240 sport with molded in swim platform and I think 21* deadrise. Correct???? The older 240 became the 24 Outlaw.

Which 454 do you have???? Is it a 7.4 or a 454EFI mag???

The 7.4 will run about 60-61. A guy on our river had one with a 7.4 when I had my 24 Outlaw with a 454mag/365hp. We were pretty much dead even at 61mph.
I think a 23 Mirage Plus will help with top speed, but you need exact rpms and gps speed first.

Griff i believe mine is just a standard carbd 454 i dont see anything about magnum on it. Yes my boat has the molded in swim platform on the back. Im not crazy about how it makes the back of the boat look but it is very functional

The 97 240 sport is the 226 hull. not the 24 OL hull. This boat will run 55-58 mph with a 454 330 hp. You'll need 450 hp to achieve the speeds you want. It will easily run into the 70's with 450hp though. If you have a carb 330hp you can get there without to much cost. Exhaust, flat tappet cam, performance dual plane intake, and carb upgrade and your about there. Roller rockers free up a few hp too. I can give you specifics for a reliable build with the motor and that hull if you are interested.
