Notched 30 ol........

I just heard from a reliable little birdie that Baja has a project underway to notch the transom of a 30ol to see how it performs. I can't wait to see it but I am curious if Baja is going to start cutting boats apart and adding notches and Steps?

Thoughts.......

Hey cig did after they said they wheren't

Re: Notched 30 ol........

Notches wouldn't be anything new for Baja. My 25OL had a notched transom.

Re: Notched 30 ol........

Yeah I know that but why would they add it now after they have been developing this boat for at least 4-5 years. I would love them to build a couple of stepped boats ( I know they built 2 42's with steps) to quiet the critics about baja's being slow. You can put a 29 fountain inside a 29 ol.

Re: Notched 30 ol........

Good question...I guess they had to build a few without notches to see what, if any, difference it makes.

The 42's with steps were built as such so that they could pace the APBA races back in 2000-2002. Racers were pissed that the pace boat was too slow.

We don't need no stinkin' steps...let the critics critique. :D :D

Re: Notched 30 ol........

They are actually going to notch the boat and then keep the notched piece, and re-glass it so that it can be put back in place the same day with some pre-tapped holes so they can check the performance the same day with the same conditions ect. I thought that was pretty ingenious. I am still waiting on the 35 ol.

That's pretty cool. I wonder what the results will be. Keep us informed if you find out.

The notch helps when you run a high X. It keeps more water on the prop. I have the 97 Baja poker run 32. It has the full notched transom. It also had the hull blueprinted by Baja. Email me if you want to see some pics. [email protected]

We sure don't.

How's that new rig treating you? Any updated photos?

Re: Notched 30 ol........

There are no notched 30's being developed or tested. Also, they only built one 42 with steps. The only boat they ever stepped.

Re: Notched 30 ol........

It would be hard to believe if this was infact true. Baja does make a nice "Family" boat. It was my impression that this was the companies goal. Putting notches or steps in the hull can only jeopordize that goal. I was alway under the impression that Baja would sacrafice the mph for the handling and safety factor.

Baja is one of the most diversified boat builders available today. It wouldn't suprise me if they did stepp a hull or two. If for no other reason just to dabble and see where it goes. They do make a nice family boat but I've seen many families with very young children operating everthing from Nor-Tecs to Cigarettes. So its really all in what a buyer wants and fits the budget. Baja will continue to diversify and experiment......

Just my .02

I'll agree with diversity. The steps, perhaps, slim chance imo. Baja is corporately owned. They are content making entry level boats. Remember, when you think performance, what do you think?....Baja. Slim chance. You think Nor-Tech, Cigarette, Fountain, Outerlimits etc. etc. I guess what I'm saying is, Baja has been unable to compete (performance wise) for so long, why would they jeopardize the reputation they have spent 20 years building on: a safe family boat. Fountain, Outerlimits, Nor-tech, push the envelope on a daily basis. Thats what brought them fame and fortune - Speed. Safety and a 24 degree hull made Baja (and perhaps a lot of Bang for the $$$). Furthermore, Baja sells a $hit load of boats using their current formula. Why screw with a good thing.

P.S. Don't get me wrong, I own a 02' 29ol and I absolutely love it. I just got really board and figured this would be a great debate. :D :drink:
P.S.S. I added pictures because pictures are cool. :evilb:

I am not sure who jimmy mcfly really is (maybe a Baja insider) but I know for a fact that this project is in the works. I am not sure if it is on the back burner now with all the other stuff they are trying to get done but I know this was in the works.

Take it for what it's worth. I don't really care either way. I am waiting on the 35ol, with 600's or maybe even more.....................God I love to dream.

I agree!

That you did not have a clue what you were talking about!:evilb:

What all have we seen since this first post?

Many new models introduced.
Many old models discountinued.
Notched Transoms
Pad Bottoms
Liner Construction
Carbon Fiber Hulls
Staggered engines
No bulk heads
Broken boats
OUT OF BUSINESS

Who would have thunk it?

JaayTeee 05-16-2008 12:33 PM

I was told Baja built one 30 with a notch.

It had 6.2's and worked good.

Hawkeye took a salvaged 30 w/HO's
and had it notched, but it didn't
work that well.

Well sorry I stand corrected.

Just had to go check all my pictures again. I thought all the 30's were notched.

Oh well

You are correct but I was convienced in my mind that the 30 was also.

How is your project coming along? Any more pictures of the air intake system you can share? I forgot which other thread that information was on.

Thanks

Project is still is cosmetic phase.

I took the air boxes off with the intent of putting
vinyl chrome ( mirror film) on the bases, and the remembered they were aluminum, so I started to sand on them to see if I can make them shiny.....but havent got around to finishing them.....they still may end up with
vinyl chrome on them.

Being that I can't have too many projects going at once,
, last weekend,I decided to lift the boat off the trailer
and do some work on the strakes ( sharpening the edges)

This, I have just about done ( more cosmetics to finish)
....the boat is useable, we're suppose to have the first Saturday this year that is going to be boatable, and the wife wants to go boating, so, no projects are getting completed this
weekend.

Should be done next week, I should have pic's then

We took an existing 30, pulled the engines and notched the transom before the 35 project was underway.

Ive seen the boat for sale on a repo site recently.

Here's some good memories from that boat (before the notch!)

We havent even closed the doors yet and you've already jumped the fence to another brand name? Is Dean bringing that NEW top secret Checkmate 42 that we are not supposed to talk about?:evilb:

Looks like we are going. Adam is putting the finishing touches on his boat this week. I feel bad for Jason. With the combination of us and the Hawkeye boys, he's bound to end up with a few new scars after that weekend!:D

You know me if I could be there I would. I have never been afraid to jump on a plane or hit the highway!

I have made plans long ago with Jeff "SteelOutlawed" to go boating in Charleston, SC that weekend or I would be there.

Somehow I have a hard time believing that that gang will not be together again after this event.:evilb:

I'll look forward to seeing you at Lake Erie this summer.
