MPH for 25 Outlaw

Hi. I'm new to this forum so I'll go ahead and appologize if this question has already been asked. I'm in the process of purchasing a 2002 25 Outlaw with the 375HP version of the 496. Can someone tell me what to expect as far at top speed? The dealer says 68 MPH. Is that about right? Anything else I should know?

Thanks
Sam

Boating Fool 02-12-2002 11:53 PM

We could only get 68-70 out of our 2001. That was with the 415HP 502 Mag. Low fuel no weight and perfect water. I think we might have got near 72. None of those speeds are GPS though.

Boating Fool 02-12-2002 11:55 PM

If you have not it bought it yet. Just to let you know we have ours for sale. Drop me an email and I can send you pics and info on it. Bought new last July, has only 40 hrs on the 502. Has outlaw graphics w/ SST Package.

CFD5 02-12-2002 11:59 PM

I've got the 496 MAGHO (425HP) and I get 68-70 on GPS. Speedo says 70-75 so don't trust it, use a GPS. I don't know what kind of speed with the 375HP but I love the boat.

Griff 02-13-2002 12:05 AM

The dealer is full of crap. Maybe with the 496 HO it will go 68 in salt water. It will GPS at 61-63mph most likely. I have a 24 Outlaw with about 420hp and it runs 64 on a good day.

CFD5 02-13-2002 12:09 AM

The hull of the 24 and new 25 are different so they cannot be compared in speed. I boat in fresh water and consistantly see 68mph on GPS. 70 with a light load and good chop.

sambryce 02-14-2002 02:21 PM

Thanks for the info. I've got a handheld GPS, so I'll let everybody know how it does once I get it in the water. I should be picking it up the weekend of the 23rd.

I've got a 95 24 Outlaw 550 Whipplecharged H.P. It runs 73 mph on GPS. Baja's take alot of horsepower to move them. I agree with Griff. Realistically looking at low 60's.

29 OUTLAW 02-14-2002 07:38 PM

Depending on your situation, I would hold out for one with at least a 496HO. I don't think you will be happy with the regular 496. It is not as robust as the 454mag that it replaced - not just in H.P. but also in terms of internal parts ( non-forged crank etc.). It's top RPM is only at 4600. This is just like the anemic 7.4L that they no longer make.

I have HO's in my boat and I love knowing I have that extra punch to run them up to 5100rpm if needed. That comes in handy when the guy running next to me thinks I've got nothing left. I know I still have that extra 500rpm on hand to punch him out and blow on by!!

Hey Outlaw who have you been punching out around Solomons?? Are you picking on those sail boats again? See you at the Tiki Bar this summer.

29 OUTLAW 02-14-2002 08:46 PM

Hey Beak

What the hell are you doing lurking around on the Baja board?

You of coarse, have a brand new 35 Beak with 500HP’s. (I must be in the wrong profession) I think a 35 Fountain with 500HP’s should be illegal in the hands of a guy like you!!

At any rate, I plan on spending more time this year over on your
side of the river. I’ve heard that over on your side is where all the Boy-Racers Run!! Over here where I live is where all the real-boaters live.

As far as me punching-out - it's the boy racers in the single engine Fountains that are easy targets. You have guys who buy a 27 then he gets out in this slop and realizes he only has a 24’ boat!! You have guys who buy a 29 then realizes he only has a 26’ boat!!

TOO MUCH BEAK – NOT ENOUGH BOAT

Anyway - I’m happy with the fact that I have a bone-stock Baja that can threaten the 80mph barrier.

Third weekend in April – Opening of the Tiki Bar. Me and many others will have slips down at Harbor Sounds (right next to the Tike Bar)

sambryce 02-16-2002 01:38 PM

With 3 people, 1/2 tank of gas, and 0.4 hours on the motor it ran 64 on GPS today at 4800 RPM. I didn't play with the trim a whole lot either. I would think that with 1-2 people and 1/4 tank of gas 66 would be possible once the motor breaks in.

kingpin 02-17-2002 07:09 AM

I have a 87 240 sport ( same hull as 24 outlaw) with a 510 440hp & we do 65 light fuel good day.

CFD12 02-17-2002 08:43 AM

Comparing a 24 to a 25 Outlaw is like comparing apples and oranges. CFD5's boat consistantly sees 68 on GPS. Allan4 who will probably jump on this thread has a 24 and it is a completely different boat, he will agree.

liquid asset 02-17-2002 12:25 PM

Baja told me 24 and 25 were basicly the same hull except the 25 is 1 foot longer and 250lbs. heavier

CFD5 02-17-2002 08:14 PM

I don't know the exact difference between the two but there is a difference. Like griff said he has a 24 w/ 420HP and it does "64 on a good day". I have a 25 w/425HP and easily see 68-70 so obviously there is something diffferent about the two. I have run side by side with allan4 and our boats handle the rough totaly different. Not to say the 24 is bad, allan4's boat is awesome and it flies with the best of them but they are two different hulls. Allan4, where are you when we need you!!

liquid asset 02-17-2002 09:21 PM

I have a 1997 24 outlaw sst with a 415 hp 502 mag mpi with trim tabs and capt.call with 125 hours turning a bravo 26 at 68mph@4550 rpm,my prop is being labbed by bronson hill,expecting 70-72 mph @4900

DJG 02-18-2002 04:56 AM

I would like to know the difference between the 24-25 besides the 1 foot. It might be the pad on the bottom I'm not sure. I do know that the 24 needs a ton of power to go fast. Originally I had around 420-450hp and was running about 64-65mph on gps with full fuel and 2 people. Last year had I'm guessing around 650hp and ran the best of 78 on gps with full fuel and 2 people. Also was on the rev. chip at 5600rpm. This year putting more motor in it maybe around 700+hp moving to a 30" prop stripping the bottom paint off and hopeing to see low 80's. I think the 24 is a real handfull when speeds get up into the 70's but I like the boat it's a fun ride.

zokman 02-20-2002 08:40 AM

If I can remember correctly, my 24 outlaw did not have a notch in the hull where as the 25 does. I don't think there is any other difference in the hulls? Talking to people it sounds like the 25 is a couple miles per hour faster given the same power.

29Fever 02-20-2002 09:59 AM

With equal power, the 25 is faster. There is something about the hull. The 24' seems to hit a brick wall in the high 60mph range. Fountain's 27' and 29' works almost the same way. The 27' is no faster than the 29' with equal power.

Wardey 02-20-2002 01:09 PM

My buddy's 24 Outlaw has a 365 Mag w/ Stainless Headers' Mod. Ign. Box. We have ran a 4 Blade Hydromtive 23 and ran 64. We ran a 23 3 Blade and ran 66-67. These were on GPS with 1/2 tank of fuel and 2 people in the boat. The boat "really" porpoises at anything over 55. I beleive the "X" is too deep and i'm trying to get him to install a 2" shorter drive in which I believe will help the boat dramaticly. I beleive the "real" number for the boat you are looking at will be in the 62 mph range. Dave Warden

WETTE VETTE 02-20-2002 06:48 PM

Is there anyone out there throwing big power at the 25'? I would be curious to see what on one of these would do with say another 200 HP. It seems to me stock power in these are not really testing their capabilities. Dean Nickerson told me he has had their 24' Outlaw to 96 mph with one of his R & D engines. (960 HP) He said as long as you pick and choose your water it's a pretty stable ride.

my BAJAmas 02-21-2002 01:16 AM

I have a 96 24 OUTLAW w/454magMPI and I run and honest 62-63 on GPS. I remember PB Mag tested the 25 outlaw with a 454MAGMPI and it ran 63.5MPH.
Regardless of the topend you'll love the boat!! It handles great and loves the 4 footers.
Have fun!!

khadley 02-21-2002 09:45 AM

i have rode in cfd5's 25 outlaw with my gps and his boat ran 68-70 depending on water his gps read the same the boat is impressive for a stock 496ho
it has a good ride even in rough water
i have known of a 24 out law with big power 600+ inch high compression motor (800+hp) and it didn't bust into the 80's the hull just isn't that fast (sorry allan4)

SeaWeasel 02-22-2002 09:48 AM

Less than necessary (long)

And now for my 3 cents . . .

I have a '93 24 with a 502 Mag carb with 390 hrs on it, Bravo 1 4-blade (pitch escapes me) that consistently runs low to 60's on GPS. I agree that these boats chine walk big time at anything over 50-55 and really struggle to get those last few mph. I also have a couple of 3 blade props, one that is lab finished, and they suck in terms of stability on this hull.

I would think a 24 with big power, K-planes and external steering would rock and roll, especially for the money. I have driven a '93 27 Fountain with 525sc, K-planes, Latham, etc. and while it was very fast, I don't think the ride was measurably different.

The 24 and 25 differ by 1000lbs (4K vs. 5K) and I think the "x" is substantially different. I have heard that the ride is not much different between the 24 & 25, but have never been on a 25. I really like the new cuddy design and have considered this boat for that alone. Not to mention the molded cockpit liner!!

And finally- always get the big motor!!!! I think the 496mag and ho are night and day from what I have heard and well worh the extra $$$. I think you will get some of your money back when you get bigger as well.

And really finally, my boat is also for sale (regretably) if anyone is interested, e-mail me!!!!

DJG 02-23-2002 07:35 AM

Gottahaveit- that's a really nice boat you got.

cobra marty 02-23-2002 07:44 AM

Chris, Nice boat. Looks like your drive is way down and you might well benifit from a shorter lower unit.

khadley 02-23-2002 10:13 AM

me and cfd5 tried a 2" shortened drive on his 25 outlaw it slowed down

liquid asset 03-01-2002 12:09 PM

Sea Weasle, 24= 4,500 lbs 25= 4750 lbs Gotta haveit I 've tried both of those props on my 24 stock 502 and the bravo 26 spun the fastest ,rpm, mph , and handled better

CigDaze 03-01-2002 12:55 PM

Tell me about it, Dude!
I hate when that happens! Yesterday it dipped below freezing here with a high of 52 and tomorrow it's going to be 82?
Go figure!

29Fever 03-01-2002 03:24 PM

Gotta have it,

I really doubt you're going to see 72 with a 26". It may struggle to get on plane. If it does, I would guess you would max out around 4700-4800 rpm. It sounds like you've got good speeds already for a stock setup. Make sure to post your results.

liquid asset 03-01-2002 06:44 PM

My 24 has a 26'' and planes quicker than my mirage 23, and does not blow otut and does it with no tabs, props are funny, you never know until you try:)

Visual contact 03-01-2002 09:51 PM

Baja speed

I have 2001 25 outlaw 454 Mag. I can run 65 all day. I can inch 67 or 68 on perfect water. All I have done to mine is installed gill offshore exhaust. It raised my rpm,s about 225. I'm running a 23 prop on now and going to change to a 25 just to see!!:)

garshev 03-02-2002 12:03 PM

25 outlaw speed

There is considerable differences between the 24 and the 25.
1 foot longer,4 inches wider, 750 pounds heavier, notched transom, notched spray rails, just for starters. I owned a 98 25
with a 502 mag that ran 66 mph on gps all day long and mine was one of the fastest around here in the north country. With
a 496/375 I would expect to see 62 to 63 with a full tank and load. just my .02

liquid asset 03-02-2002 03:02 PM

GARSHEV, you are wrong in to ways ,the 25 is only 250 lbs heavier and 2'' wider

garshev 03-03-2002 12:14 PM

OOPS. I goofed again but why quibble about 2 inches of beam
(at least thats what my wife tells me).The 96 brochure lists the 24 as weighing 4000# while the newer brochures lists the 25 at 4750# seems like 750 # to me.

liquid asset 03-03-2002 12:43 PM

I own a 1997 24 outlaw that weighs 4500 dry I wouldn't argue if it was'nt a fact , trust me I would kill to weigh 4,000 it would be a whole lot easier to get 70 mph ;) ( check the archives for a 1998 24 se on www.bajamarine.com)
