1978 '24 Banana, Your Opinions Please
Hi All,
I started to pirate a thread the other day and thanks for your replies.
I upgraded my membership so I could post pics and do this right.
Thanks for your replies so far.
Yes, This is the SF boat, you said it is possibly #14
I'm interested to know, in your opinions, if this boat is worth the $8k asking price,
Where the likely trouble spots are,
Is the windshield easily removable and is a low plexi version readily available?
The owner agreed to an inspection prior to purchase so that will give me info on engine issues, he said he hasn't run it in 3 years but it was tuned up last summer.
Can anyone tell from the engine graphics or style what year or period they are from? THey are supposed to be 225s, any way to verify this siince the graphics are gone?
Can anyone tell from the jack plates what year, make etc they are from?
It looks like original paint and upolstry, Brown isn't my first choice
I'm thinking clear off the brown stripes (If they are tape), and lame name graphics, or repaint black, compound the whole hull, and see how it looks, put a low windshield on, redo the upolstry in yellow and white, (old Magnum style).
I hate carpet in general, should there be a fiberglass sole underneath?
Motor and mechanical issues will be handeld as they are uncovered, I'd run whats there until I find some good options like a pair of fresh matched bridgeports. If the situation w the motors is bad I'll probably walk away.
Can anyone Identify the trailer?
He said the brakes were rusted so he took them off. I would need to go to a trailer shop and have them done and repack the bearings before towing it back up North.
Anyone want to appraise this boat based on the pics and guess on a price to buy at?
Any issues I need to look for?
Locations to check for rot? cracks etc?
Thanks All, Here are the pics:

I really like that there is no hatch on the deck and no port holes or set in lights etc, I haven't seen many pics of 24s with this clean of a layout.

Well the engines are definately pre 1989.
Look to be 1985 or older. Is one counter-rotating? Do you know how many hours? What kind of steering set up does it have? Hard to tell from the photos?
Windshield has got to go. Compass is not centered.
Buy it, then sell the trailer and buy a new aluminum trailer.
A low profile windshield is very easy to make.
As for price? Not sure. There is a 1986 Banana on the east coast with twin 200 merc's that run with a good trailer for $9000 asking price.
A 1989 Banana boat with twin 1989 Mercury 200hps counter rotating with an aluminum trailer and both motors rebuilt. Boat is very good condition and it sold for $9800 on e-bay last week.
Maybe you could talk him down a bit on the $8000?
Make sure to check the seal on the tilt/trim pump on both those motors.
Good Luck

Air Dog makes some great points. I have corresponded with the present owner over the years and know that to be boat #14. It was layed up the "Cigarette way" (Cigarette lamination schedule) and actually used high impact resin too(which was used for race layups at the time). I think you could negotiate with him a bit.

The serial number are: 597 6038 and 6029
What did it weigh back in the day, (I'm guessing it shouldn't weigh too much more now=)
Thanks
Evan
