SOB Racing next year
I noticed there is a lot of talk regarding Single Outboard Racing next year in OPA of New Jersey.
Min length is 21 feet and max is 24 feet ....with a single outboard. Nice and simple. Sounds like it might be very interesting for the new 24 to get competitive again. Any interest? Maybe the factory could help in some way make the older boats more competitive too. |
Hi Charlie,
You have a PM. CC |

Oh well, I'm on the wrong coast and my SOB has twins |
Re: SOB Racing next year
I'd love to! But it would be a hard "sell" to Becky. Since it's "our" boat and she is not a real risk taker. Also she really doesn't get why people would go out there and beat the snot out of there pleasure boats and maybe wreck them just to say "yeah, I've raced it!".
Now with that said, what could be done to make them more competitive? Mine is waiting for a complete rebuild so "more competitive" could fit right in there with the rebuild! I read a post on the SOB class yesterday and it sounds like the few that have made it out are all in the 75mph+ range of boats. Not that they are getting there but they are seeing high 60's for coarse avg. And thats alot more "BANG" than our boats are seeing now with singles. Do you guys have an idea for some sort of a competitive/race package that would get us near there? I'm interested but I would need alot of info in order to try and sway Becky into going for it. Get back to me here or at [email protected] with some info and we'll see what happens. Adam |
Re: SOB Racing next year

Re: SOB Racing next year
Yeah, I know.

Or just buy two Banana Boats like me... :drink:
|
Re: SOB Racing next year
My inside info says that another bad Banana :evilb: may be hitting the for sale scene soon. But it needs alot of work. Although it wouldn't qualify for SOB class!

Re: SOB Racing next year
Count me in for 1 or 2 races in a 24 Pantera, single 200(modified :D )
|
Re: SOB Racing next year
Which one Adam?
|
Re: SOB Racing next year
Adam,
Are you trying to tell us that your selling your rig? :( |
Re: SOB Racing next year
No not mine. Just another very rare Banana. :evilb:
|
You must be talking about "Hells Banana"? or "Beep Beep"?
I know of another banana on lake winni that was Jeb Browns first race boat. I think it has twin 300 mercs on it now? Jeb said he raced it only one year and it was all stock. Then he traded it in for "Spoiled Banana". Port Edgewood then put twin Merc 200's on it and sold it to the guy from Yarmouth, Ma that currently has hull "53". He put twin MOD VP's on it, painted "WHIP LASH" on the side and after a few years sold it to the guy on Lake Winni that owns it now. Lots of useless info huh? |
Re: SOB Racing next year
Yes you guessed it "Hells Banana". Nothing official yet just rumors that it may be getting close to time for him to let it go. And if he does, yes my boat will be for sale most likely becaus I will be buying it if at all possible.

"Spoiled Banana" - Green Race boat currently has no power.
"Monkey Bizness" - White sport boat currently has a 350hp V8 Johnson outboard that I am taking off this weekend and shipping it back to the guy I got it from. I am then putting my stock 200hp Mercury back on. |
Re: SOB Racing next year
TB, any info on what might make us more competitive? I know we would most likely do great in the rougher water. Since I doubt that any of the current SOB's running will go out in rougher water. But what about on the calmer water sites? I'm getting more and more interested since it looks like they are going to pass HB162 in NH, which will limit our speed on all lakes to 45 day and 25 night.

Re: SOB Racing next year
#1 SOB will they have a break out speed like with the other classes? if not I think you guys will do good in any water the smaller boats might pull in front at first but the boat wakes will get to them in time  if you want to run twins you could run with us in P 5 with the twins you would have that neck snapping pick up coming out of the turns :D .lets face it most of the in board boats are making 600 plus hp  even though we are prop restocked to 24prop 25p we scream coming out of a turn.#2 I'll have ask my aunt about the ghosts they were probably at her old house which was next to the STUDIO BAR ,AND THE BIG BUILDING ON THE CORNER ON STILTS IS A SUMMER RENTAL WITH THE ART SHOPS. SHE STILL OWNS. she sold the house to her friend when my uncle past away. so I hope to spend a couple of weekends nexted summer there, I can use her old dock ,if the water fuzz doesn't mined dry pipes :D other wise he drive up.
|
Re: SOB Racing next year
that was to say prop restricted to 24p or 25p sorry :p
|
Re: SOB Racing next year

I can't remember the neighhborhood that well it's been 20 years. I don't think it was on the water. The woman's name was Davia and the ghost was her namesake, "Aunt Davia". My buddy was renting a room that semester. I was going to a UMass marine lab program in Glouster (Glas ta) at the time. We were research assistants on the Regina Maris, the 145' Barkentine (big wood sailboat for all our whacker friends) tied to the wharf in Glouster, next to the coast guard station, if anyone saw or remebers that . I was staying at the Anchorage Inn. It roomed students in the off season. we'd go to the pakky and get wickid hammad. we drank Hoffenreffer's Green Death with the little puzzles in the cap, and go try to pick up little rich girls in Beverly Faaams at Kensington College? Not sure about the name of the school since, maybe I remember it wrong |
Re: SOB Racing next year
Dregsz, I think the name of the college now is Endicott and its since gone coed. But up here we still get "HAMMAD" and chase the rich girls from Beverly Faams and Manchestaa by the sea. Back in the day did you go to the Crows nest? The place is dump but cheap drinks, good company, and you here some good story's.
|
Re: SOB Racing next year
Endicott sounds right.
we didn't just get hammad, we'd get Wikid Heyamad I can't remember the name of the dive bar we'd go to, it was in glouster and served really bad pizza too, by the slice I think I can remember the taste of it, almost like cardboard. Or maybe I'm thinking of 2 places, Glouster was a smelly town. We didn't drink in bars too much back then, buy a really cheap 12 pack of malt liquor, (before there was a 40s culture) and sit around. were talkin really cheap, on sale, bottom drawer beer |
Re: SOB Racing next year
Well I dropped the I want to go racing bomb on Becky last night. And she was suprizingly all for it! So as long as I can afford to get my boat up and sea worthy agian by next season, you can count me in for at least the fairly local races. :drink:

Re: SOB Racing next year

Re: SOB Racing next year
Hey SOB's My name is Brandon and i raced a 21' Superboat at the race in Camden. I'll be racing at most of the OPA events next year rough water or calm as long as SOB's show up. as far as setup's goes for you guys i would imagine it would be pretty similar to Superboats. Mine was terrible for camden but it was a last minute thing. Next year i will be running a 300 on the transom NO Setback, trim tabs and some ballast up in the bow and a couple of other minor changes. I think thats the ticket and i figured i would share it with you guys. Big setbacks i think is major NO NO for rough water(especially on my 21, the 24's might be able to get away with some). Also form what i understand if we get enough boats it wont be "Bracket speed restricted" racing, which doesnt really matter because i doubt anybody will be running much over 70mph in rough water with an SOB. I look foward to racing and meeting you guys next year.

Re: SOB Racing next year
Jack plate, minimal set back?
|
Re: SOB Racing next year
Brandon,
Congrats on the racing. I watched the video. Nice work. Were you running trim tabs? Dregs, My race Banana has 17" of set back with the single set up. |
Re: SOB Racing next year
How does it do in rough water?
The SB is chine walking in everything above 60 mph. has 23P mirage prop, that will be the first thing to change. need a prop that can lift the bow,(and stern too) Chris, what props were you runnning w your fridge? any good ones to suggest? Evan (Now known as , "Big Johnson") |
Superboat has 7' beam.
Banana has 8' beam. I was running a 24p raker. Fastest prop with the single V8 was a 27p raker and that is what Jeb won the worlds with. I was going to start by dialing in the 24, then try the 27. |
Re: SOB Racing next year
I didnt have Trim Tabs for the race this past season. The boat had a stock 200 12" of setback and didnt have any weight in the bow. AS far as props I like Trophy's a lot on the 21. Next year i will have tabs and a 300 on the Transom or close to it.

Re: SOB Racing next year
Also AirDog, where did you get the video? how can i purchase one? Thanks
