25' Outlaw, Speed seem correct?
I have a 1999 Baja outlaw 25' that I have been battle issues from neglect of previous owner for the last 3 seasons... I think I finally have it in line now, I think.
my question is about the prop and the speed. Through research I found that it does come with the 23P mirage Plus. When I got the boat it had a 21P on it (partly because previous owner DF) with the boat full on fuel and 4 adults, it will come out of the water fairly slow and using the trim tabs to get it up quicker. If I trim the hell out of it I can get it to about 4800 rpm and 60mph... the 21P will get out of the water a lot quicker but im at rev limiter and not the mph.... Is it worth changing props to something besides the 23P Plus or is this about what I get for the boat style and power? All stock motor and drive |
What motor? with a 454 4800 at 60 sounds about right (4 adults and full tank is alot of weight), with the 502 you should be closer to 65mph with a 23p

What motor? 23p and only 60 mph I would say you have a 454 mag? I would say you should go a little faster in the right conditions with less fuel and less people. I have a 502 in mine with a 23p mirage plus. I think the prop has been worked a little by the previous owner though. I got 67 once at about 4900 rpms with 2 people and 1/2 tank.

sorry yes it is a 454 mag mpi.
is it normal to have to use the trim tabs to help get on plane? they are the stock tabs... I had considered going to some 280s or similar and adding a low boost Procharger setup... |
Tuck drive and lower tabs to get on plane, ease into the rpm find the sweet spot don't just throw the stick on the dash.

IMO having to use tabs to plane a 25 OL with a 21 pitch prop...sounds like you're down on power. With all things "right" the boat will run faster and plane easier than what you posted above. You're looking for a prop with bow lift for the 25, the rest comes with seat time. Good Luck.

The motor is all fresh and new parts from a good shop Youngs Performance. |
OK then I misread your original post. If you've got fresh Eddie Young power then I'd say the prop is junk. There has been lots of chatter on this board over the years about this. I don't care to be attacked by "the experts."...but at my own risk... The prop can make a huge difference, up to 7-8 MPH WFO. Our boats a similar (if not exact running surface), mine and three other 272's that run the same "secret grind" wheel from Bblades (I helped develop) run north of 68 MPH with stock 502 mags and Gil style manifolds etc...
The prop has to carry the bow to reduce the wetted surface in order to get the last several ticks on the speedo. |

My ideal situation would be to holeshot better than it does, and turn as much MPH as possible when needed... I know holeshot sacrifices MPH and vise versa... Im not so sure the prop is "junk" per say, but if I can gain 7-8 mph and not take the Mississippi river to get on plane.... |
