Default 272 Quest for speed

I hope you don't mind an A.T. guy in here but I have a Baja question. My best friend and boating partner has a 99 272 and wants to go faster. Looking for best bang for the buck on a 502 and prop advice to go with it. He has given me a $5000 limit.
Thanks in advance.

Well, since you are inquiring about a BAJA for a friend, then you are allowed, however, we do make note of this post and you are limited to a total of five posts for your friend, then your friend needs to register with OSO and start his own posting. Therefore you have four posts left.

I would agree with Obnox...whipple is the only way to go for the bang of the buck for speed. I have a 1996 272 25th anniversary Baja. Have not done performance upgrades because if I'm going to spend that kind of money for a whipple I would rather get a bigger boat. Plus, I see myself spending more than $5,000 if I go whipple because I would add some more things with it.

Well here is post number two. I should have said at the start that he did not want a blower. I quess he is asking about exhaust, spark and mapping. What might he gain?
Three to go

I put Gil headers on mine and picked up a couple MPH,, get the prop dialed in. Some have had luck with the " smart charge " kit for a couple MPH.

Your still only looking at MAYBE 5 mph in all that for 5k.

He should be in the low 60's now right?

Why wouldn't he whipple? Seems to be the best advise.... How much speed do you generally pickup with a 272 and a whipple?
