OSO Baja Get Together
Guys & Gals,
I feel that most of you are family having talked with you on a daily basis almost for years. Would love to meet everyone in person and see all the nice boats together. We need to figure out how we can all get together with the boats for a big Baja rally. The biggest challenge would be location. Where is the country is close enough to make it equal for everyone to tow? I have no problem towing 6-8 hours one way, but would not like to go longer if possible. It seems that most everyone is from central to eastern US. Norman is very nice, but there are NO hotels on the lake. Hartwell is the same, no hotels and very few resturants. Not sure about Virgina, Kentucky and Ohio? The coastal areas like Charleston have a lot to offer for the whole family and dockage and hotels are NO PROBLEM. If we could find a spot that worked for everyone and pick a date at least four months in advance that everyone could plan for I think we could pull this off. Anyone up for something like this? Make some suggestions. |
melinda and i always make two long trips a year. depending were we end up sounds like fun.
|
I know I don't talk on here all that much but I check the posts at leasts 4-5 times per week... a little less in the winter ( I don't like to talk about boating when i can't go and do it ....I miss my baja ):. Anyway I would love to take a weekend and do something like that. I only have one problem No Trailer for my 302. I suppose I could rent or borrow one. Sounds great.
|
We touched on this a little last year. I think this is a great idea. I would definetly love to meet everyone that we converse with on a daily basis. I coast is fine with me and accomodations are much better in the coastal regions. I will give all the help I can in trying to make something like this work. Let's get the ball rolling and pick a date.

How about LOTO??
|
im in.
I wouldnt want to drive over 6-8 hrs either. we should do a poll and see where everyones at that wants in, then pick a place. im in austin texas. |
Hey Fat,
There is no doubt that LOTO would be the place. I will not rule it out, but it is a LONG drive from here. I estimate 18 to 20 hours. So I would have to make a vacation out fo it. Have always wanted to go there! |
I'm posting over here since.....last friday I put a deposit on a 270 Baja and will soon be the proud owner of a Baja!!
|
I'm in but I can't drive to LOTO. I'm only good for about a 5 hour drive - up, down, left, or right.
LOTO is about 18 hours. |
Great idea, Dock. It would definately be nice to meet and run with everyone here. I'd have to rent(or buy-heavens NO! :D ) a trailer but with enough notice I could pull it off.
|
Hey Dock you always forget about the Bates Motel on Norman. We need to set eveyone up there, they would love it.
|
Count me in! Now just tell me where, if its to far, then it is. Hmmm...I'll go eight hours to hang out w/ya Doc from Columbus, OH. I think the interest is here, we just need to start picking destinations now.
|
You have Dale Hollow, Lake Cumberland, Kentucky Lake, Tennessee River, and so on.
|
Originally posted by GottaHaveIt I know that the Baja poker run on Lake Travis is a big one, and some folks tow from as far as 7 hours away. Takes me 4 hours from Houston. |
Originally posted by BajaRunner If we do it in austin, everyone can stay at my house for free and park their boats at my land. AND ill by beer. :D Austin would be a 24-28 hour drive for us guys in the Mid Atlantic. If we left on Friday, we'd get there on Monday. |
Cumberland would be a kick ass choice. Nice clean SALT free water!:D
|
I second the LOTO. Middle of the country and has alot of lodging.
|
Consider that fact that 99.9% of the Baja owners on OSO live east of Oklahoma City, the center point now becomes somewhere in Kentucky.
If you wanted to do something at LOTO, I think it would just be midwest guys boating with midwest guys (just like a normal day). Towing 20+ hours from the East Coast is way is too much IMO. |
why dont we all tow em to the closest ocean, then we dont mind driving 20 hours or so (by boat) to meet up :D :D :D
|
I third the LOTO vote.
For those of you who havent been there, the best comparison I can make is, it's like going to Vegas. You see stuff there that will blow your mind :D I don't know anyplace else inland that could really compare with it jt |
Great idea !!!:) :) loto is a fabulous place and is a 14 hour tow for me. I've done it a few times and it is worth a weeks worth of time. Lake cumberland sounds like a tamer version but could be a compromise. From people i've talked to the marina's are few and far between and watering holes are fewer and farther between.
|
How about the emerald coast poker run in destin in august, that gives plenty of time and it is actually "offshore" don't be scared. the water is beutifull and that run will be awesome [url]http://www.flpowerboat.com/new/
|
on second thought austin will be cool for the april baja shootout, and baja will be there with either a 30 or the factory 40, expecting over 100 baja's and its a lot sooner and has carlos ands charlies to party at, on the lake. very clear water

Hey, LOTO is only about 1800 miles from here. Let's see, my truck gets about 10 miles to the gallon so 3600 mile round trip at 10 MPG at about $1.75/gallon, that's about $650 for gas and that's not counting gas for the boat!
How about the texas coast? Or you could all come out here to the Pacific! :D :D |
Texoma or Lake Travis. They are both party lakes with tons of places to stay on the water. Baja poker run on Travis is alot of fun. Its around April time frame.:D
|
We may have to just have 2 seperate get togethers so everyone doesn't have to go so far, The texas coast also has a baja run around april at clear lake put on buy marine max, the factory boat is ussally thare to, but we are having one at Travis regardless so if your close enough come on it will be a blast, and we will break baja runners pocketbook:p ;) :D it is mid april, if your going book at least one month in advance at Lakeway, it probably will fill up
should be some travis pics on this page www.ltpa.net |
I'm afraid Liquid is right.
Too many members of the Baja family across this great nation. If we broke this down to maybe three seperate events and had a contest oon who got the most to show up that would be fun! I think I will start making some plans for those close and post them and see who can come. |
I think we should be able to get at least 20-25 on the east coast. There is at least 5 or 6 in the Carolina Power Boat club.
|
count me in,i will drink runners beer any day....april at travis is always a blast.i'll be there for sure...
|
If we're having three seperate ones then the west coast event is going to have to be Havasu! :D
Okay, who's interested? |
I'd love to go but the ole Expedition won't pull far...Maybe we'll take TeamBaja's party machine!
|
Dock,
How far of a tow from Columbus, OH based on the location you are putting together? |
Doc,
While I do not have a trailer or tow vehicle for my 38, I can probably put something together if it broken up and we had to come to Norman or something in that range. Even Cumberland might work for us. Put me on the list to keep informed as to what the plans are. Keith |
i,m located in ontario, canada, across from detroit michigan. if planning an 8 hour run, that would be lake cumberland ky for me going south. would definitely be intrested in putting my new tow vehicle to use.....

I think the Charleston, SC area would be a happy medium for the FL, GA, TN, SC, NC, VA, and MD people. Not just because it's in my state. There is plenty of lodging, the restuarants are great, and the atmoshere is great also. A three day weekend would be a good event.
|
We would love to check out Lake Cumberland. A bunch of BAJA's would make it that much better. Can anyone describe the lake and places to go?
|
Myself and 4 other bajas go to cumberland 2 or 3 times a year. Have a great time stay at state dock $30 a night for covered slip 15 uncovered , jamestown marina has a resturant BIG party is always at the 76 falls gets a little rough in open water for our 272 but I love it. racing at the dam in late evening. We would proubly be in for a good time!!!
|
jafo272, Can you give some more info as I would like to plan a trip to lake cumberland. I'm not familiar with area at all and need names of towns nearby etc. Are there places to beach a boat, party areas on the lake, etc.etc.???
