30 Outlaw on cover of Powerboat

Wow! What are you guys with the HO's running in? Must be perfect 1 to 2 footers with absolutely ideal conditions. My 29 has 496 mags (not HO) and the BEST i have ever run is 72.4 (gps)I could never imagine that 100 h.p difference could make a 7 mph difference. Now that I think of it my buddy has a 29 with 500's and he can barely hit 80. What are you running for props 29 Outlaw? I thought I was doing good with my Labbed props but you at 79/80, ....Now that is impressive. I was always told that 100h.p was good for 3-5 mph at best. I guess I was misinformed.

Need-the-Speed
My boat is running labbed 27”-3 blades and I have no problem turning between 5100/5200rpm. That works out to theoretical speed of 87 – 88.5mph. Throw in a 10% slip and I’m right at my reported speeds of 79mph. My reported speeds are always with just myself onboard. Frankly, I have no choice but to run by myself since I have no mate to run with.
You have a 2002 with the raised “X”. I’ve always questioned the wisdom of Baja raising the “X” on 29 Outlaws beginning in 2002. The point of raising it is to gain speed. But in the case of the 29 Outlaw, the raised “X” forces you to run 4 blade props. So you gain speed with the raised “X” then instantly loose it because you can’t run 3 blade props. I experimented with a 26”-4 blades last year. The results were pathetic. I was able to turn those 26’s up to 5000rpm but only saw speeds in the low 70’s (slower than my stock 25”-3 blades).
I must mention that earlier this year I put full synthetic oil in the engines. I gained 1mph by doing so (previous best was 78.3 – synthetic best 79.3)

I have seen 76.4 in the 29 I have 4 sale at 5,000 with 27" Mirage (non plus), alot could also have to do with temp, humidity, and elevation, my speeds were in 80 degree weather, 2 on board low fuel at 450'

We have an '02 29 Outlaw with 496 Mags and in two brief top end runs we only hit 70 (69.9 on GPS). The tachs were showing 4,600. Full tank and two aboard. We're interested in knowing where you 29's are setting your drives and tabs to get the best top end. We have the factory supplied 4 blade Mirage props (not sure about diameter or pitch). Next year we'd try synthetic oil and would consider labbed props if we could gain another 4 mph.
Does anyone have experience in changes to the electronic controls on these engines to produce more power?
Funny thing is a guy in our shed has a 35 Nordic with 496 HO's and he's claiming 78 mph.
