I see crazier stuff from those in 1/2 tons from being overburdened. I'm towing 9500 lbs. with an (stock) '08 F350 4X4 supercab, never need 4x4 at the ramp nor to pull the boat off a saturated weeded lot, it's that capable. I much rather have a plethora of reserve than always be strung out.
In comparison when I first purchased the boat I had an '06 F-250 Gasser 2wd all stock as well. Forget getting it in and out of the storage lot when dry, wheel hop in reverse and forward. I can't imagine the nightmare when wet and never even attempted it at the ramp. At that point I knew I at least needed 4wd.
I'm not saying a 3/4 ton will or won't be necessary, but don't be surprised if it is.
